... what subjects would you revise?

I am going on a well-known TV quiz show. I’m an ridiculously excited. I’ve been really depressed lately and am on maternity leave and this has really cheered me up.

However, I’ve just realised that I should probably revise some shit... Filming is in less than a week and I don’t want to embarrass myself but it’s lookimg increasingly likely!

If you had 5 days until you were quizzed on a wide range of general knowledge what subjects would you concentrate.

Where I’m reasonable:

Monarchs
American TV
Science
Literature

I’m going to try current affairs and politics, history, geography but they’re such wide ranging subjects - which bits would you concentrate on?

I can do all Kings and Queens from Henry IV so will try to go back to Saxon/Danish ones before I go on.

@UrsulaPandress

Can you ask her for some tips?

Omg is it the chase! Please tell us when you are on. I love the chase.

If they ask about prime ministers, the answer is usually Winston Churchill, if they ask about a Spanish painter, it's usually Picasso. Dahli if they are throwing a curveball. Football if you don't know Manchester United is always worth a punt! Haha also Mary queen of Scots comes up as an answer a lot.

I know nothing about Kings/queens reigns and American politics so that's where I would swot up.

Oysterbabe · 08/12/2018 20:25

Random royal family member is usually Princess Ann.

sobeyondthehills · 08/12/2018 20:40

I think there is only so much you can do with the questions, however a few strategy for you

If you are first, go for the low offer, unless its negative, never go negative
If you are last go for the high offer, especially if everyone else has been caught.

Middle 2 doesn't matter what you go with, unless its a negative. Sean in my opinion is the best one, so you don't want him.

And have a plan for the final chase with the others if you can. I have seen some of the episodes where someone was so buzzer happy they kept passing.

Good luck :)

MrsT4 · 08/12/2018 20:43

Oh no if it's Sean go high! I'd go high against him, he's the one that goes wrong most often. I watched an episode today from a couple days ago where he got 3 questions wrong on one round and they got 9 Pushbacks on the final chase.

I think Ann is the best one. I'd poop my pants from her.

Merryoldgoat · 08/12/2018 20:55

Thank you all - I’ll deffo try to get a strategy for the last round - hope I get there!!

Please please come back and update us.

UrsulaPandress · 08/12/2018 21:04

I’ll see her Monday, at the Pub Quiz, and will ask.

Merryoldgoat · 08/12/2018 21:12

I love The Chase!!!

I think The Beast and The Dark Destroyer are the ones who mess up the most in the Final Chase so I hope you get one of those...

Topics I would revise:

Rivers and Oceans.

Where countries are in relation to each other (as in what countries border each other).

Famous sporting matches/games.

Words pertaining to certain organs in the body (may lead to lucky guesses in medical questions).

Continents of origin for various animals.

How many feet/cm/inches/yards/miles/km etc etc are equivalent to each other. Random questions always come up asking what distance 1’295 yards is equivalent to...

Bababoo13 · 08/12/2018 21:19

If In doubt the answer is rudyard Kipling 😂

happyclutterchucker · 08/12/2018 21:30

Capital cities (esp those of C America, minor European ones and south east Asia)
Islands
Cast lists of random British sitcoms
All the James Bond film titles, ditto Beatrix Potter books
British Olympic gold medal winners
Counties, concentrate on Scotland, Wales and NI
US states

Merryoldgoat · 08/12/2018 21:34

This is amazing stuff guys! I’m writing a list to start cramming.

OP posts:
QueenofmyPrinces · 08/12/2018 21:39

Populations of countries or capital cities, that comes up a lot.

And annual rainfall of countries etc

Craft1905 · 08/12/2018 21:39

And there's always a bit of Greek mythology!!

I'm useless at that, it's definitely my Achilles elbow.

HenSolo · 08/12/2018 21:55

I’ve been on The Chase!

I thought I had good knowledge but got caught quickly. Also was only 4 weeks after giving birth and my nipples were leaking while filming 😅

I bizarrely had two questions about weights and measures which would never think to revise. Also in the cash builder round listen to the questions carefully because even if you think it’s something you know nothing about often there will be a clue in the question. He started the question about cricket or golf or whatever it was and my mind switched off and I blurted out a random country but when I watched it back I heard him mention the words ‘european’ and ‘orange’ and lo, the answer was the Netherlands. D’oh!

Good luck!

HenSolo · 08/12/2018 22:09

@merry do it! I went middle but wish I’d gone high then at least would have gone out in a blaze of glory!! 😁😁

Letthenamesbegin · 08/12/2018 22:10

Hi merry - I went on that show (great fun)... I revised my myths, royals etc... none of which came up (but did make it back)

AnonymousName · 08/12/2018 22:12

Ooh, when did you apply? Just wondering how long the whole process takes... Best of luck and let us know when it's airing!

Merryoldgoat · 08/12/2018 22:29

It was surprisingly quick - I applied in early August and they called towards the end of the month and did a phone interview. At the end they asked me to audition which I did in late Sept (there were earlier slots but didn’t suit me).

I was called early Nov to check availability and then was given a recording date.

The audition was good fun so I’m hoping the day is too.

Ambernectarine · 08/12/2018 23:17

Oh I'm so jealous (I have applied) and so pleased for you.

I went on a TV game show last year - Countdown. Very different format of course, but what I will say is 'try not to let the nerves get to you'. I won my first two games, but fainted during my third and, understandably, lost. I hadn't been able to sleep or eat in the run up and, under the lights, I just fell apart. I did well enough, but I know I didn't do myself justice, so do keep your energy up if you can.

It's the weirdest thing but, in the studio, you totally forget there's an audience; you're just totally focussed on the task at hand. There is a studio audience for Countdown, but I don't think that's the case for the show you're on, so that should make it easier to forget.

I think the show you're on is actually trickier than mine, in the sense that I knew what I was facing, whereas there are way more variables on yours, so don't get too hung up on winning - it's such a rarity on that show. Instead, feel proud that you put yourself out there and were chosen. That's an achievement in itself.

Very best of luck OP - do report back!
