What words really annoy you?

At work the other day, was told that an exclamation mark was now called a 'pling'. Now every time I see or use it I am reminded of the silly renaming and for an unknown reason it is bugging the hell out of me! Grrrrr!

4 words put together 'living my best life' oh fuck off

DeepanKrispanEven · 14/12/2018 08:21

Text when people mean texted.

Hun. Calling strangers hun should be a criminal offence.

Squatternutbosh123 · 14/12/2018 08:22

pinkdelight a guy a saw a few times called a clitoris a giggling pin. I never saw him again after that

pinkdelight · 14/12/2018 09:27

Cripes, squatter, that's revolting! You made the right choice there.

igivein · 14/12/2018 09:51

adulting

GraceMarks · 14/12/2018 09:59

Meal. I don't know why, I just find it hideous. Probably self-loathing class consciousness or something.

Yy to "hun". I always want to say "as in Attila the..?"

A pop of colour.

Babdoc · 14/12/2018 10:10

Redundant words, such as “return back” instead of return, “PIN number” instead of PIN, “off of” instead of off.
Panties - it manages to be prurient and yet toe curlingly twee and babyish when applied to adult clothing. My kids always referred to
it laughingly as “the P word”, because they knew I couldn’t bear to hear it spoken! I didn’t mind pants, knickers, underwear or briefs, but the P word made me cringe.

QuestionableMouse · 14/12/2018 10:19

Joggy bots. Ugh

CoughLaughFart · 14/12/2018 10:25

Horrid instead of horrible. Was shocked that horrid was still in use when I came on here. Same as fancy, they both sound like they come from an Enid Blyton book.

I was also shocked by how often ‘horrid’ is used here. The same with ‘gosh’ and ‘oh my’.

Gran22 · 14/12/2018 10:26

It's 'hon' short for honey, not hun.

My current in favourite is 'myself'. Especially when it's used to start a sentence. 'Myself and my friend went out'. No its 'My friend and I went out'. Myself sounds really pretentious.

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 14/12/2018 10:29

Super..."I was super excited/angry". Makes me want to smack the person saying it.

Theoryofmould · 14/12/2018 10:34

When someone says going for a poo, we don't need an announcement thank you. My husband knowing how much this annoys me says I'm going to defecate, he thinks he's hilarious, he's not Hmm

LucieMorningstar · 14/12/2018 10:34

“Pop” and “cuppa”.

As in “to pop somewhere, or pop something in to something”.

Cuppa is horrible. Fuck off with your cuppas. Xmas Grin

Laiste · 14/12/2018 10:44

Pissed instead of pissed off. Over here pissed means drunk.

I'm soooo peeeeased ....

WHY would anyone want to copy this?!

Hmm ugh

ChorleyFMcominginyourears · 14/12/2018 21:33

@theoryofmould I laughed out loud at that 😂 I LOVE the word defecate and that he says it to rile you 😂

sandalsinthebin · 14/12/2018 22:09

Harvest - as in harvest eggs 🤢
Root -as in root of a wart also 🤢

ElainaElephant · 14/12/2018 22:13

Gotten is a perfectly good, British English word.

Just because some places stopped using it doesn't mean everywhere did.

I'm curious. Question for those that don't like the word. How do you feel about the word forgotten?

missmouse101 · 14/12/2018 22:15

Gotten, gobsmacked, mutt.

jarhead123 · 14/12/2018 22:15

Pee

Hubby

Holibobs

The 'shire (cool way of saying back in their home county - round here anyway) very annoying!

Pomsinspace · 14/12/2018 22:23

Brought instead of bought
Juice instead of Petrol

constantlyseekinghappiness · 14/12/2018 22:24

I agree with ‘super’

You can be bored, excited, hungry, etc. You don’t need to be ‘super’ those things.

And also ‘do’ - as in hen do, work do, christmas do.

GetOffTheTableMabel · 14/12/2018 22:39

Yes ‘do’ is awful. I don’t want to go to a do.
I really loathe ‘Other Half’. I don’t know what I’d do without my wonderful dh but he is not my other half. I am a whole fucking person.

CrimpBrunette · 14/12/2018 22:43

Super (instead of 'very') and moreish... I don't know why, they just really grate on me 😂

CrimpBrunette · 14/12/2018 22:46

Sorry gran, but it's, "my friend and me" Grin

Shockers · 14/12/2018 22:49

The question was, “What words really annoy you?”

Gotten annoys me because it wasn’t really used for decades, but has re-emerged as part of the tide of Americanisms.

Yes, it is an old English word, but when it’s used alongside candy, movies, trash and cookies, it grates on me.
