Flashing Christmas Lights [Grumble]

Now let me start off by saying I love Christmas, but my goodness after a shit nights sleep I could happily skip to January and be done with it all. My neighbours have some obnoxious blue and multi coloured Christmas lights, which they have set to stay on all night. Lucky me, I get a crappy lights show keeping me awake.

I bet they wouldn't enjoy them flashing in their living room, so why do they; and others like them, insist on having them on the outside of their house for others to suffer? Angry

TL:/DR AIBU to think that people with flashing Christmas Lights shouldn't inflict them on others?

Bottom line is... you don't see them. All your neighbours do! You're sat inside totally oblivious whilst your neighbours have this flickering coming into their bedrooms/lounge.

Exactly this, if she had to sit and look at them for even 30 minutes i'm sure she would turn them off.

Grace I went to bed at 10.30, so whist i'm glad she turned them off it was far too late in my opinion.

Hi OP just a thought, do you have neighbours either side of you who might be suffering in a similar way and be prepared to speak to her too? Hearing the complaint from more than one source might be enough to prick her conscience (though I'm appalled by the response you got, your complaint should be enough!).

Grace212 · 14/12/2018 09:19

OP I would seriously ring her doorbell earlier and say to her to turn them off. It will make her think. It might seem like she's not capable of that, but I think she is ...somewhere!

seventhgonickname · 14/12/2018 09:24

Lots of houses around me have lights. The neighbours opposite have minimal static lights but next to them are flashing and all the sets are out of sinc.
Luckily for me the worst offenders are at the top and bottom of the street . However all of the turn them off at night.
I like fairy light either static or twinkling.I dislike bright white and blue ones and these seem to be the most common.

Babdoc · 14/12/2018 09:26

To anyone whose selfish shit neighbours are leaving this crap flashing all night - have you tried getting the local council to prosecute them under public nuisance legislation?
They will certainly act on noise pollution- surely light pollution would also give grounds?
A hefty fine might deter the buggers in future!
I do sympathise. My vile neighbours turn their house into a chav vision of Las Vegas for at least six weeks. It’s hideous, but at least off overnight!

Shamalamalam · 14/12/2018 11:13

I had to go round at 11:30pm and ask my neighbours to turn their lights off again last night.

Given they moaned I’d got them out of bed the previous night, you’d think they’d have the sense to turn them off, clearly not

He then had the cheek to complain about my Christmas lights - I’ve got a string of lights around my porch, but they’re just warm white, not very bright and on a timer to go off at 10:30pm

Honestly .....

Grace212 · 14/12/2018 11:15

Sham OMD!!!

what muppets.

AlanThePig · 14/12/2018 11:29

The house opposite mine looks like it's thrown up Christmas. It's far enough away that the lights themselves don't bother me....but. They have them set on some sort of timer so at bang on 4pm the illuminations turn on. Only problem being this then sets off their extremely loud burglar alarm and they aren't home until 6.

A minor irritation compared to most of these, but can't believe that in ten days they've not figured this out yet.

I hate flashing lights, they can trigger my condition (thankfully not as serious as epilepsy), but still not fun and makes me very ill

IceRebel · 16/12/2018 09:32

CrackersDontMatter Not me I promise. Lights have actually been turned off before 10pm the last few nights, so I feel like i'm making progress. Xmas Grin

Can’t you close your curtains? Or better yet, blackouts curtains. But then there'd be nothing to moan about.

8misskitty8 · 16/12/2018 11:27

Vitalogy, my neighbours have their assortment of lights on from about 6am until they go to work. When I get back from my work at about 4.30pm the lights are already back on and stay on until 11/midnight.

So by your logic I would have to have my curtains permanently shut while at home.
Do you have yours shut all the time ?

blackteasplease · 16/12/2018 11:30

Yanbu and I'm glad there's an improvement. I like shutters on my windows.

Vitalogy · 16/12/2018 12:06

8misskitty8 I shut my curtains when it starts getting dark.

As I’ve already said I live in Scotland and it is still a bit dark at 8am when the children are leaving for school and I’m going to work.
The neighbours lights are flashing at that time as well as the evenings so unless I leave my curtains shut all day I’ll still be seeing them.

IceRebel · 16/12/2018 16:41

But then there'd be nothing to moan about.

I do close my curtains. You must have magic curtains with no gap at the top near the curtain pole, as I can still see their disco even with them closed. How about they get rid of their lights, or put them on static, then I really wouldn't have anything at all to moan about. Xmas Angry

In our old flat, the lovely old lady opposite used to have the flashing blue lights as sort of curtains, in her front room and kitchen, which faced into our front room, half glass front door, and bedroom. She used to go to bed about 7:30 and leave them on all night, from November to January - which drove us nuts, but as we had neighbours from hell on all other sides, we wanted to continue our friendly relationship and so said nothing. When she died we were pretty sad, we really had liked her a lot, and then my DH piped up with “at least we won’t have those crazy blue lights on over Christmas!” And after my initial response of wondering how he could say something so evil, I realised that it would be quite nice not to have a permanent ambulance light in our peripheral vision for a quarter of the year. Her daughter then swiftly moved into her flat, and promptly took up the tradition of the blue lights, adding to it all those inflatable puffy things that she strung up from the outdoor pipes, so they would swing and sway with the wind. A giant Santa and giant snowman. Every time you could sort of get your eyes off of the distraction of the blue lights, a giant Santa would swoop across your eyeline. They were lovely people but I’m glad we moved!

xJessica · 16/12/2018 17:29

Ours don't flash but we have some projected onto the house that go off when DD goes to bed because they shine into her room so they're off around 8-8.30. We don't have any neighbours anyway, only horses and sheep!

Poshjock · 16/12/2018 18:12

My nephew lived opposite one of those houses that was covered in them, a bit like the news article linked up thread. He said it was horrendous and was one of the reasons he moved his family. The decorations started at the beginning of November, all in place by the end of Nov and remained until mid January. He said it was bright as day time all evening til 11pm and mornings - they were so bright. But the constant traffic, unable to get in and out his street and drive without long waits, tinny Christmas Muzak and fake ho-ho-hos, chatter, shouting, crying, horn tooting, press visits etc. Every day. The chap got loads of money for charity so DN felt he couldn’t complain but over two months of the year his toddlers were not sleeping due to noise and flashing lights was too much.

hellswelshy · 16/12/2018 18:22

Oh dear I have something to add here. Our ndn lights have been on & flashing for the last week. My daughter, who is admittedly quite light sensitive, asked if she could go and ask them if the could turn them off earlier (so about 830 instead off 11). I agreed, told her to be polite. I then get a knock on the door from ndn ranting that we had sent our dd around and we should have come if there was a complaint and they have lived there for 40 years without anyone complaining.... sigh. So now no flashing lights but neighbours ranting on the doorstep and hating us Blush
