My husband and I picked out a name for our son and a few days after he was born DH said he didn't think the name fit. So now we are back to the drawing board!

We have two other children with classic children's names and a surname that has two syllables.

Names we narrowed down to are

Arthur (husband no longer likes this one!)

Jonathan

David

Andrew

Feedback and suggestions welcome.

David

hammeringinmyhead · 12/12/2018 11:21

I like Andrew. We have just used David as a middle name.

*I just see Jon, Dave and Andy! Names which are a bit old fashioned these days but not in a Nice classic kind of way.

What about Roger, Geoffrey or Alan?*

Roger and Geoffrey definitely aren't old fashioned in a classic nice way. I imagine a palaeontology lecturer sat with his legs crossed reading the Guardian with a thinly checked shirt and wipsy grey beard when I think of these names! Alan is my Grandad's name so will always have a special place in my heart but the first two should stay in the early 20th century Grin

I like Jonathan and think it's a criminally underused name. Love Dave, but not David. But I'm with the majority who find Alexander a lovely, old fashioned name, and also Joseph. Christopher is my brothers name, and he's 26 now and has never been shortened to Chris ever surprisingly. His friends use a different nickname and we all stick to Christopher, it's a great name.

From your short list Andrew or Jonathan. Not from your short list but mentioned above Alexander

Frosty66611 · 12/12/2018 11:29

Out of those I like Jonathan the best followed by Andrew. Not too keen on the others.
Other suggestions:
William
George
Benjamin
Samuel
Frances
Adrian
Charles

LaurieMarlow · 12/12/2018 11:37

Of your list I'd go for jonathan. Solid name, lots of good short options.

David/Andrew are great names but more of our generation than the current one.

I can't abide Arthur. Just a personal thing but I've always hated it.

penisbeakerfan1 · 12/12/2018 11:38

Arthur - massively overused and a bit of an obvious attempt to join an upper class that you aren't part of.

Jonathan - very 1980s. if you call him this, buy him a massive moblie phone and a snazzy jumper ASAP. Also, he'll just be called Jon for the rest of his life anyway so you may as well shorten it from the start and prevent him having to clarify it for all official occasions later.

David - are you Welsh? if not, steer clear of this one as it's far too common and rather boring.

Andrew - To be honest I just think of Prince Andrew and his grabbiness, and I think the name is pretty overused.

These names are all a bit boring in my opinion. Why not try to give your child a name he doesn't always have to share with 20 other children in his class? I like:

Brandon
Theodore
Balthazar
Gideon
Titus
Cason
Jax

AlphaJuno · 12/12/2018 11:39

Andrew. Underused these days but a classic. Biased as was my dear late dad's name.

LaurieMarlow · 12/12/2018 11:53

So according to penisbeakerfan (love the user name) 'Arthur'

is a bit of an obvious attempt to join an upper class that you aren't part of

But Gideon and Balthazar are not? Grin

Walkerbean16 · 12/12/2018 11:55

Jonathon is the only one I'd pick from your list, the others are a bit dated.

hammeringinmyhead · 12/12/2018 12:42

Oh god. Don't call a poor defenceless baby Balthazar.

ViragoKnows · 12/12/2018 12:48

Arthur - massively overused and a bit of an obvious attempt to join an upper class that you aren't part of.

Confused Arthur? Exclusively upper class? No it’s not. What are you blithering on about?

HerewardTheWoke · 12/12/2018 12:49

Simon
Joseph
William
Thomas
Samuel
Stephen
Philip
Anthony

Crimbobimbo · 12/12/2018 12:51

They re all quite 'safe', but Jonathan is my favourite

Disfordarkchocolate · 12/12/2018 12:52

Andrew and David are my favourites from your list.

marvellousnightforamooncup · 12/12/2018 12:55

I like David.

My current favourites for boys are Alexander and Luke.

DontCallMeCharlotte · 12/12/2018 13:00

WHAAAT??? This is a joke right?

NonExistentFox · 12/12/2018 13:00

If it helps, I correctly predicted what my neighbours would call their third child based on the names of the other two...

MollyHuaCha · 12/12/2018 13:04

Arthur - nice

Jonathan - v nice

David - my favourite from the four

Andrew -nice

Absentwomen · 12/12/2018 13:04

Dominic

TheChickenOfTruth · 12/12/2018 13:07

sigh - I like Gabriel, but my husband thinks boys at school would just call the kid "Gay" for short because kids suck.

Many of my favourite names seem to be out because the first initial combined with our last name spells a rude word and that would 100% end up being their nickname. Think G.Ash or P. Rick or something. Nightmare.

So advice is to try and forsee the rude nicknames. Never unknowingly name your child "And Droopy Cock" or something. 😂

DontCallMeCharlotte · 12/12/2018 13:16

Cason

Is this a typo?

CrookedMe · 12/12/2018 13:20

I love Jonathan.

autumnkate · 12/12/2018 13:21

John? More classy than Jonathan, I think.
