To think I should be entitled to my money back?

I took my daughter and her friend to an event yesterday. A couple of days before the event I decided that I would go with her as she was anxious about going without me. By this point tickets had sold out, so I bought one on a site for buying and selling event tickets.

I was a bit worried about this, as the system is that the seller uploads their emailed ticket, and then upon payment the buyer is emailed the ticket by site (not the seller directly). It did occur to me that there was nothing to stop people from doing this, but still attending the event themselves, but just making sure they got there really early so they were still likely to be the first one to use the ticket. Tickets are scanned when you get there and obviously each barcode can only be used once.

We got to the front of the queue yesterday at the event, and I gave the security man the three tickets. He scanned the one I’d recently bought first, and the scanner made a no sound. At the moment, the man got distracted by something his colleague said to him, and then he turned back to the scanner and looked confused and said “have you already been in and come out again”. I said no and he said “oh, I must have done something wrong there”, then scanned my other tickets and let us in.

I could tell from the noise the scanner made that the first ticket had already been used. I got an email today from the site I bought it from asking if everything had been ok with it, and I chose the ‘no’ option. I then had to fill out a form where I honestly said what had happened, but that we still got into the event.

The seller messaged me back to say he was sorry, but he had uploaded the wrong ticket to the site, and used the one he’d uploaded by mistake. Now this is possible, but on the other hand he could have been planning to scam me all along.

AIBU to think I should be entitled to get my money back, as what I bought was a valid ticket to the event, but that’s not what I received? I’m not sure how far I’ll get as I’ve already told the site I still got in, but that was a complete fluke.

Sorry that was long 😂

Erm no I don’t.

The only people who lost out were the venue.

Beebee8 · 09/12/2018 22:29

I don't think you should really try getting your money back, it could have been an honest mistake - nobody would be able to prove otherwise. You've reported it anyway which is enough

itsbetterwithoutyou · 09/12/2018 22:29

No why should you, you got in.

Motherwell91 · 09/12/2018 22:30

Meh.. he could of been. But the outcome was exsactly what you paid for access to the event. I would just leave it

m0therofdragons · 09/12/2018 22:31

I would expect a refund to teach the seller a lesson but I'd feel guilty keeping the money so donate it to charity then I'd feel comfortable.

Vegisgrowingwell · 09/12/2018 22:32

Am I thinking that you think it was a scam by the seller therefore why should he keep your money?

Prisonbreak · 09/12/2018 22:32

This reads as
I bought a ticket to an event. Despite a small hiccup I attended the event. Can I get a refund?

No you can’t

hooveringhamabeads · 09/12/2018 22:34

That’s a good idea motherofdragons, I think I would actually feel bad about getting the money back as I did manage to get it. But it seems unfair that the seller gets £50 for not selling a valid ticket!

Huntawaymama · 09/12/2018 22:35

You got in and saw the event you wanted to so no you shouldn't get your money back

Blankscreen · 09/12/2018 22:35

So you now want the money back even though you got in?

As someone else said the venue missed out not you.

Autumnsunrise · 09/12/2018 22:36

Yes you should get a refund. You didn't get what you paid for. You did get in on goodwill but that's no thanks to the seller or site.
Hopefully the site will know if he's pulled this trick before.

hooveringhamabeads · 09/12/2018 22:36

Yes that’s how I feel about it veg. At least if nothing else, it’s been reported to the site now so hopefully he’ll be banned from selling on there again, I wouldn’t want him to do it to anybody else if it was deliberate.

CrispbuttyNo1 · 09/12/2018 22:37

Don’t be ridiculous. You got in. Of course you shouldn’t get a refund.

MarthaArthur · 09/12/2018 22:37

Of course you should get your money back! Its irrelevant that the security people let you in on their discression. They could have easily have turned you away. Thats got nothing to do with you buying a dud ticket by a possoble scammer for £50.

MereDintofPandiculation · 09/12/2018 22:38

If he was planning to scam you, why would he bother to contact you after the event to see if you got in OK? Or do you think he was using you as a test, and if you got in OK, then he'd be OK scamming a few other people?

hooveringhamabeads · 09/12/2018 22:39

Ha a split of responses here!

It would have been a fucking disaster if we hadn’t got in, dd’s Anxiety was through the roof and there’s no way she’d have gone in without me. Which would have been a waste of money for their 2 tickets, hotel and train fares (it ended up being very expensive!).

OP posts:
hooveringhamabeads · 09/12/2018 22:40

The seller didn’t contact me, it was an automatic email from the site I bought the tickets from asking if everything had gone ok.

OP posts:
hooveringhamabeads · 09/12/2018 22:41

Once you’ve reported a problem, then you and the seller are able to contact each other the directly (through the site).

arethereanyleftatall · 09/12/2018 22:42

If the seller could somehow get the £50 to the venue, then everyone's square.
You're already equal.
Seller has gained £50
Venue has lost £50

Elphie54 · 09/12/2018 22:44

No you should t get your money back. Reselling tickets on sites like that are usually against the terms of the ticket as well as the venue. In some places those site are actually illegal because of that.

Just let it go.

MissLadyM · 09/12/2018 22:46

You sound very greedy. You got in.

MarthaArthur · 09/12/2018 22:46

The venue hasnt lost out at all. They sold a ticket. The ticket is then being resold. In no way has the venue lost out because they were paid in the first place. Yes you should get your money back. Just because you were let in on goodwill doesnt excuse the fact you were sold an incorrect ticket.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 09/12/2018 22:52

You can't ask for a refund after you got in.

If you'd got turned away; you could have; but you paid money to get access and you did.

If you hadn't had a ticket that looked valid; you wouldn't have got in. So the £50 still got you access.

Was it an event where selling tickets is allowed?

arethereanyleftatall · 09/12/2018 22:55

Martha - the venue has (possibly) lost out. It sold one ticket. Which was (possibly) used twice.

Pachyderm1 · 09/12/2018 22:56

Why should you get your money back when you still got into the event?
