To not want my 11 week old to have chicken pox?

Hello,
My dnephew has chicken pox. BIL and SIL live a few hours away from us and the rest of the in laws and have come up this week and are staying with mil for a visit before Christmas as dn obviously can't go to school. AIBU to say I do not want to visit with them this time as I do not want my 11 week old baby coming down with chicken pox, especially this close to Christmas? Mil keeps saying how it's best for them to get it young and it's not fair for me to keep baby away as they've only seen her once and dn will be so upset to not see her 🙄 (he's 6 and says baby's are boring).
My dh is on my side.

YANBU! Over the summer my MIL got shingles. Neither our 3 yo or 4/5 mo (at the time) had had chicken pox. So we didn't see her for several weeks because I didn't want to have to miss out on going on our family holiday. Apparently one of MIL's friends told her we were being ridiculous, that it's "better for them to get it young" Hmm

Chicken pox in a child wearing nappies is a special kind of hell. Everything under the nappy can turn into what looks one spot as it's so red and sore. Keep well away from anyone infectious if they won't keep away from you.

AmIRightOrAMeringue · 12/12/2018 17:08

Don't to. Between 6 - 8 weeks the immunity they got from you wears off I believe and they are still so young they could be v v poorly.

And the 'better to get it young' thing is bollocks - yes it's better to get it as a child than an adult. But when they're 1 you can vaccinate if you want so they needn't actually get it at all

My word, your MIL sounds like a selfish, manipulative trout. It's best for them not to catch it at all. YANBU.

Getting chicken pox under 1 year makes them more likely to get childhood shingles. Ds had chicken pox at around 6 months and then shingles at age 3.

minisoksmakehardwork · 12/12/2018 20:44

@dementedpixie - thanks for that. I now know not to just write it off as unlikely.

Definitely wouldn't want to mess around with chicken pox at 11 weeks. Still too vulnerable. I'd avoid them then get vaccinated when they're old enough.

Hidillyho · 12/12/2018 21:07

DD was 18 months when she got it and was horrendously ill with it requiring antibiotics. Definitely do not go around them

HestiaParthenos · 12/12/2018 21:12

I am bit sceptical of this trend to vaccinate against absolutely everything, but clearly "better to get it early" applies to toddlers and older, not babies.

YANBU.

My son had chicken pox at 8 months, which was awful for him and he ended up with infected scabs.
Apparently children contracting CP under 12 months of age are more likely to get recurrent shingles and my son had shingles a few weeks ago, which, again, was painful and miserable for him.
Why anyone would intentionally do this to a child is beyond me.

My dd had chicken pox at 20 weeks old my ds was 4, there was a outbreak I his class.

It was the worst time of my life, my dd was so so so ill, l was so scared for her especially as a doctor said and l quote "oh my god l heave never seen so many in such a young person".

Take care.

Amallamard · 12/12/2018 22:17

One of mine got it at 11weeks and was really ill. YADNBU.
