So I know nothing about whisky but I bloody love a JD Diet Coke.

My partner bloodys loves the stuff and I want to get home something special/nice for Christmas. I know he like a single malt and I think it's from the highlands?!

Any ideas? He has those cube/stones things. He has small tumblers but they look shit, what should I look for?

What's an unusual whisky that he may appreciate?

Tours/distilleries etc he will never go to so not really an option.

Thanks!

A whisky tasting seleaction would be a great idea! Try master of malt online?

wijjy · 13/12/2018 22:28

Bruichladdich is a gorgeous whisky - and the packaging is a lovely colour, you are not going to mistake it for anything else

I once imbibed too many free samples at a whisky event and spent a fortune of the Japanese whiskey Hibiki... Pretty bottle though... But that's what l get for drinking 25 year old single malts at 11am! (A rather nice glenfarclas!)

wijjy · 13/12/2018 22:29

Or highland park is a good bet for something a little different (and not so peaty).

jackstini · 13/12/2018 22:29

DH says definitely Glencairn glasses - makes the whiskey taste completely different

Ardbeg is good if he likes Laphroaig or Glenfarclas 15 or 25

For a different Japanese aromatic one, Chita Suntory is delicate

Gotthetshirt23 · 13/12/2018 22:32

Go West - Welsh whisky - Penderyn. Stunning !

Whisky2014 · 13/12/2018 22:34

Balvenie doublewood Caribbean cask. Done.

LakieLady · 13/12/2018 22:35

Another Macallan fan here. I had a tot of the 18 year old once, pure heaven.

Blair Athol is great, too.

ikltownofboothlehem · 13/12/2018 22:35

Agree Masters of Malt - you can put together a taster set of 5 or 10 miniatures. The tasting club is good too but £30 a month.

DH has just tried the Highland Park Dragon Legend which he loved.

Verbena87 · 13/12/2018 22:36

Penderyn is good. Coel Ila is the loveliest.

Verbena87 · 13/12/2018 22:36

*caol ila

@Whisky2014 I feel like you know what you're talking about with that name ;)

It’s a bugger to spell and even harder to pronounce Grin

I was not at all impressed by penderyn but maybe I tried the one dud one. I’m desperate to try some Japanese whiskies but They’re not cheap and I have my islays to get through first. I love an Islay whiskey- bunnhabain is not nearly smokey enough for me Grin

Rhumba · 13/12/2018 22:41

Laphroig is a bit marmite in my experience some love it some hate it. Would recommend Macallen or Jura is lovely. Talisker is also v drinkable.

3out · 13/12/2018 22:41

I find Highland Park really peaty, but the bottle we have is quite old, maybe that’s why.

I prefer Scapa whisky,

JaceLancs · 13/12/2018 22:44

My out and out favourite is Glengoyne

MsMightyTitanAndHerTroubadours · 13/12/2018 22:48

have a look in the supermarkets, if he like laphroaigh (or whatever) then there are often fancier variations available/limited editions so you won't go far wrong.
Usually lots of Taliskers and Highland Park and Jura varieties
It's such a wide ranging subject that it really is difficult to make recommendations.

I really like the smokey peatey ones, esp Smokehead. Dh's fave is a Glenfiddich variation...can't recall which one atm, maybe Solera??, but neither of us are a fan of the standard Glenfiddich.
We had a bottle of the fancypants Ardbeg a few years back...man it was smokey but gorgeous and rich

I knew dh loved me when we were on a holiday in a teeny tiny scottish holiday cottage and he had spent his money on a bottle of Glenlivet, I had a terrible terrible cold and he made me a hot toddy with it! He does still bring it up though!!

BunsOfAnarchy · 13/12/2018 22:48

Laphroaig Quarter Cask is sex. Much better than the 10 year.
Ardbeg is beautiful too
Lagavulin also.

Theuly are VERY peaty though. And very smokey. Much like Lapsong Suchong tea. Im an Islay whisky fan though.

moredoll · 13/12/2018 22:51

A whisky tasting selection is a great idea!
Something like. this

You'll have to buy home some coke too so he can use his ice thingys with that cos he shouldn't be using them with malt.

SerenDippitty · 13/12/2018 22:54

Glenfarclas is a nice light one. I think M & S have it.

SenecaFalls · 13/12/2018 23:03

Glenmorangie Lasanta is my favorite. Aged in sherry casks.

Also another vote for Jura 12 year old.

And if you want to spend a lot of money,
Bruichladdich Black Art.

DramaAlpaca · 13/12/2018 23:07

I'm not much of a whisky drinker, but I do really like Talisker.

randomchap · 13/12/2018 23:07

Ancnoc 12 or 18 year are good. They also do a peaty one which is lovely too.

Lovingbenidorm · 13/12/2018 23:09

DH is is whiskey lover and reckons the best he’s ever had is a House of Bruar

SergeantPfeffer · 13/12/2018 23:10

I like the Islay Barley made by bruichladdich. It’s young (8 years, I think) but it’s good. Quite peaty, but not crazy peaty.
