I am approaching my mid 40s and wondering if I should be changing what I take. Have had multivitamins for as long as I can remember and added iron after being anemic following dd1. Recently added in calcium supplements after a stint on MyFitnessPal uncovered I was seriously lacking in it in my diet. Can I ask your rough age & what you take! Ty

But why would you take anything, without getting a generic blood test first, to see if if you are deficient in a specific thing?, if you start adding calcium to your diet in the form of vitamins and you have enough already, you can add stress to your kidneys, for example. Why take iron if you don't need it? There is always a trade off. Get it checked properly.

I recently discussed this with my GP. She recommended nothing other than Vit D which I take during the winter months.

For all the rest I eat food.

It's impossible to get adequate nutrients from a balanced diet these days.
Even organic fruit and veg is sprayed with chemicals.
Unless you grow your own. Our food is not what it was 30years ago due to mass farming.

Normally none

When recovering from injuries (tendon problems being most common) I take turmeric and collagen in a little drink

  1. I don't take anything. If you have a varied diet and no additional health issues, you really don't need to. You will be wasting you money as they will be just be peed away in your urine. Vitamin D is the only one I would consider taking, but I do spend a lot of time outdoors in the summer months, so probably OK. Never had my vitamin levels checked though, but then I am never ill either so never at the doctors to do so.

Yes, you may want to have your vitamin D regularly checked and work with your doctor on supplements and dosages. In addition, as we age, CoQ10 in the body decreases. You may want to look into supplements that decline with age.

Vitamin D
Biotin

I bought the biotin as my nails were just so brittle. Have noticed a huge difference in both those and the thickness of my hair. I've read very hit and miss reviews but it works for me.

Vit D in the winter (when I remember), but I also try to spend at least 15-30 minutes outside everyday. For everything else I take food and exercise.

D3 in winter and 300mg of magnesium daily. I feel so much better for it. A friend mentioned some of the problems with a Mg deficient diet (over farming of soils has reduced our natural sources of magnesium) I had nearly all the symptoms.

nicoala1 · 12/12/2018 20:16

Magnesium Taurate for heart palpitations.
Vid D October to March
Aldi cheapo multivitamin fizzy tabs every day. They don't have vit D or Mag Taurate in them.

The multi vit is probably not necessary, but nice to have the insurance, since you'd have to be absolutely scrupulous about the sources and amounts and food groups and all the rest of it to get enough from food I think, just my opinion. Anyway all the vitz in the multi tab are water soluble, so if not required are excreted anyway.
