Hotel has taken £800+ from my account

I've just returned from a European break we I had a 2 nite stay in a 4 star hotel. We paid cash at the end of my stay of €300 - only you discover that upon arrival at the last when I passed over my card for the €150 security deposit 2 debits of 400+ sterling was taken from my card.

My bank have given me the authorisation codes which I have given to the hotel and they are requesting more evidence! -

I'm so angry I could cry. The lady who checked me and my friend in also tried to overcharge us on Sunday by adding an extra 200 to our bill making it 500 only we challenged her - her response was that English was not her first language so sorry for mistake.

Even if the give me the money back it takes 10 working days - 😢

If you don’t understand how the troll hunting is infact goading then that’s your problem.

It’s not that I don’t understand, they’re two different things Hmm.

Did they give you a receipt when you paid in cash?

interrogate2018 · 11/12/2018 13:27

Yohooo - yes they did give me a receipt - they have apologised, including the lady who made the error. I thanked her for her apology and to the other person for sorting it out. They also apologised for passing my query around.

Anditstill I agree, troll hunters exist because troll exists its just I wonder if some of them need to take so much glee out of it. I havent been stung so far, though Ive only ever helped out once online in that way. normally if Im helping anyone out its in my day to day life and I can see what is real and what isnt and swerve accordingly.

Mumsnet is great for the support and advice and sometimes a kick up the arse. Its just a pity when you get the odd person pontificating or using a forum to kick someone. It spoils the ethos of mumsnet then.

Hi! I've been in the same situation and it was £1500 pounds!! Contacted the hotel and they apologised but said it will take a few days. I was furious & called them everyday until they reversed the charges. Finally it was sorted in 3 days. Hope yours is done quickly. Call/ email and make yourself a nuisance.

BoglingToAswad · 11/12/2018 16:38

@JuliaAndJulia

Just for future reference of this happens to you again, it takes a few days to be reversed not because the hotel are dragging their heels, but because an authorisation reversal gets sent by the hotel to a verification centre, who process it and tell the bank to release it, and then there is usually also a wait for the bank to process the release.

It always takes a few days from when the hotel cancels the authorisation to see the balance back in your account. If it took three days to see the money back in your account means they reversed the pre-auth either when you checked out, or when you called them the first time.

If they have told you that an authorisation has been released all you have to do is wait, calling every day will not speed the process up at all, because they have already done all they can.

Anyway, thankfully the OP's situation has been resolved Smile.

I once nearly lost a multi continent multi hotel ferries trains complex special permits blah blah holiday because months later one of the main hotels (possibly Indian trains or flights) tried to take a deposit with no warning but I had a new credit card in the interim and just hadn’t thought. Luckily saw email in junk folder and managed to salvage. Yes my fault but god that was stressful. I am now like a hawk once booked anything or change cards etc.
Easy to forget when you sell a car used to still charge congestion charge unless you stopped that registration - friend got badly burned by this and could not recover weeks of someone else driving into zone daily.
Check the small print peeps - be vigilant !
