Or at least the beginning of the end, Labour and SNP..... there’s a match made in heaven Shock

John Bercow just said it was 'Deeply discourteous' to delay the Brexit vote and I've never heard anything so fabulously British in all my life. Grin

ASilhouetteAndNothingMore · 10/12/2018 16:40

I voted leave because I felt the government wasn't interested in what the public actually wanted. I feel if it had been handled correctly, it would have been good for the UK.
However, Brexit is bad news for big corporations and the better off, who have more of a say in the way the country is run than us mere mortals.
I said two years ago there was absolutely no chance that Brexit would happen. They can't let it. They misjudged public feeling and got the wrong answer.
Politics is corrupt, nothing happens that doesn't benefit the rich minority.
Which is why benefit claimants and asylum seekers are the ones who are portrayed to be breaking this country, while the billions lost through legal corporate tax avoidance schemes is happily ignored.
It won't happen. And the fact the EU has now said we can revoke it shows it's also in their interests to keep us in.

UnknownStuntman · 10/12/2018 16:41

Dangly, you don't need evidence that 1.2 million have changed their minds. Based on demographics of voters, there will be enough leave voters died and remain voters come of age since the referendum that by 19 January ( estimated, obviously), remain would win if nobody changed their vote.

BasilFaulty · 10/12/2018 16:41

@danglybangly actually I think the result would be very different....Only one way to find out Wink

bellinisurge · 10/12/2018 16:42

The EU hasn't said we could revoke it. We could always revoke it. We haven't just "been given permission " by the EU.

Butchyrestingface · 10/12/2018 16:43

Hypocrite that I am, I am praying with all my might and trying to bargain with the God I don’t even believe in to make Brexit not happen.

🤞 🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞

UnknownStuntman · 10/12/2018 16:45

Oh, and 1.2 million wouldn't need to change their vote. Some of the lazy bastards who didn't vote could do so in a second referendum but more to the point, the "majority" was less than 1.3 million so 650000 is all it takes. Or 1% of the population.

badlydrawnperson · 10/12/2018 16:52

@ASilhouetteAndNothingMore I generally agree with your analysis. Someone's already been along to point out that we always had the option to revoke article 50 - but it has been properly clarified recently.

DanglyBangly · 10/12/2018 16:58

unknown is that a fact? Has someone done the maths on that? That is intriguing and gives me hope

Take your point about the majority - statistics not my strong point Confused

UbbesPonytail · 10/12/2018 17:08

Referendums in Britain are only advisory. They never had to pitch it as a definite.

TM is currently doing a great job of saying lots of words but not answering any of the questions.

After the economical forecast I do not see how any PM could knowingly plunder her people into it. It’s irresponsible at best, pure evil at worst.

OutragedERIC · 10/12/2018 17:09

That’s an interesting point. In my family alone, since the referendum, one Leave voter has passed away and two DC who would want to remain have reached voting age

BasilFaulty · 10/12/2018 17:11

@danglybangly it's really interesting isn't it, I hadn't thought about the death/birth numbers either. Praying to the EU gods it happens 🙏🙏🙏

ASilhouetteAndNothingMore · 10/12/2018 17:12

@badlydrawnperson I know it was an option all along, but it wasn't very well publicised. From the result, the majority of the media were against it, and therefore it was never going to happen.
To see educated colleagues sharing the scare stories on social media was an eye opener. It's such an emotive subject, and I think there are a lot of people who think we should leave and the others who think we should remain. But there are also the people who don't care either way as long as we can enjoy a comfortable life and see our children do well. There are a lot bigger issues with this country than whether brexit is going to happen, and I think we need to start focusing on the massive social injustice in the country, which Brexit is overshadowing.

Pass the Gin fgs it's painful

Abra1de · 10/12/2018 17:16

Jophie

Presumably the anti-colonial message would be impacted to the French, Germans, Belgians and Spanish? Plus the Dutch and Italians?

Because all European countries had colonies. And many of them were exploitative in a horrifying way. Congo, anyone?

Abra1de · 10/12/2018 17:18

And BTW, Scottish and Irish people were disproportionately represented in running the BRITISH, not English, Empire. A visit to Victorian cemeteries in India makes this point rather vividly.

Malwoddy · 10/12/2018 17:27

Newly released YouGov poll results showing 62% for Remain, 38% for Leave.

Dongdingdong · 10/12/2018 17:28

Newly released YouGov poll results showing 62% for Remain, 38% for Leave.

Unfortunately the polls have proven themselves on numerous occasions now to be completely inaccurate.

1ndig0 · 10/12/2018 17:37

Has TM announced how long she is postponing this vote for? I think she will leave it to the last minute so MPs have no choice - it will be this deal or no deal. Neither is appealing.

I hope there will be some way of a people’s vote and we can forget this whole shambles ever happened. Brexiteers couldn’t forsee this. What a total waste of time and money. An embarrassment for the nation.

Satsumaeater · 10/12/2018 17:38

If we don't get Brexit then democracy has ended too

You don't always do what the mob wants.

Anyway as I have said au nauseum on here, the referendum should never have been called on the basis that the GFA was based on the premise that both Ireland and the UK were in the EU.

And therefore, the UK could not leave the EU without breaching the GFA. There is no good reason that outweighs peace in Northern Ireland, or adhering to an international treaty. Therefore we are now in this backstop difficulty - and if we leave without a deal, we still have the issue of NI (and Gibraltar). A deal (or no Brexit) of some sort has to happen.

Satsumaeater · 10/12/2018 17:40

Yes - if we were to revoke the Art 50 notice the damage would take a while to repair - and the millions (billions) spent in preparations wasted.

And 3 years of limbo for EEA citizens living in the UK - for no good reason.

bellinisurge · 10/12/2018 17:48

Wonder if her "we must respect the view in NI" is the threat/promise of a referendum there on the backstop?

HauntedPencil · 10/12/2018 17:55

I am he.

You know people can change their mind with new information right? I used to love Rolf Harris Hmm

PortiaCastis · 10/12/2018 18:00

In my very small family one leave voter has died in December 2016 and dd gained her vote in October 2016 but too late to vote in the referendum however she would vote remain, so one more leave vote lost and one remain vote gained.
I hope TM isn't playing for time so we crash out that would be dreadful
