Flashing Christmas Lights [Grumble]

Now let me start off by saying I love Christmas, but my goodness after a shit nights sleep I could happily skip to January and be done with it all. My neighbours have some obnoxious blue and multi coloured Christmas lights, which they have set to stay on all night. Lucky me, I get a crappy lights show keeping me awake.

I bet they wouldn't enjoy them flashing in their living room, so why do they; and others like them, insist on having them on the outside of their house for others to suffer? Angry

TL:/DR AIBU to think that people with flashing Christmas Lights shouldn't inflict them on others?

Closing the curtains doesnt work as you can still see them, but when I speak to the neighbour I will suggest a timer which will hopefully be a reasonable compromise.

I also love the wire cutter idea and sympathise with others who have had the same problem. I hope neighbours listen to me or else it's going to be a hellish few weeks. Sad

Sorry to hear about your niece Babyshark it must be so distressing for her.

Put a note through their door or put your own lights up.

These are nice,

I loathe flashing lights, who on god's earth think they look good? They don't! (my opinion of course). Luckily my neighbours haven't got them. Those who who have lights outside, they are all static... very understated, and they all go off by 11pm, me included. My idea of hell would be living next to someone who started putting up their Christmas lights in August and had one of those 'displays'.

brizzledrizzle · 13/12/2018 08:25

Can you imagine if your neighbours had a house like this?

It's great though as they raise a lot of money for charity.

IceRebel · 13/12/2018 08:42

Skaters I like your style. Grin

I'm glad it's not just me who thinks flashing lights look awful, the only people who seem to like them are those who put them up. Which makes no sense as they; like my neighbour, don't actually get to see them Confused

"These are very quick flashing ones, in 2 colour schemes and i'm sure if the neighbours had to sit and look at them for even half an hour they would realise how annoying they are."

Anybody thinking what I'm thinking? OP go and make that trip to the Xmas lights aisle in B&Q 😂😂😂

IceRebel · 13/12/2018 08:51

brizzledrizzle That house would be horrible to live next to. I get that they have raised an impressive amount for charity but it just looks so tacky and thrown together. Although I will note it doesn't look like they have many high speed flashing lights, so well done them.

I really dislike the blue lights, look like emergency services are dealing with an incident ahead when you’re driving.

Shamalamalam · 13/12/2018 08:59

YANBU!

My neighbours opposite have horrible flashing blue lights all over their house

I have to go over every night to ask them to turn them off. You’d think after the first time they were asked they’d get the message, but no.

They got very shirty with me when I went over at 11pm last night as they’d already gone to bed - turn the fucking lights off then for fucks sake. I shouldn’t have to keep asking!

Even with blackout curtains in our bedroom, it was awful

NOOOO I just couldn't do it to my other lovely neighbours. However give me an open door to this neighbours house, and i'll decorate the inside like a neon flashing rainbow that only they will be able to "enjoy"

Neighbours across the road have flashing lights on their tree, and just behind that a flashing 'curtain' of lights that completely block access to their front door (bet the postie is cursing!) and a family of lit up reindeer. The bloody lights are on all night. We are lucky that we are not directly opposite. I am waiting for our lovely neighbour next door to snap and go over in the middle of the night in a commando-style raid and cut all the bloody wires! All this shit went up after we put out a tiny tasteful, non-flashing, on a timer display (lights on a tiny tree and a single light on a model). We're not trying to 'keep up with the Jones', but they clearly are.

Mind you, there are a couple of houses locally that are much worse, but fortunately, they aren't in our street.

guiltynetter · 13/12/2018 09:13

Honestly this thread is so grumpy! Christmas lights should be banned?! it's my for a few weeks each year. My neighbours across the road have loads of lights but I can't see them in my bedroom and they keep them on all night. Maybe people need better blackout curtains? or a sleep mask?

I do agree with the flashing though. not sure why they have that setting.

IceRebel · 13/12/2018 09:20

That's the whole point of me starting the thread.
Lights outside - fine
Flashing lights which remain on all night - not fine

I'm not against Christmas lights, but my neighbours have blue and multi coloured flashing lights outside that are keeping me awake. Not sure why I should be the one to buy black out curtains, or start wearing a sleep mask. When they could do (and hopefully will when I speak to them) the right thing by turning them off or having none flashing ones.

Candle the mental image of this is too funny, although I sympathise with your lovely neighbour if she does indeed go ahead and cut the wires. There's still at least another 2 weeks of flashing lights to endure. Shock

No idea why people do the outdoor flashing lights thing, it looks rubbish! My daughter had to wear a sleep mask because of our neighbours display last year Xmas Confused They haven't put it up this year, hopefully they blew up!!

IceRebel · 13/12/2018 09:37

Me either, maybe it's because they hate their neighbours? It's also pretty anti-social, especially if like my neighbour they don't turn it off over night.

Not one person has said that

Thesuzle · 13/12/2018 09:51

Wait till they are out. And nip over and cut very carefully the wires !

Ifailed · 13/12/2018 09:52

No idea why people do the outdoor flashing lights thing

In my totally unscientific survey, it's the man who goes out buys these things, saying it's for the kids. Really, it's just a bit of public willy-waving, a childish competition between male neighbours.

AlwaysWantedToBeATenenbaum · 13/12/2018 09:52

Eye mask?

minisoksmakehardwork · 13/12/2018 10:07

I love that the woman who cut the lights was probably pissed off there were two sets and the ones which presumably annoyed her more were still flashing.

My bugbear is multiple sets which don't flash in synchroneity. So like the cut lights one set flashes slightly off to the other.

But yanbu to ask them to please turn them off at a reasonable time. If they are approachable, would you feel comfortable inviting them in to show what you are experiencing?

Grace212 · 13/12/2018 10:12

why do people want these? they can't see them. they bother other people. what is the point?

Oblomov18 · 13/12/2018 10:15

I don't understand the objection to flashing lights. Flashing lights are fab. I drive ds's back from football practice last night at 7.30pm and we saw loads of fab displays.

All lights should be in a timer though!!
