To not want a jacket from the 1990s? Who's BU?

Just that really. MIL is a hoarder and has still kept most of DHs stuff from his childhood. She bought round a leather jacket that he wore in 1999 when he was 9 years old, we're both 28 and have a DS who's 6, DH and MIL insist we keep it til DS can fit it. She's also a smoker, and smokes in her house so anything she brings round reeks of smoke. I don't want it, AIBU? I don't mind toys, but clothes really? From the 90s?

leather is still a popular look.

For 9 year olds??

Veganfortheanimals · 07/12/2018 12:23

Oh god...my kids will be on here in 10 yrs saying the same about me.ive kept everything for when they have kids...

YeahCorvid · 07/12/2018 12:25

You're pathetic. Accept it or not but stop pearl clutching and freaking out about "binning".

I bet it's cool. Grow up

diddl · 07/12/2018 12:26

"It can still be put in the washing machine!"

I didn't know that.

I was thinking that if it smells as bad as Op says then a wah/wipe of the outside won't do much good I wouldn't have thought.

Lweji · 07/12/2018 12:26

We need a photo of said jacket.

adaline · 07/12/2018 12:27

For 9 year olds??

Well, a quick look on H&M kids for boys aged 8-14 shows that the leather look is still popular.

The first two jackets on there are designed to look like leather!

BlueJava · 07/12/2018 12:27

Try selling it - vintage 90's leather jacket, I'm sure someone will want it. Put the money in the DS's piggy bank :)

IwantedtobeEmmaPeel · 07/12/2018 12:28

Just give a wipe over & hang it outside to air (if it ever stops raining) and that should get rid of the worst of the smoke smell, then either ebay or donate to charity. Job done.

BertrandRussell · 07/12/2018 12:28

If it’s a nice leather jacket then keep it. Why wouldn’t you? If it isn’t, then say no thank you.

Oh, and kids really enjoy things like reading their parents’ old school reports!

missperegrinespeculiar · 07/12/2018 12:31

well, I really like vintage clothes, and often hunt for them for the kids, sure, not all of them work, but you are behaving like the very idea is crazy, I think you are exaggerating

If you don't like it, or cannot clean it, don't use it, but I don't think your MIL is unreasonable to give it at all

Mrscog · 07/12/2018 12:31

I don't think there's anything wrong with clothes just because they're old, but if I couldn't get rid of the cigarette smell I wouldn't want it.

Why not see if it can be cleaned then make a decision?

Jux · 07/12/2018 12:33

My MIL gave me dh's reins from his toddlerhood, he was 46! They were nice reins, leather. But very used, the leather was cracking and falling apart - MIL said I could mend them.

I put them in the chest of drawers where dh kept all his clothes from his late teens. Haven't seen them since, so I assume that they're now in binbags in the loft as I finally managed to persuade him toempty those drawers so they could actually be used by dd about 8 years ago - only took me 12 years to get that bloody thing emptied!

OutPinked · 07/12/2018 12:35

Give it away or bin it, I do it with loads of MIL’s ‘gifts’.

KatherinaMinola · 07/12/2018 12:36

I don't know any parent who would want to put their child in decade old clothing

Really? I would, and have, if it's in good condition - smart outfits that have been passed along from cousin to cousin after being worn a few times. If you have three or more children you're almost certainly recycling a few high quality items for a decade or more.

KatherinaMinola · 07/12/2018 12:37

But to the OP - YANBU not to take it, if you don't want it.

tryinganewname · 07/12/2018 12:39

Not sure I've seen any 9 year old trotting around in leather jackets, regardless of if it's a classic shape or not.

Bin it. My MIL is a hoarder too, she's obsessed with giving me teddies for DD at the moment.

ChocolateStash · 07/12/2018 12:42

I still see a local woman wearing a shell tracksuit in our area. I reckon she must have saved a fortune by reusing her 80's/90's clothes. She gets the roller perms too. Grin

Notinterested19 · 07/12/2018 12:45

Goodness, the smell of stale smoke hit me as soon as i pulled it out of the bag Envy

I do, frequently. Have loved putting my DSs (2 & 4) in considerably older clothing worn by DH and DBIL in the panic 1970s - retro, cool, and sustainable. It's got to be better than chucking things out. Been in MIL's dusty attic for 40 years but if it survives the wash, on it goes - I'm very grateful for the hand-me-downs & love how nostalgic DH gets for his childhood when they come out.

THAT SAID: If OP doesn't want it, she doesn't have to take it - but if it's 3 years before DS is going to wear it, it's got plenty of time to air the smoke out!

notacooldad · 07/12/2018 12:45

MIL is having a bit of a clear out. She phoned to see if we'd like DH's school reports from all through Primary School. Er, no, thanks, don't want your old hoarded clutter

Fuck me, MIL"s can't win! It was decent she asked. The mum of my son's girlfriend chucked all her old reports away last year and she was heartbroken and wished mum had asked if she wanted them.

Can't do right for doing wrong eh?

tillytrotter1 · 07/12/2018 12:47

I have a jacket from the 90s that I still wear, no problem there.

DontCallMeCharlotte · 07/12/2018 12:48

Is it a recently promoted detective constable type of 90s leather jacket? A bit blouson? Or should that be bleurghson? In which case, "bin".

Or is it a Michael Hutchence biker type of 90s leather jacket? In which case, get it cleaned and save it for when DS stars in a Year 4 production of Grease.

BruegeITheEIder · 07/12/2018 12:49

Why does that age of the clothing matter?

BertrandRussell · 07/12/2018 12:50

Both of mine would have been outraged if anyone had binned vintage clothes before letting them have a look from the age of about 10- ds wore grandpa's trilby for ages.

Cranky17 · 07/12/2018 12:51

have a jacket from the 90s that I still wear, no problem there. but do you wear your mums old one from the 50’s
