To hate the word ‘pop’?

I have no problem with a balloon going pop or pop music. It is the use of pop in place of another word that irritates me. So to pop something in the post, pop yourself down, pop along to a place etc.

I am fully prepared for many people to wonder why I care (it’s just one of those things I can’t explain) and that IABU especially as I see it regularly used on here. Perhaps I am hoping to find a like minded spirit!

Ahem

PipGoesPop · 11/12/2018 08:41

My husband swings 'I'll swing by the shops' 😂 I pop and nip.

dinosaurglitterrepublic · 11/12/2018 08:43

I have a friend that shoots everywhere "I'm shooting to the shops" etc. Could that be an alternative to popping?

Yes! My dad is a ‘shooter’. I have never put the two things together before you mentioned it and I don’t mind shooting. Perhaps because it serves the purpose of indicating a speed. You don’t tell someone to shoot themsleves down or shoot something in the post. But you can shoot off an email- again this denotes doing something quickly though. Hmm...

I only realised that I use Pop and Grab a lot when my toddler started doing it too.
"I'm going to pop upstairs and grab my cardigan"

BitOutOfPractice · 11/12/2018 08:49

Op you could fire off an email

dinosaurglitterrepublic · 11/12/2018 08:49

*"I need to wash something quickly, so am loading the washing machine. I don't intend to sort all through the linen basket and take a look around for anything else that needs washing. If you need something washing quickly let me know right now - with no faffing about."

There is no way I'm saying that - "I'm popping some laundry in" communicates it very well. grin*

Okay, I see your point (although I still don’t like the word). I have my doubts that all users of ‘popping’ are quite so regimented in its use though. I bet there are people who pop in a load of washing having sorted the linen basket and scoured the darkest corners of their house for stray socks.

YANBU. I agree. Hate it. So twee.

Broken11Girl · 11/12/2018 08:52

I don't think it indicates speed at all

53rdWay · 11/12/2018 08:55

I loathe it because it reminds me of all the useless baby advice I read after having my first (difficult and clingy). “What’s so hard about having a shower? Just pop the baby in the Moses basket/bouncer/pram/cot/high chair and off you go.” I know it’s irrational and yet ‘pop’ still makes me twitch.

AlaskanOilBaron · 11/12/2018 08:55

I hate it too, OP.

Also, as noted upthread, 'bits'.

Popping to the shop for some bits --> hideous

Procne · 11/12/2018 09:01

I'm far more hardline than you, OP. It is more unforgivable than Avada Kedavra. My least favourite use of it is 'pop it on the side'. I think that merits at the very least a small electric shock.

lifebeginz · 11/12/2018 09:22

I am so guilty of this "I am just popping to the shop" "I will just pop this over here" "Why not pop a little plaster on it" haha sorry!

blackteasplease · 11/12/2018 09:41

I use it when I'm being PA Grin

I

HildaZelda · 11/12/2018 09:49

I absolutely hate 'pop of colour'. Sets my teeth on edge. As does 'teamed with' as in, 'So I've teamed the blue top with some black trousers'.
DH runs. "I'll just run to the shop", as he gets in the car.

Bumbledop · 11/12/2018 10:15

I thought this thread was going to be about something else. As in ‘just add a pop of colour’ it sets my teeth on edge. Can’t stand it!!! Anybody else?

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 11/12/2018 10:21

We also run to the shop. I dislike pop unless it's about bubble wrap.

I can't stand poorly. You're either sick or well. Poorly conjours images of wan women of the 1800s who have a fit of the vapours. It's a ridiculous word. Same applies to ghastly.

MarshaBradyo · 11/12/2018 10:22

Yanbu

YourEggnogIsBetterThanMine · 11/12/2018 10:24

I don't mind "pop to the shops" but I hate "fizzy pop". It is fizzy juice or ginger, not fizzy pop Grin

LucieMorningstar · 11/12/2018 10:25

Yes op I agree with you! I read it in a post yesterday, can’t remenber what the post was about now, but she definitely popped something somewhere!

IsThereRoomAtTheInn · 11/12/2018 10:30

I'm a bit concerned at swinging by. I generally pop or nip out.

werideatdawn · 11/12/2018 10:32

Fizzy pop makes me uncomfortable.

Ladymacmuff · 11/12/2018 13:43

I thought this was going to be a thread about grandfathers 😂

TheRealJoseph · 11/12/2018 14:00

Right then, no Corporation Pop for you lot. Grin

masterandmargarita · 11/12/2018 14:04

It reminds me a bit of Mary poppins and I like to think I am practically perfect in every way

PinkFizzz · 11/12/2018 14:08

I never pop. I nip Grin
