Butterflyhulk · 14/12/2018 12:38

So.... Just set up a new payment plan for my electricity account and think it's very high! However the bloke I spoke to said it's based on what they think I'm going to use over the next year,
We are a family of 4, 2 adults 2 primary school aged children in a 3 bedroom terraced house.
Everything in the house is ran on electric i.e. cooker/hob ect bit still believe it is high.
Thanks

What have they estimated you'll use?

I have a similar household but have gas CH/hot water. We use around £40 a month in electric - bit more in winter but not much. Having electric heating and hot water will push up your usage enormously though, as it is so much more expensive than gas (mine is about 3.5x more per unit). Friends who have electric storage heaters and immersion tanks seem to use a hell of a lot of electric.

The80sweregreat · 14/12/2018 12:45

91 a month for both electric n gas with eon. Small 3 bed house , four adults.
Bound to go up I bet!

Butterflyhulk · 14/12/2018 12:51

We have gas CH/hot water.
They've estimated we need to pay 80 a month for the electric!

We average around £100 per month for combined gas and electric. In summer it’s a lot lower and higher in winter but I keep the account in credit and it averages out. We live in a freezing flat so I except all that cost is heating. Can’t wait to move into a new build next year

Hedgehog80 · 14/12/2018 12:53

£170 a month. 2 adults 5 children in a 4 bed

Hedgehog80 · 14/12/2018 12:54

Gas is £55 a month

Butterflyhulk · 14/12/2018 12:54

That's with eon, we currently pay 90 a month for gas too so that's 170 a month for both! But he said going on our previous years usage that's right but i just don't see how.

Hedgehog80 that seems really high do you not think?

£180pm inn a 5 bed detached

Redken24 · 14/12/2018 12:57

£28 a week on thtc - storage heating

Kerning · 14/12/2018 12:57

Check your bills to see how much electricity you've used over the past 12 months and then work out what the cost would be on your current tariff if you're not happy with their estimate. I pay £70 per month gas and electric combined, 3 bed semi, 2 people.

seventhgonickname · 14/12/2018 12:58

I pay £50 a month gas and electric 3 bed house. It was estimated £75 when I first moved in.
Make sure you meter read every month and bear in mind that it will be less in summer which offsets anything over 50(usually Dec,Jan,Feb).
Seems a lot for just electric but you won't know until the first few months are over how much you use.

veggiepigsinpastryblankets · 14/12/2018 12:58

We pay £85 for a 3 bed flat - however we don't have gas so that pays for our hot water and fucking storage heaters as well.

It'll be be based on worst case scenario as they'd rather have too much of your money than not enough. Keep an eye on your actual meter readings and if it turns out you're overpaying you can ask for some of the credit back.

MrsStrowman · 14/12/2018 12:58

£120 a month gas and electric, two adults and a baby. Three bed Edwardian semi, DH has been promising to re-lag the loft since 2016....

Lazypuppy · 14/12/2018 13:02

You don't have you pay what they suggest. Just tell them what you want your direct debit to be

Pemba · 14/12/2018 13:03

That's really high. We pay £85 a month for both. According to Martin Lewis the average household energy bill is £1000 so about £83 a month.
Could it be you have an electric fire, I think they really eat up electricity? Same with a tumble dryer.
Even allowing for the fact that the energy companies sometimes overestimate what you'll use a bit as they prefer customers to be in credit, that's still an awful lot. Ask them for help and tips to cut down usage. Maybe your meter is faulty?

Lazypuppy · 14/12/2018 13:03

And if you do end up overpaying you just ask for your credit back every 6 months or so

Butterflyhulk · 14/12/2018 13:03

We've lived here nearly 4 years and used to just pay the bill every 3 months when it came until last year we went through a hard patch financially and got into debt, we set up a payment plan to pay the debt off and was paying 26 a week for our usage and debt, we were finally in credit a few weeks ago after paying all the debt off so just rang them to reset it as no more debt to pay thinking the payment plan would go down to around 10-15 a week/40-60 a month which is roughly what we were paying before we got into the debt so was a bit shocked that they only knocked 6 pound a week off. I will have to request a bill from them as I don't receive them anymore so I can check.

£80 just for electricity when you have gas CH does sound really high.

How much electricity have you used in the last year? As in what have your bills been or actual usage if your bills have been estimated? Also, are you on the best tariff? Prices have gone up, but it still sounds like you are paying a lot.

We pay about £95 pm for gas and electric and have an electric shower, dishwasher, all electric cooking so it's only the heating that uses gas, and I think the split is slightly more for the gas and about 40-45 pm for the electric.

Do you use a tumble dryer a lot, or have lots of lighting? I think it's halogen lights that use quite a lot of electricity.

Butterflyhulk · 14/12/2018 13:07

We do have an electric fire that we try not to use much, think the metre is ok as had new smart metre fitted a year ago or so.
We have a tumble dryer but only use it for bigger things like towels and bedding as everything else goes on the clothes horse. He did ask what I wanted to pay and I asked what he recommended as don't want to pay too little and end up back in debt.
Thankyou for all your replies, think I'm going to ring them and request last year's annual bill so I can see what I actually used.

£60 for electricity for a 3 bedroom house with 2 adults and 3 yr old ds. We're in NI.

ShesABelter · 14/12/2018 13:09

56 a month. Three storey house, four bedrooms. Five people living here.

3littlemonkeys82 · 14/12/2018 13:10

We are a family of 5, 2 adults, 1 teen, 2 reception aged. Pay £47 a month electric £53 gas. The accounts always in credit.

Can you request a smart meter so that you can check your daily useage? Then after a month you can easily show you use x amount per day on average so that they can adjust your d/d?

Butterflyhulk · 14/12/2018 13:10

I've never changed the tariff we are on so not sure if we are on the best so will have to check that.

3littlemonkeys82 · 14/12/2018 13:11

Cross post re smart meter... do you have one of the handsets so you can check your average use?
