To think my baby is warm enough ?

ILoveHumanity · 05/12/2018 11:58

I get lots of comments From strangers that My 9 months baby isnt dressed warmly. Even from friends and family.

But baby is easy to sweat from his head, if I put on as many layers as most do.. always has warm and his hands and nose are warm.

I use hand and feet and nose to find out if he is cold. And head sweating to find out if he is too hot.

AIBU? Right now I’m out and it’s lightly raining and he wears a long sleeve vest, then hooded thick jumper with hood on his head , he is wearing socks and foot muff covers his body. I’m in London and it’s 12 degrees. His hands are boiling.

Someone random just told me, “you need to cover him up”.

I just find baby is very uncomfortable in too many layers.

Sounds fine to me. Babies do differ.

wineandcheeseplease · 05/12/2018 12:03

No coat?

KeysHairbandNotepad · 05/12/2018 12:04

YANBU, some babies are warmer than others. My son is a very warm baby too.

Magpiefeather · 05/12/2018 12:04

If he is not cold then you’re doing fine!

Popskipiekin · 05/12/2018 12:05

I wouldn’t go by extremities to find out if he is cold; aren’t you advised that babies’ extremities do vary more than most adults - best to check his chest/back? But if he’s fine, he’s fine, and carry on!

Cherries101 · 05/12/2018 12:06

As he isn’t moving or indoors he will get colder more quickly in a pushchair in the open especially as it’s wet. I personally would have put a coat on him.

PatchworkElmer · 05/12/2018 12:07

I use DS’s back to check if he’s ok. What your baby has on sounds fine to me though!!

KismetHardie · 05/12/2018 12:07

Assuming he's also under a rain over that sounds fine. My baby gets a pink nose when he's cold so it's pretty obvious!

HopefullyAnonymous · 05/12/2018 12:08

I wouldn’t be out today without a coat so wouldn’t expect a baby to be, either.

LaCerbiatta · 05/12/2018 12:09

Don't babies need an additional layer to us? If I was outside and not moving I would be freezing if I was dressed like that.

NameChangeOhNameChange1 · 05/12/2018 12:10

Back of the neck to check baby's temperature.

I think a stranger telling you how to dress your baby can fuck off!

KeysHairbandNotepad · 05/12/2018 12:10

I had a woman aproach me outside the school gates last year. She grabbed my son's hand and told me that he was too cold. He was in a sling and had a vest ,sleepsuit with scratch mitts , a thin jacket and hat. I told her not to touch my baby and she scuttered away. Cheeky cow.

Excited101 · 05/12/2018 12:11

No trousers??

Needallthesleep · 05/12/2018 12:11

I get constantly told by my MIL that I am under dressing my 10 month old. Today (in London) she is wearing a short sleeve vest, a jumper, a snowsuit, and a pair of warm booties (she is in a sling).

Lonecatwithkitten · 05/12/2018 12:13

Back of neck to check temperature is most reliable place.
Immobility requires one extra layer so sat in pushchair needs an extra layer compared to the adult walking.

Snowydaysaregreat · 05/12/2018 12:13

My 8m okdv is in long sleeve vest, trousers and jumper. Didn't bother with a t shirt too as she'll have her snowsuit on when we go out in a bit. Plus her cosy toes in the pram. And of course hat and mits.

chasingcloudsforever · 05/12/2018 12:13

Only you know what's best for your child but I have always sworn by the one more layer than Me rule 🙂

SoyDora · 05/12/2018 12:16

Surely he’d cry if he was cold?

Oneinthegrave · 05/12/2018 12:16

i got that the baby is only wearing a vest, jumper hat and socks? If thats the case YABVU

AlmostAlwyn · 05/12/2018 12:18

Ugh, I hate these comments. Like you haven't thought about it! My baby didn't have a coat till he was almost a year and a half (spring born).

When he was little, that's basically how my MIL greeted us every time - "aww isn't he cold?"

NO HE'S NOT COLD

reallyanotherone · 05/12/2018 12:18

Depends on the baby. Mine always ran hot and yes, i quite often got strangers telling be they should be wearing a hat/coat/whatever.

I started by “one layer more” but they cried and cried until i took a layer off. In the end i had it down to a fine art with blankets- i’d dress them in normal indoor clothes, then use blankets instead of coats/more layers. That way i could whip blankets on and off depending on whether we were outside/on a bus/in a shop/house. Otherwise I was forever dressing and undressing them.

They were fairly infamous at school for being the children who never wore coats. But people quickly learned they simply weren’t cold. They always had coats, gloves, hats etc with them.

I hate being overdressed too. Even in this weather I generally don’t wear a coat unless I’m inactive outside for a long time.

BiscuitDrama · 05/12/2018 12:18

The baby is wearing a foot muff too.

icannotremember · 05/12/2018 12:19

When ds3 was a baby there was a clutch of mothers at the older dc's school who hounded me every time they saw me about him not wearing enough. He was always wearing enough, plus I generally wore him in a wrap sling and if anything he was on the warm side! usually I would just smile and say "he's fine", but a few times I got really annoyed. This was my 3rd baby, I was in no danger of being talked into anything, but the advice people were giving was basically to overheat my baby and that can be dangerous.

Mind you, when ds1 was a baby a locum doctor told me off for not having him wear a hat at all times, even when inside, even when sleeping in his cot. He was born early in the summer of 2006. Anyone remember the summer of 2006? It was fucking hot. I may have sent slightly irate feedback re that doctor.

tryinganewname · 05/12/2018 12:20

You need to check his chest/back for temperature - not their head or hands. General rule of thumb is one layer more than us, so if you have top and coat on, that's was he should have plus a vest. You also say no cover - do you mean no rain cover? He will be wet and cold if so.

I don't always go overboard with DD, especially as she's mostly in and out of the car so it's a faff putting her in coats etc. But she always has layers and I have spares on me. She always has a hat on too as I'm prone to a lot of ear infections and I'm terrified she'll get the same.

gillyweed · 05/12/2018 12:21

You should check babies back or chest for temp - not hands, feet or nose.

I don't think you've put enough clothes on. He defo needs a coat and probably a blanket too - sat still in a buggy he is exerting no energy (ie warning his body up) and will be getting cold much more easily.

If lots of people are saying it too you, chances are yabu.
