I am approaching my mid 40s and wondering if I should be changing what I take. Have had multivitamins for as long as I can remember and added iron after being anemic following dd1. Recently added in calcium supplements after a stint on MyFitnessPal uncovered I was seriously lacking in it in my diet. Can I ask your rough age & what you take! Ty

43 I take a high strength multi vit. Fish oil for my skin and high strength 1000mg vitamin c for my immune system.
Haven't had a cold for 4 years.

cowfacemonkey · 07/12/2018 21:22

I've just started taking magnesium and B complex but that was more do with trying to combat peri menopausal symptoms and a sudden onset of awful anxiety! It's been a month and I do actually feel a bit better thank god

cowfacemonkey · 07/12/2018 21:23

oh I'm 42 by the way

Purplefrogshoes · 07/12/2018 21:27

I take vit d3 2400iui as my orthopaedic surgeon told me I should but that’s it. I am 42 and I do have hip and knee issues

WelcomeToGreenvale · 07/12/2018 21:30

I take a general multivitamin, 500mg vitamin C, and a vitamin K supplement after a serious bruising incident a couple of months ago.

I intended to be taking a multivit+minerals as I know I don't get enough iron, but the multivit I have now is a chewable sweetie one and I hate the taste/smell of normal ones Blush

FaithInfinity · 07/12/2018 21:31

I’m 37, I take omega 3 (helps my poor short term memory and dry skin), vitamin D (I was deficient for a while and felt dreadful), a multivitamin and then magnesium at night (helps with my PMS symptoms and helps me sleep).

80sMum · 07/12/2018 21:42

I take various supplements from the middle of September until the end of April. In the summer, I don't take any.

I'm currently taking these daily.
Multivitamins for over-50s

St John's Wort

Omega 3 with antioxidants

Calcium & Magnesium

Babdoc · 07/12/2018 21:45

None, because I eat a healthy diet.
Although living as far north as I do, I could probably make a reasonable case for taking vit D during the winter months.

underneaththeash · 07/12/2018 21:47

Like Babdoc we have a healthy balanced diet, so don't take anything except Vit D in the winter months. (I'm 43)

MrsPatmore · 07/12/2018 22:02

Early 50's. High strength Vit D, COD liver oil and vit C. Eat and drink too much though.

stubbornstains · 07/12/2018 22:07

I too was of the opinion that you didn't need any supplements if you ate a healthy, varied, balanced diet (I'm pescatarian, but eat loads of eggs, green leafy vegetables etc). So imagine my surprise when I went to the doctor with fatigue, hair loss and perimenopausal symptoms to discover that I was iron deficient, and pretty low in magnesium , too. So, yes, I'm taking iron and magnesium now .

stubbornstains · 07/12/2018 22:10

OP, you could get a blood test, to see if you're deficient in anything? Given that you were anaemic, I think it would be worthwhile to see if your iron levels are OK now.

Hollipopsmum · 07/12/2018 22:14

Thanks for the replies. Those of you who only take supplements in winter why is that? Vitamin D or more fresh fruit/ vegetables or something else? And also (excuse my ignorance) what does magnesium do?

OP posts:
redsummershoes · 07/12/2018 22:14

1000iu vitamin d3 and 375mg magnesium.
both recommended by dr after I had 2 broken bones in one year.
my calcium intake is good, so don't need it.

BellatrixLeStrangest · 07/12/2018 22:18

I take iron and vitamin D, I also have a magnesium spray. I got diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and quite frankly I cannot be arsed having it so I take these supplements to prevent the symptoms. And honestly I feel great on them!
Magnesium helps with so many different things from aches and pains, headaches to memory loss. It's a massive thing that nobody can actually diagnose as having a deficiency as we store it in our bones. However a lot more people are deficient in it than first thought.

BellatrixLeStrangest · 07/12/2018 22:18

Oh and I'm 32

tor8181 · 07/12/2018 22:21

im 37 on st johns wart, bassetts multi vitamins and pre conception tablets as im ttc

adoggymum · 07/12/2018 22:22

Maybe try the Wellwoman ones? They have quite a lot in them and cover all the bases! I've used them previously but they're a bit expensive.

I now use a bog standard supermarket brand multi vit and take 2 a day.

MiniMum97 · 07/12/2018 22:24

I take so many supplements it's ridiculous. I have a chronic health condition though.

Vit d with k2
Magnesium malate
B complex
Lots of iron plus dessicated liver tablets
Vitamin c
Fish oil
Psyllium husks
Selenium

DomesticAnarchist · 07/12/2018 22:34

Last week there was another article in New Scientist discussing supplements.

For people without a diagnosed deficiency eating a reasonable western diet taking supplements was associated with an increased risk of death from all causes. The exceptions were a vitamin D supplement for most people, particularly darker skinned in northern latitudes and under 5s, and iron for young/menstruating women who may be anaemic.

Ditch the supplements unless on the advice of a (proper) doctor.

Shenanagins · 07/12/2018 22:39

I take vit d, live in Scotland so can’t get it naturally in winter.

Popc0rn · 07/12/2018 22:56

@tor8181 does your bassets multivitamin have vitamin A in it? I'm planning on ttc next year and have been advised by my friend who is a midwife to stop taking my general multivitamin because it has vitamin A in it and apparently too much can be harmful when you're pregnant.

stubbornstains · 08/12/2018 11:18

Is that causation or correlation though, domestic anarchist? As in, perhaps people who already feel unwell are more likely to take supplements?

romany4 · 08/12/2018 11:32

I'm 46.
I take vitamin D. Love in a very wet, grey part of Yorkshire.
High strength probiotics as I have IBS. Haven't had a stomach bug in over 10 years even when everyone else is ill.
Also take iron supplement as I'm anaemic.
I eat loads of veg and plenty of calcium too and get maybe one cold every 2 years

DisplayPurposesOnly · 08/12/2018 11:36

If you're already having a multi vitamin every day, why do you want to take more? You sound like you are looking for a problem to fix.

I'm early 50s taking iron (which comes with vit C) and folic acid (which comes with vit D) following a routine blood test at the GP's which showed my levels were low. The vit C helps with the iron absorption and, as I'm a sun-avoiding pale person in the North, the vit D is probably a good idea.

I don't feel any different for taking them.
