So I know nothing about whisky but I bloody love a JD Diet Coke.

My partner bloodys loves the stuff and I want to get home something special/nice for Christmas. I know he like a single malt and I think it's from the highlands?!

Any ideas? He has those cube/stones things. He has small tumblers but they look shit, what should I look for?

What's an unusual whisky that he may appreciate?

Tours/distilleries etc he will never go to so not really an option.

Thanks!

Have just showed this to my DH and he says with him liking the Laphroig and Dalwhinnie that you showed in the photo, you should get him. Port Charlotte. The two he has already are prayed and as is the port Charlotte.

TheSpottedZebra · 13/12/2018 22:13

He has a bit of a mix there!

The Dalwhinnie is very sweet and honeyed and rather gentle. The winters gold is an especially toffee ish expression.

And Laphroaig is quite the opposite! It's very smokey and medicinal. Some say tcp ish.

You could get another variety from the same distillery? Eg the Dalwhinnie 15yo ?

lisasimpsonssaxophone · 13/12/2018 22:14

Ooh he does have Laphroaig in his collection! Sounds like he’d be up for trying something new then. OK so my recommendations would be Jura (Prophecy if your budget stretches to it) Talisker or Ardbeg. Or you could go for something unusual and get him a Japanese whisky if he might be up for trying something different!

TheSpottedZebra · 13/12/2018 22:15

Nb I am not a DH. All my knowledge is mere lady knowledge Sad

But I've drunk and enjoyed whisky for years, and worked in the industry.

MilkyCuppa · 13/12/2018 22:16

He has those cube/stones things
In that case he isn’t a serious whisky drinker anyway. It’s sacrilegious to chill a single malt! Perhaps Bells would be suitable if he wants to drink it cold?

S0upertrooper · 13/12/2018 22:16

Just seen your photo. Looks like he likes a broad taste so you could get anything but make sure it's a single malt rather than a blended malt (2 or 3 mixed together) The 'Beckham' malt is surprisingly quite nice and is usually on special at Christmas, although I can't remember if it's blended. Monkey Shoulder is also nice.

aPoundInTheHand · 13/12/2018 22:16

Highland park is lovely, also Macallan.

Can get a nice port cask whisky from a small distillery called Edradour & that's yummy & a bit different.

You'll not go wrong with any of the suggestions above.

If he likes peaty (like laphroaig) then Islay whiskeys all the way! I’m on a bottle of Caol Illa at the moment (Moch, which is a blend of ages) and it is very nice. Smooth, lightly peated. Bowmore 15 year is lovely too, quite smooth again.
If he likes laphroaig then he might appreciate lagavulin which is super peaty. Not for everyone but it is a bit special.
So nice to have a whiskey thread! Crystal tumblers for me too 🥃

Fashionista101 · 13/12/2018 22:16

Ooooh this is getting quite exciting. Deffs gonna get a Norlan glass, because I like the look of them 😂

He likes the sphere ice cubes but it's a ball ache to fill and never really works so I may look for a better version of.

He's had talisker as I remember that name! May look into Japanese whisky......

Dalmore 12 year.
As pp says Laphroaig and Ardbeg are Island malts, not from the Highlands. Lovely but smokey and peaty. Highland malts are much smoother.

aPoundInTheHand · 13/12/2018 22:17

Hibiki if you're looking at Japanese whiskeys too

noego · 13/12/2018 22:17

Lochnigar if you can get hold of it.

TheSpottedZebra · 13/12/2018 22:17

Arf at Bells. The stones were probably a present!

TheSpottedZebra · 13/12/2018 22:19

Honestly he has two such polarised whiskies there that it is hard to say what he might like!

YouTheCat · 13/12/2018 22:19

I second the Penderyn Madeira - bloody lovely stuff. We have that and Legend and Myth and Celt and another one, I think.

Fashionista101 · 13/12/2018 22:21

Hmmm...he's not been drinking it long and I'd really like to (for once) put some thought and effort into his present so maybe he's not sure what he really likes yet either?

We're out this weekend so I might try slyly suggest some and see what he likes. I've not really paid much attention until my genius Christmas present idea about 15 mins agoGrin

A whiskey selection box or sign him up to a whiskey club where they send a small whiskey every month with tasting notes.

Thewolvesarerunningagain · 13/12/2018 22:24

I second Caol Ila and for a softer choice Glemorangie (the 10 year old)

sandyoh · 13/12/2018 22:25

He appears new to the game. I'd look into getting him a taster present or a book about whisky so he can understand the ideas behind each distillery.
I come from a family of speysiders. And my DH was introduced via tastings. Grin

ElfOnTheShelfAteMyJoy · 13/12/2018 22:25

I like a Tomatim- nice light Highland, agree with pp re steer away from Islay's DH loves a bhunahabin (sp!) way too peaty for me!

lisasimpsonssaxophone · 13/12/2018 22:25

Nb I am not a DH. All my knowledge is mere lady knowledge

Haha same here. My fiancé hates the stuff, complains that ‘it burns’ whenever I offer him a sip of mine.

I do enjoy a bourbon on ice sometimes but ‘proper’ whisky should only have a drop of water, in my opinion. That said, people should just drink what they like however they most enjoy drinking it!

CoatTails · 13/12/2018 22:25

What’s Aberfeldy like?

YoThePussy · 13/12/2018 22:26

My DF drank Talisker and seemed to think it was good. I Have given it as a present a couple of times and the recipients were extremely pleased.

M, I’am a gin fan, flavoured, plain anything with juniper in it. So much so a friend gave me a make your own gin flavoured lip salve kit.

MilkyCuppa · 13/12/2018 22:27

Does he like sci fi OP? You can buy the whisky glasses that Harrison Ford drinks from in Blade Runner...
