At work the other day, was told that an exclamation mark was now called a 'pling'. Now every time I see or use it I am reminded of the silly renaming and for an unknown reason it is bugging the hell out of me! Grrrrr!

Hoover/hoovering.

I think I've said this before elsewhere on here that it is called vacuuming. Not 'hoover'ing. Hoover is (apparently, I have never in my life come across an actual vacuum cleaner that is a Hoover make, only Electrolux, Volta, Dyson, Kirby, Shark etc) a MAKE of vacuum. For example, I drive a Toyota. I don't say;
"I'm going for a Toyota!" Or "I'm Toyota-ing this time!" (substitute drive and driving for those two examples). I am going for a drive. I am driving to work, I am not Toyotaing to work.

It would be also like saying "turn on the Samsung" or "I was watching my favourite show on Panasonic last night", or "turn the Panasonic down". Instead of TV.

Hoovering is a brand of vacuum cleaner. It is not a verb, it is not an action. You are doing the VACUUMING. Or vacuum cleaning. Not 'hoovering'.

'Babysit' when used in relation to the male parent and his own children

ConfusedWife1234 · 16/12/2018 06:38

I agree on babysit. How about “doing his job as a parent“ lol

I do not like the word phyrric because I have a hard time both spelling and pronouncing it. Also I think it sounds like a sort of illness: Sorry but you have got phyrric. You have only four month left to live.

@everybody else: Some if you did not mention why the hate the words they hate. Why do you?

MsLToe · 16/12/2018 06:39

I quite like ‘moist’ and also ‘meal’ but not in the same sentence.

MsLToe · 16/12/2018 06:43

Gifted. No, you gave someone something. It wasn’t ‘gifted’.

Similarly ‘costed’ - I blame The Apprentice for that one.

‘Banter’ or even worse ‘bants’. Shorthand for ‘I’m a cunt.’

It’s a brand name that has become generic. Like googling.
