To ask how you keep your car windscreen from misting up

My heaters seem to be so slow at demisting. I'll wipe and it still doesn't help.

So how do you do yours 🤔

Aircon on, vents set to screen.

Bigonesmallone3 · 04/12/2018 10:38

Best not to wipe and let the blowers do it..

BertramKibbler · 04/12/2018 10:39

I try not to breathe

MamMamMam · 04/12/2018 10:40

Put some cat litter in a sock. Apparently it draws the moisture to it. Dh uses this when he has damp fishing gear in the car

sonlypuppyfat · 04/12/2018 10:41

I've filled an old sock with salt and it's working brilliantly

ZeroFuchsGiven · 04/12/2018 10:42
You're, Welcome :)
UpstartCrow · 04/12/2018 10:43

Wood or paper based cat litter, or a £1 shop dehumidifier will work but you have to take it out before you drive.
Also the silicon water retaining granules you get for compost, which you can reuse.

MargoLovebutter · 04/12/2018 10:44

I heard that if you wiped the inside of the screen with WD40 that was supposed to prevent it - but I've never actually tried it.

Watching with interest as mine was so bad this morning.

badlydrawnperson · 04/12/2018 10:45

As above use the max demist setting - aircon dehumidifies.

Wiping it will only ever make it worse in my experience.

I also had one of those dehumidifier bags.

Also check you don't have a window open somewhere, and check pollen filter isn't waterlogged

thecatsthecats · 04/12/2018 10:47

I use RainX to ensure that the front screen remains clear in my car.

It doesn't remove moisture, just prevents it misting. Means I can set off immediately on a regular day, because my car was an absolute pig for taking up to 20m to demist.

Of course, now I'm getting a new car, it's one of my priorities!

DGRossetti · 04/12/2018 10:50

Wiping half a cut potato over the screen has a similar effect to RainX, if you're tight.

NoThankyouHun · 04/12/2018 10:52

Cold aircon clears your screen faster than hot. You're welcome. (After you've deiced if it's cold outside)

Nat6999 · 04/12/2018 10:59

Buy a Ford with a heated front screen, other than that I put my aircon on with the front screen button on, shut all of the vents on the dashboard to get maximum air flow to the windscreen, set off as soon as you can see enough to as the screen chemists quicker when moving.

BarbaraofSevillle · 04/12/2018 11:09

I have a routine for defrosting my car.

Set engine going and blowers on full blast directed towards the screen, full heat, aircon on, rear heater that also does the mirrors on.

Quick spray of deicer onto front screen and quickly scrape over side windows.

Once ice on front windscreen has started to soften, scrape off - alternate from sides to front for a minute or two until nearly done - you need to get the ice off the front windscreen as this slows down the demisting process.

Have blue roll in the car to wipe over inside of windscreen - don't make the mistake of using anything that's been used on the outside of the windscreen as it will be filthy and covered in deicer so will make the inside dirty and smeary too.

Final up and down of all the side windows to wipe off any residual ice on the sides and I'm good to go. It still takes about 5 minutes to defrost my car to clear windows, but I'm in a fairly elevated rural area so we have hard frosts here. This morning was quite a bad one.

Need to find the windscreen covers that I bought and never used.

PurpleCrazyHorse · 04/12/2018 11:16

Air con on.

trinitybleu · 04/12/2018 11:21

Send OH out in his jammies to turn engine on about 20 mins before I leave 😁

PoshPenny · 04/12/2018 11:33

I use a tea towel to wipe it off

randomsabreuse · 04/12/2018 11:38

Karcher window vac, or Ford with heated front screen!

TheVortex · 04/12/2018 11:41

You reach a point when there is lots of moisture in the air inside the car that needs removing. Blasting with air just evaporates it then it's circular process.

Cat litter in sock is a good idea or sometimes I squigee it off the inside window and soak it up and remove then polish up with decent cloth. Sorts it out until we have another spate of wet weather with people getting in and out with wet coats etc.

Biker47 · 04/12/2018 11:43

Run your air con constantly, mine is never switched off.

HariboLecter · 04/12/2018 11:44

Make sure all vents are closed at night.

Firesuit · 04/12/2018 11:45

Since I started driving cars with climate control this has been a non-issue for me, the computer that controls the air-con knows exactly what to do. I never have misty windows for more than a minute from starting the engine.

To be honest, I can't remember how much of a problem it was before, the fact that I park in a garage overnight may be helping as well.

Firesuit · 04/12/2018 11:48

Maybe it is as simple as just running air con all the time, which I know climate control does do to control humidity. My last car without climate control had manual air con, and I ignored the owner manual advice to run it all the time as I couldn't get my head around the concept of having the air con on even when there was snow on the ground.

Toughtips · 04/12/2018 11:50

Thanks for the tips. My cars too old for aircon I'm afraid. Will try the sock idea.
