To hate the word ‘pop’?

dinosaurglitterrepublic · 11/12/2018 06:57

I have no problem with a balloon going pop or pop music. It is the use of pop in place of another word that irritates me. So to pop something in the post, pop yourself down, pop along to a place etc.

I am fully prepared for many people to wonder why I care (it’s just one of those things I can’t explain) and that IABU especially as I see it regularly used on here. Perhaps I am hoping to find a like minded spirit!

I hate picky bits for food too @sparklingbrook it makes me think of the scraps in the food bin and magpies fighting for dropped bread.
Pop well I don't use it but it doesn't make me cringe as much as "fizzy pop" for coke.
Just say coke! Angry

BoswellandForshort · 11/12/2018 15:24

My husband runs. “I’m just going to run down to the shop” “I’ll run to Tesco after work”. I’ve never seen him actually run in the whole time we’ve been together.

I’m a terrible popper. I pop to the shops, pop round my mum’s, pop things on the counters, pop myself on benches. Pop pop pop.

trulybadlydeeply · 11/12/2018 15:31

I pop alot, although sometimes nip. I may start getting adventurous though, and run, dash or shoot on occasions.

However I'm with the PP on "fur babies". No they are not your babies. They are your pets. Much loved pets, I am sure, but having a pet is completely different to having a child.

lifebeginz · 11/12/2018 16:10

Oh yes I am a bit of a "nipper" too!

beanaseireann · 11/12/2018 16:47

I hate it being used for Pepsi/ Coke or Fanta

What do you call them?
I call them minerals

KOKOagainandagain · 11/12/2018 17:24

Ah, you have forgotten hopping - much loved by health care professionals - pop off your pants and hop on the bed. You need to see an autistic child trying to literally do this whilst the Dr shamefacedly says 'I asked for that' to truly appreciate this.

HildaZelda · 11/12/2018 17:43

Oh yes, I hate 'picky bits' or worse again 'picky tea'.

IsThereRoomAtTheInn · 11/12/2018 17:53

I quite like to eat a picky tea.

Sparklingbrook · 11/12/2018 17:55

A picky tea makes me think of someone picking their way through bits of food and putting it back or something. Bleurgh.

It's a buffet surely?

IsThereRoomAtTheInn · 11/12/2018 17:57

I'd feel cheated if it didn't include a sausage roll or similar.

BumDisease · 11/12/2018 18:12

I've thought about it and I tend to "jump" down the the shop... not literally though!

Also agree on poorly, absolutely hate it. It's so pathetic sounding.

Oysterbabe · 11/12/2018 19:24

You hop onto the bed at the doctors or the dentist chair. You also hop in the bath. Can you pop in the bath if you aren't going to be long? 🤔

AntMoon · 11/12/2018 19:27

Oh I say pop a lot. Confused

I'll pop over. Shall I pop this over here? Just popping out. No, I've popped there.

I raise you....

moist

Worst word ever.

CaptainPovey · 11/12/2018 19:48

I stick it in the oven, shove it in the bin, shove it in the washer/dishwasher. I nip or run to the bog depending on the urgency; don't pop that much but cannot get worked up about it.

I also sometimes I even go shop!! heinous crime on mumsnet

Language is fab, when I find something I like I use it. Some of my work friends use 'bob'. Not quite got round to that one yet, but I am thinking of it.

I have noticed now that 'See you in a bit' is now very popular as opposed to see you later

My favourite thing my dear old mum and me used to say before she died: 'Who's dead what we know?,' when reading the local rag. We both knew it was wrong, but it was right for us Grin

IncorrigibleTitmouse · 11/12/2018 19:59

Same. It grates. I feel the same way about tweeness, it makes me cringe. Pop, ickle or lickle, ‘little man’, fur babies, ‘picky bits’, gaaah! Hideous.

NotAColdWomanHenry · 11/12/2018 20:02

I'm the most extreme word fascist and hate all kinds of things, but weirdly I don't mind pop at all. I pop to the shops, pop the washing in, pop a cardie on! I don't even mind "pop of colour" and "that colour makes your eyes pop!" - they're weird, but don't annoy me. All this pop stuff is not really a recent fad, maybe that's why I feel comfortable with it.

I would much rather pop to the shop than say "I'm going shop" "I'm going cinema" aaaaarrrggggh! I know it makes total sense as an inevitable language change, and I'll probably say it myself when I'm 80. But it sounds so DUMB.

I lose all respect for people who say "pacifically" too (unless they actually mean pacifically), but I heard it on RADIO 4 the other day! Hell in a handcart I tell you.

IncorrigibleTitmouse · 11/12/2018 20:05

@NotAColdWomanHenry I have found my people! A friend’s spouse used to always say “Going shop” “Going pub” etc. It drove me demented. Every time I’d visit I’d say “to the” immediately after he said it. He disliked me immensely. 😂

DonaldDucksTowel · 11/12/2018 20:18

I don’t pop, I nip

I think pop sounds passive aggressive somehow Confused

BumDisease · 11/12/2018 20:20

Every time I see "food of the gods" I get irrationally angry!

bumblebee39 · 11/12/2018 20:26

I'm pregnant at the moment and people keep saying "gosh aren't you blooming/massive, you must be about to pop"
I'm hardly into the second trimester and hate the phrase anyway
Unless your Mrs Radford I don't think you "pop" babies out...

Hyacynth68 · 24/02/2020 13:49

It was a relief to find this thread! I loathe the word 'pop' and was glad to see the words 'twee' and 'infantilising'. Thank you !! It is also often euphemisitc. as with the boss someone mentioned. I often sense when someone starts 'popping things' that there is danger about. The only dentist who ever hurt me had just made me cringe with "Let's pop your bib on shall we?"

Blackandgreenteas · 24/02/2020 14:05

Yanbu because I often use it to be annoying!

Katiepoes · 24/02/2020 14:29

I nip out, but swing by if already out. I stick things, and maybe jump or hop, but never pop. I am with you OP.

I can still remember a scan for suspected gallstones (oh the glamour) when the doctor told me to 'pop up there on the bed for me and I'll have a little listen to your tummy'. Pop? For me? Little listen? TUMMY? It's a good thing she wasn't checking my blood pressure. Shudder.
