To be utterly seething and have told this white lie

I live very near 3 large secondary schools and suck up some of the annoying driving that comes with the drop off time.

Today however I was leaving my house (10 mins late which I know is my problem) to go to work to see a woman parked OVER MY DRIVE getting her son out of the car, I tell her I need to go to work.
She says she always does it and there is never a car there, I point out that there is and I need to go to work, she turns round and says she just needs to help little jimmy carry his cello and PE kit to the school.
I’m fuming by this point so turn round and tell her I work for the council (true) and ill just issue her a massive fine as soon as I get into the office (this is bullshit and I have no power to do this at all).

She properly got the hump but did drive off.
WIBU feel a bit embarrassed now Blush

I used to live close to 2 schools and the inconsiderate parking drove me mad.

The council put yellow lines along the stretch of road where my house was with no parking in the morning or afternoon (school times). It meant any resident whose car was parked there had to move it but, needless to say, lots of parents ignored it and still parked there.

amyboo · 11/12/2018 10:32

In the country where I live you can be towed for parking across someone's access (driveway, garage, etc).... Fair enough i say.

billybagpuss · 11/12/2018 11:02

To be fair to little Jimmy, having experienced years of an undersized child carrying an oversized instrument carrying a cello when young does often need help.

That in no way excuses parking and behaving like a complete dick though. We used to get there super early and park in the school visitors car park on instrument days.

babybunny123 · 11/12/2018 11:03

Good for you, there are double yellow lines at the side of my house and the number of idiots who park on them is unbelievable and go ape when they get a ticket. I have even had some people knocking on my door asking me if I saw the warden, what difference does that make. Don't park there !!!

Workreturner · 11/12/2018 11:25

Your lie was ridiculous!!!

She was appallingly inconsiderate though

JemSynergy · 11/12/2018 11:39

I drive my son to school and I never ever park across blocking someones drive I won't even overhang the drive and will always get out and have a quick check as I know how frustrating it is. Last month we had parents evening and I was sat in my car waiting, a mother pulls up and parks her car very badly half way across someones drive and runs off down the road. Obviously late for her appointment so didn't give a damn where she was parking.

LadyinLavende · 11/12/2018 11:44

I think your lie was quick thinking and that CFs deserve to be lied to. I have absolutely no qualms about lying to unsolicited phone callers, chuggers etc etc.

EdisonLightBulb · 11/12/2018 12:01

Sadly that is fairly typical behaviour witnessed too often for those unlucky enough to live near a school.
Another parent justified their parking across my drive because “they had a child”

Yes, yes & yes! I have this daily, I live on a road with 2 primary and 1 very large comprehensive school.

WhatsUpHun · 11/12/2018 12:18

I got home last night and someone was parked over my drive... fucking hundreds of spaces all along the road...

Fuckwrs

brizzledrizzle · 11/12/2018 12:21

YANBU. I'd be tempted to offer to carry little Jimmy's cello as I know what I'd be tempted to do with the bow. He can carry his own cello anyway, my DC always carried theirs.
She's being a CF.

Bobaboutwhat · 11/12/2018 12:24

Wow - this woman is one entitled twat! “There isn’t usually a car there”, “she has to get her son to school”....AND???

brizzledrizzle · 11/12/2018 12:25

To be fair to little Jimmy, having experienced years of an undersized child carrying an oversized instrument carrying a cello when young does often need help.

The cello isn't going to be full size though, they don't have a 4/4 until they are about 14. Even if they are 5 the cello is either going to be a little smaller/a little larger than a ruler as a 1/10 and 1/8 cello are both c. 30cm long.

SoupDragon · 11/12/2018 12:26

Not to be sexist...

😂😂😂

5foot5 · 11/12/2018 12:27

Presumably you could tell which school little Jimmy was headed for by the uniform?

I would be tempted to send a letter of complaint to the school asking them to remind all parents to be considerate and not park across neighbours drives. Might do no good but even if it turns up as an entry in the newsletter it might possible (or possibly not) make the CF think about it for a nano second or two

speakout · 11/12/2018 12:30

YABU to be "utterly seething".

I see it could be annoying, but to feel that way over something fairly trivial?

Life's too short.

brizzledrizzle · 11/12/2018 12:30

Not to be sexist, I have seen and experienced situations when a female behind a wheel gets to act as if they answer to no-one

Whereas men always behave like Mother Teresa when behind the wheel?

GabsAlot · 11/12/2018 12:35

id say that was reasonable if she just have apologised and moved u wouldnt have had to say it

Roomba · 11/12/2018 12:35

A friend of mine was being neglected during labour and generally treated badly. The next time a new midwife asked 'what do you do for work?' she growled 'I'm a medical negligence lawyer...' Not true, though she is a lawyer - you'd be amazed how much her level of care improved over the next few hours though!

Mummyoflittledragon · 11/12/2018 12:49

5foot5
The parents don’t care. From my experience the school hardly does either. I’ve asked school to write to parents at dds school asking them not to park in disabled spaces to leave me a space, which should be guaranteed as I have a badge. School put it in the newsletter a month later and it changed absolutely nothing.

Orangecake123 · 11/12/2018 12:51

YANBU!

I'd be leaving late too just to check on her- and maybe consider getting those poles that go up and down to try to trap her. xDD

TheChickenOfTruth · 11/12/2018 12:52

I was looking into this and it's actually not illegal for someone to park on your drive without your permission. It's illegal to park across your drive, either blocking your car in or parking over a dropped kerb, but if they plonk it straight on your drive, there's nothing you can do about it without taking them to court (which is obviously expensive).
So, you know, don't piss her off too much in case she figures that out. 😂

Topseyt · 11/12/2018 13:08

I think you did the right thing. Good thinking. Not at all ridiculous.

She parked like a twat. She thoroughly deserved your response.

DownThePan · 11/12/2018 13:08

I used to walk 40 mins to school with a full-size cello in a hard case on me back!

Although I did end up with a slipped disc in my early 20s - maybe related to that!?!

Justaboy · 11/12/2018 13:09

Whereas men always behave like Mother Teresa when behind the wheel?

?? more women take children to school then men?.

SoupDragon · 11/12/2018 13:18

more women take children to school then men?

The poster who made the "sexist" comment wasn't talking about the school run.
