To wonder why people are so gullible

Idontknowwhyinfrench · 05/12/2018 20:39

On here and on fb. People are so quick to respond to sob stories without giving the slightest heed to the fact that they are almost certainly bullshit.

I know people will say that truth can be stranger than fiction and that events in their own lives have seemed unbelievable but come on. Some of the stuff in here at the moment is akin to the dog with ham in his face!

Ha, cross post.
Yes, that's hamgirl.

Baking101 · 05/12/2018 20:55

I think it's worse when people give money to people looking for holidays or whatever. Like that mum recently who did a fundraiser to take her kids to disneyland and some idiot gave her £2000. Dunno why they are gullible enough to hand over their money.

greendale17 · 05/12/2018 20:59

Some people are just really thick. Theres no point in trying to understand them.

You can't use the word gullible any more. They've taken it out of the Oxford English dictionary a few years ago. You might need to get your title edited OP.

That dog is hysterical. We call our cat Ham Face or the Ham Burglar because she is a greedy little thief. The ham would last two seconds before she horsed it down. (We love her very much, in case anyone thinks we are mean owners - she has many nicer names.)

Passmethecrisps · 05/12/2018 21:15

I saw something shared which was a photo of a wee girl obviously in hospital. She was smiling at the camera and looked healthy. She was hooked up to some equipment though.

Anyway, apparently this poor child was waiting on a kidney transplant and she would only get one if she got so many likes and shares. And someone on my friend list actually shared it. I cannot begin to imagine the thought process. So the organ bank place has a kidney but by some weird, black mirror type scenario only the kid with most likes and shares gets it.

That was shared by a colleague of mine who is kind and well educated. I simply don’t get it

DaphneFanshaw · 05/12/2018 21:17

It’s because there is nout but shit on the telly.
A CF thread is better than Eastenders.
I think people get sucked in because they have nothing better to do.
The other trolls, the emotional vampire sort are a different kettle of fish.

WinterfellWench · 05/12/2018 21:17

OMG I nearly PMSL at the dog/ham pic!

colditz · 05/12/2018 21:18

Because they're stupid. Just because someone has been taught to read and write properly doesn't mean they aren't stupid.

JennyBlueWren · 05/12/2018 21:19

When friends and relatives share hoaxes and scams I always flag it up to them with a link to a news article or hoax slayer about it. However sometimes I get a response such as "can't be too careful" or "yeah but..."

PeapodBurgundy · 05/12/2018 21:26

I'm pretty very gullible (thought for years that mobile phones flashed so deaf people could tell they were ringing, just because DM's now ex husband told me so and I just didn't think about/question it), and even I'm not taken in by ham dog. I'm hoping the original picture was demonstrating how well trained the dog is for not scoffing it.

Stickmanslittleleaf · 05/12/2018 21:27

The worst are those 'My 2 children are missing! They're missing! Please and bring my 2 children home, if anyone sees them call 07555534555. My babies!' Or similar with adult woman involved. Sharing, sharing, sharing. Not a single thought that if this was real the number should be that of the police, that if 2 kids were missing in your area there might be some media interest, that perhaps there's a dodgy motive. Nope. I'll share that!

LilQueenie · 05/12/2018 21:28

the ones that annoy me are the no one likes me enough to like this post hit like if you do. Then you get loads of people doing it believing it to be real when its on a page with tons of similar ones. They only do it to feel popular. poor sad gits.

PerfectionistProcrastinator · 05/12/2018 21:29

Oh yes, people sharing without even questioning things really bothers me too!

There’s one on Facebook that I’ve seen shared a few times. It says if you’re forced to take money out at an atm by a thief, if you enter your pin backwards it will immediately alert the local police and the machine will start taking photos. People actually believe and share this sort of nonsense! My pin is the same forwards as it is backwards.

LagerthaTheShieldMaiden · 05/12/2018 21:29

The backwards pin number one always amuses me. I think of those poor people with palindrome pin numbers. They must be forever summoning the police to cash points Grin

AlpacaLypse · 05/12/2018 21:30

I've reached the point where Snopes is now permanently at the top of the screen. Ready for whatever bit of idiocy SIL2 or Cousin XX posts to FB next.

LagerthaTheShieldMaiden · 05/12/2018 21:30

Damn, cross post!

BathshebaKnickerStickers · 05/12/2018 21:32

My dog is missing having run off 30 mins ago in Aberdeen

“Sharing Newquay”.....

Or the opposite

(Dated 2012)

My dog has run off in Tasmania

“Sharing Crieff, Perthshire 05/12/18)”

DannyWallace · 05/12/2018 21:33

Ooh all of these annoy me so much.
One of my friends shared hamdog and it actually had a warning/upsetting image warning over it 😂😂.

The other thing that annoys me is when people share things (like lost animals) but don't actually read the post to see when it was written/what the outcome is!
Because yes, thank you for sharing, Sharon. I'm sure that the cat that went missing 6 years ago in California is now in Dundee....

DannyWallace · 05/12/2018 21:34

Hahaha @BathshebaKnickerStickers cross posted 😂

Crinkle77 · 05/12/2018 21:39

A colleague recently shared a post saying that a hospital in Manchester had run out of O negative blood and they were wanting people to donate. I said it was a hoax and she saud she trusted the source it was a friend of hers and she worked in the NHS. I can't believe that someone who actually works in the nhs can spread that rubbish.
