Hotel has taken £800+ from my account

I've just returned from a European break we I had a 2 nite stay in a 4 star hotel. We paid cash at the end of my stay of €300 - only you discover that upon arrival at the last when I passed over my card for the €150 security deposit 2 debits of 400+ sterling was taken from my card.

My bank have given me the authorisation codes which I have given to the hotel and they are requesting more evidence! -

I'm so angry I could cry. The lady who checked me and my friend in also tried to overcharge us on Sunday by adding an extra 200 to our bill making it 500 only we challenged her - her response was that English was not her first language so sorry for mistake.

Even if the give me the money back it takes 10 working days - 😢

How much was the bill supposed to be?

SpoonBlender · 10/12/2018 14:44

Just declare it as unauthorised to your bank/credit card co, they'll sort it out.

Whisky2014 · 10/12/2018 14:44

Well the dsecurity deposits usually do go back on your account. I wouldn't worry

interrogate2018 · 10/12/2018 14:48

Bill was euro 300 which we paid cash for - deposit for security is euro 150 not 800 sterling - it will be after Christmas before it is sorted - I'm broke and a single parent 😢

Have you contacted the hotel direct?

pasturesgreen · 10/12/2018 14:54

What is the hotel saying? It seems the receptionist was a bit cavalier in her approach, but then again you will get your money back as you've blatantly been overcharged. Might not take as long as ten days, too! When something similar happened to me, I had the money back in my account within a couple of days.

TulipsInbloom1 · 10/12/2018 14:55

Only on MN could a mistaken withdrawal of £800 be seen as "meh, you will get it back".

£800 on top of the €300 paid on departure is a lot of money for most people.

God forbid she have saved to enjoy a trip with her friend but still not be able to afford EIGHT HUNDRED POUNDS (which is a BIG chunk of many people's monthly wage) out of her account just before Christmas, @RoboticMary Hmm

'Not buying' what exactly? That someone might have treated themselves to a TWO NIGHT break but also not be able to afford 800 quid to just disappear? What a nice, comfortable world you must live in.

interrogate2018 · 10/12/2018 15:09

robotic do one !- I was 30 at the end of last month and my parents gave me money - friend paid for flights - not that it's any of your business

The hotel seems to basically be shrugging their shoulders - so frustrating!

tigwig76 · 10/12/2018 15:09

That's bloody awful. Take it up with fraud department with your bank and they should refund you whilst sorting it out. Hope you get the money back really quick.

purplecorkheart · 10/12/2018 15:10

Did you book with a booking site or direct with the hotel? If it is a booking site contact them. They may have more power than you with the hotel.

SlowNorris · 10/12/2018 15:11

Can you not do what Spoon suggested?

SlowNorris · 10/12/2018 15:11

Once it’s all sorted I’d leave a review on trip advisor too

TwllBach · 10/12/2018 15:11

£800 is MORE than my monthly wage and I think the posters questioning whether it's real because she went away for a mini break are being pretty mean. You don't know if she was gifted that money or she's been saving for two years for it, if it was for a big birthday or if she did six weeks of over time for it. Why shouldn't a broke single parent have 300 euros? Doesn't mean her day to day living isn't frugal.

I'm going on a five night holiday in January with DS and DP. It's costing £250 and I am well into my overdraft and can't afford it. We are going because my DM and MIL have given us that amount for Christmas. You don't know the full story at all.

interrogate2018 · 10/12/2018 15:11

I feel so annoyed with myself now for going - it was my first holiday away from my ds now this!

TwllBach · 10/12/2018 15:12

Cross post Grin I hope you had a lovely time OP and I'm sorry about the £800. I'd feel sick.

Looking4wards · 10/12/2018 15:12

800 GBP is a very round number for the hotel to charge if they usually take Euros. How did the payment show up on your account? Just wondering if an employee took the money fraudulently.

tenbob · 10/12/2018 15:15

Which country is the hotel in?

I'm sure there is a MNer who is fluent in the language who can help you write an email and then translate the response, so you can get to the bottom of this...
