To think this could be the end of Brexit?

Or at least the beginning of the end, Labour and SNP..... there’s a match made in heaven Shock

I think you need to look at what a Parliamentary democracy is.
No I don't thanks. The country decided they wanted Brexit. Parliament's job is to get Brexit. Some MPs wanted Remain & are therefore doing everything they can to stop it. That is not democracy, that is pure selfishness and vindictiveness.

Malwoddy · 10/12/2018 18:03

Unfortunately the polls have proven themselves on numerous occasions now to be completely inaccurate.
They really haven't. They've been off by relatively small percentages in the last two GEs and the referendum results. They called the correct winning party in each of those two GEs but got the margins wrong. They predicted a very close Brexit result that was now likely to narrowly favour Remain than it was Leave.

They certainly haven't been 24% off.

ShovingLeopard · 10/12/2018 18:08

That is not democracy, that is pure selfishness and vindictiveness.

On the contrary, it is governing in the best interests of the country as a whole. We now have much more information on what Brexit is likely to look like, and how costly the various permutations would be. It would be imbecilic to just plough on regardless, like lemmings.

MissionItsPossible · 10/12/2018 18:15

I think if the vote was redone, Leave would get higher than Remain, more than 52%.

UbbesPonytail · 10/12/2018 18:18

But our democracy states that referendums are advisory and Parliament does not have to ratify them.

Our government is supposed to act in our best interests. Delaying their vote until after Christmas does not do that.

That will likely force a no deal. We then face the trade issues, the nuclear issues, the loss of the NHS, the financial collapse - al before we even get to the disastrous social and cultural implications.

MadeleineMaxwell · 10/12/2018 18:23

Taking back control seems to have meant handing it bag and baggage to Teresa May. I am utterly, completely gobsmacked by what she's done today. Complete selfishness in her drive to cling on to power for her own reasons. Fuck the rest of government, parliament and the country.

She's going to kick that can just as far as it can go down this stupid fucking road. But she'll have to give up the goods at some point. Now we're back to looking at sodding no deal again, just when it had been pretty much nixed by parliament.

I hate this whole thing. It's too damned stressful and divisive.

brizzledrizzle · 10/12/2018 18:26

TM is currently doing a great job of saying lots of words but not answering any of the questions.

Isn't that the norm for politicians?

My parents and I voted remain, so did my daughter. My parents have now decided that it'd be better to leave, they won't be voting in any replacement referendum though. We've had some firm discussions about their change of heart.

JustABetterPlayer · 10/12/2018 18:33

To those saying leave would win if there was another referendum I suspect you are correct. However there is no guarantee what would be on the ballot paper.

*Remain
*The agreed deal
*Hard brexit

Might be a difficult choice for leave advocates to swallow.

Satsumaeater

You don't always do what the mob wants.

You mean the majority of those that voted.

user1471453601 · 10/12/2018 19:41

In any reasonable democracy, surely the advice ( technical papers, advice from the bank of England etc) would have been done in advance of the referendum. Instead Cameron decided to go for the referendum before this has the chance to happen, leading to the out right lies the exit campaign ran (35million a week to the NHS, anyone??). Now, we are up the proverbial s shit creek and the ECJ have just handed us a paddle. Only an idiot would refuse to take it.

All this, for what? Sovernty ( which we never lost) and a blue passport.

BoneyBackJefferson · 10/12/2018 20:07

user1471453601

you would also have thought that they would put in safe guards and not run a campaign that was based on facts and not "your thick and racist if you vote out".

Even if this 'life line' is taken it will further entrench the fact (and it is a fact) that the government will ignore what alot of people want.

I am also starting to believe that this situation is what was being played for all along and we will suddenly have saviours of the country that stopped us from going to rack and ruin (but then I wouldn't trust the government to put me out if I was on fire).

UnknownStuntman · 10/12/2018 20:38

To be fair, if I look at people I know and their social media, those who I thought were thick before the vote have voted out and those who I had some respect for voted remain. It's not particularly scientific, but I am comfortable in saying that leave voters are thick because in my experience, that's exactly what they are.

I don't have anything to do with leave voters as I don't have any respect for people with such an egregious lack of judgment.

GhostSauce · 10/12/2018 20:38

Just revoke the fucker already.

PebbleDashed · 10/12/2018 20:45

Bloody hope so. As user1471453601 points out, there was never a plan. There is no plan, with May cancelling the vote tomorrow. This is just a total joke and Cameron as the instigator ought to be shot.

brizzledrizzle · 10/12/2018 22:10

I suspect that the ballot paper would be the equivalent of

Keep Theresa May in a job
Sack Theresa May and have JRMoggy/Moth/Moron
Sack Theresa May and have Boris

TheyBuiltThePyramids · 10/12/2018 22:12

As someone said above - they loved Rolf Harris. And Jim'llFix It was top Saturday night tv for years and most of my generation wrote him at least one letter. When other information becomes clear at a later date - that there are criminal etc investigations into the people you trusted, it should be fine to change your mind. In fact it would almost seem a bit mad not to do so.

Craft1905 · 10/12/2018 22:35

However, Brexit is bad news for big corporations and the better off, who have more of a say in the way the country is run than us mere mortals.

The ultimate irony of the above drivel is that virtually every protection and benefit working people enjoy has come from the EU, not the UK government. From clean UK beaches for those who can't afford to go abroad, to working time directives and minimum wages, health and safety at work, all from the EU.

The tories have never given a stuff for the workers, and neither did labour under Blair and co. Every good thing the working people have got has come from the EU.

Yes it was mainly working people, especially in the North of England, that voted to leave the only institution who ever really cared about them.

Utterly bonkers.

Coffeebean76 · 11/12/2018 07:38

If we don't get Brexit then democracy has ended too.

Well at least we’ll have saved the economy, jobs, property values, pensions and the value of the pound.

bellinisurge · 11/12/2018 07:42

Yeah, but a fun XFactor-esque vote rather than boring old actual democracy is being ignored.
Don't remember these voices turning out for Council elections, police commissioner elections [whisper it] European elections or general elections.

Coffeebean76 · 11/12/2018 07:46

Very true @bellinisurge
