I am ringing about the accident that wasn't your fault!!

I am getting a lot of nuisance calls. They start with "I am ringing about the accident that wasn't your fault?"

I have told them time and again. There was no accident.

Then they say were you ever in an accident...No I wasn't

Then a few days later the same thing again!!

Please tell me how to get rid of them. AIBU to think they have no interest in the truth?

I say, “no it wasn’t an accident, I meant to run that old lady over.”

adviceonthepox · 14/12/2018 00:01

It does worry me how they get the numbers though. I had a brand new phone, I had only given it to the school, drs and the hospital and family/friends I was just about to start updating details with companies I use and my online accounts when one rang me! How? I had only had the number for about 2 or 3 days Hmm

DRE56322 · 14/12/2018 00:10

"Sorry. I can't talk. I'm on the toilet" was a stock response from someone I know. They soon hang up. Then block the number.

HearMeSnore · 14/12/2018 00:11

I honestly think they just have some kind of random number generator that calls made up numbers ad nauseum until some sucker bites. That's why they never know your name or anything about you unless you tell them.

If these calls come to your mobile, don't speak. Hang up immediately and block the number.

If it's your landline, get a Truecall. The best £100 I've ever spent. No nuisance calls in 8 years.

DustyMaiden · 14/12/2018 00:14

I said “”do you mean when I pissed my self in Sainsbury’s?”

Frankswife87 · 14/12/2018 00:16

I've blocked loads of numbers on my mobile, they are sly they just call on a different number Angry

SusanneLinder · 14/12/2018 00:18

A bit non pc in places, but this is hilarious

twoshedsjackson · 14/12/2018 00:27

A friend was told that "someone in her household had been involved in an accident" and asked whether it was xx or yy (human names). The cold caller hazarded a hopeful guess, thinking they'd found somebody gullible, only to be told that she knew her cats were clever creatures, but not that they could drive.
Rather more sadly, another friend told a cold caller, rather sternly, that she should be ashamed of herself, she was presumably a graduate and should get herself a proper job (overseas call centre) and the cold caller started crying and hung up......

ilikebigbows · 14/12/2018 00:29

www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/tps_text.html Register with the Tps. If they call you after that, tell them you're registered. They won't ring again as they get fined for it.

Justaboy · 14/12/2018 00:29

Heres one of the best to deal with telemarketers enjoy;!

AnotherPidgey · 14/12/2018 00:38

I exclaimed to the most recent one "Oh did I? I've got terrible amnesia, I wonder if I've had an accident and promptly hung up.

DM likes stringing along cold callers. She had one for life insurance playing along with the little old wifey role for several minutes until they asked to speak to her DH. DM said that that was a bit awkward because he'd been 6 foot underground for the past 20+ years Grin

Pawprintjoy · 14/12/2018 00:42

Dd’s Friend got a call from one, they don’t seem to allow you to claim for the accident of your birth Smile

seventhgonickname · 14/12/2018 00:46

I've had the IPs one a lot recently but it is automated. It was after a call out to Green flag and to my mobile so Ithink it is linked.Very annoying though as it is hard to get the automated one anything but confused and a hang up.I love the ones from live people though.Iay have traumatised a few with my acting out as a distraught recent widow though they don't often other me again!

Seeingadistance · 14/12/2018 00:51

If I have the time I play with them for a while.

I usually express amazement about this accident, and ask them to tell me more about it. When did it happen? What happened? That's terrible! Why did no one tell me? Oh, wait a minute, are you talking about that time I was decapitated?

They hang up on me after a bit, which is a shame really, as I'm usually having fun by that point.

TheKrakening3 · 14/12/2018 00:51

Hang up immediately. These scammers ring thousands of people. They know that people who stay on the phone and engage are more likely to be successfully scammed.

So while you know you won’t fall for the scam, wasting time engaging with them, even just to annoy them, will mark your number as a better bet in their database and they will keep calling.

IamPickleRick · 14/12/2018 00:54

Get listed on TPS. It’s the telephone protection service and it drastically reduces your nuisance calls as they can be fined for calling a number on it.

Kindofnewtothis · 14/12/2018 01:25

I used to work cold calling for PPI, were not bad people I promise 😂 honestly the best thing to do is say to everyone who rings if they can please erase all of your data from their system and never contact you again :) it saves you and the person on the other end wasting one another's time haha

Kindofnewtothis · 14/12/2018 01:27

I was a cold caller for a PPI company on my gap year between second and third year of university and was constantly hailed abuse for not having a proper job, being thick as shit, go kill yourself etc. Didn't bother me at all I used to just let them go on and get more angry, more fool them for hailing abuse at poor sods just trying to make a living

Flowerpot2005 · 14/12/2018 02:27

I ask how they could possibly know as I left the scene as I was a bit tiddly after a good shoplifting session & couldn't risk being caught.

Other times I've said are you absolutely sure because that night we were out dogging & everyone was so polite about taking their turn. I didn't recall anyone damaging our car in frustration.

Defo trying the it was fatal one next time lol.

DayManChampionOfTheSun · 14/12/2018 06:39

I put them on loud speaker and pop them next to the telly. They have had some great conversations with corrination street

JoyofSticks · 14/12/2018 06:43

Tell them your number is TPS and ask for a manager to find out how they got it, they hang up immediately.

meditrina · 14/12/2018 07:00

I just ask them who they want to speak to, so I can put them through to the right extension, or pass to correct switchboard operator. They have been incapable of giving a name to date (I suspect they are block dialling numbers).

I try to tie them up for as long as possible, because the more time they're bothering me, the less they're moving on to the next one.

When it's a 'microsoft' engineer rather than a nasty cold-calling company I am significantly less polite

TroysMammy · 14/12/2018 07:12

When I had an accident in my car I told my insurance company that I didn't give permission for my telephone number to be given to anyone else and only the insurance company to contact me. I never had a call from any third party.

CigarsofthePharoahs · 14/12/2018 07:13

I just get the automated ones now. Either day nothing or random words to confuse them. I tried to tell it my accident had been on the moon, but it hung up on me.
Trouble is, as our land line receives 99% cold calling crap I have been occasionally rude to a genuine caller.
A case in point -
"Hello, is that Mr Cigars?"
"No, because I'm clearly not a man."
"I am most terribly sorry. I'm X from your energy supplier calling about an issue you contacted us about…"

bastedyoungturkey · 14/12/2018 07:14

I reversed into a bollard. They kept ringing me to tell me they could recover compensation from the third party. Oh yeah? Crack on with that one then.
