or Is it rude to put decorations on somebody's tree?

Have come into work this morning and our cleaner has added a bunch of decorations to our trees which has slightly annoyed me. She's very kind and generous and I'm not going to say anything to upset her but I wondered if my reaction was 'normal'?

FWIW to avoid drip feeding... we started putting it up on saturday but inbetween customers so it wasn't finished. We were going for a very specific colour co-ordination and the decorations added don't tie in with it. The decorations are all edible - chocolate and candy canes and we are supposed to be promoting healthy eating so it clashes with a 'core value' of the organisation. But I do have a stinking cold and am feeling quite cranky so that may have affected my initial reaction...

Yadbu what a mean and ungrateful person you are.

Topseyt · 03/12/2018 13:55

I am glad you now accept that you were being unreasonable.

I can be quite a bah humbug about Christmas, but I would still take this as a kind gesture.

Christmas trees are meant to be a bit of fun. Gaudy as possible, colourful etc. There is no rule that says they have to be colour coordinated. Chocolates and candy canes are a lovely gesture to be enjoyed by many people. Loosen up a bit.

lazyarse123 · 03/12/2018 13:55

Sorry i take that back after your update. Happy christmas.

cheesywotnots · 03/12/2018 14:07

It's the work tree now, when you donate something it shouldn't come with conditions attached, the staff bought decorations and lights in, your housekeeper bought in treats, everyone got involved which is what Christmas is all about. Do you serve cake or biscuits with your coffee mornings, are all your staff in tip top health, it wasn't your tree, it was your parents and ready for the skip.

headinhands · 03/12/2018 14:13

So you think the cleaner has been offensively impolite, because she put chocolates on the tree? The mind boggles.

RomanyRoots · 03/12/2018 14:16

Doesn't she work there too?

mostdays · 03/12/2018 14:17

Lighten up, it's meant to be about fun, not perfect colour schemes. And sugary treats can be part of a healthy diet- it's about balance and moderation, not total abstinence.

HauntedPencil · 03/12/2018 14:23

I've read your update OP sounds like the cleaner wanted to treat the kids but wasn't aware of the healthy eating stuff (it's much the same in a lot of places now)

I doubt they'll last long without being scoffed then you can replace them with your decorations when it looks a bit bare.

Christmas tree chocolate is especially nice.

Yura · 03/12/2018 14:44

maybe remove the note for children to eat them? and move them to higher up branches? our local homeless shelter asks for chocolate decorations etc just before christmas - you could always bring them there when you close for christmas (if they are still wrapped and in good condition obviously).

I thought you were being a cock about your brand values but I think you had a valid concern there now you’ve clarified.

It’s done though. I think it would be a really good idea to include the cleaning (and other maintenance staff) in the decoration next year.

What a brilliant AIBU, @AlpacaPicnic!

AIBU? Yes, and here is why. Oh, hadn't thought of that, fair enough. Thank you for reacting like a real person, not an AIBU bot. Xmas Smile

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 03/12/2018 16:54

Oooh... chocolate tree decorations, I wonder where she got them from, cos I can't find any at all this year.

user1484424013 · 03/12/2018 18:15

🤣🤣🤣🤣 my husband has cancer and more than likely his last Christmas. Happy that's all you have on your plate. Your cleaner deserves better than you bitching on here

mostdays · 03/12/2018 19:23

@user1484424013 I am so, so sorry for what you're going through and I wish you and your husband well, but really, that's a very unfair thing to say to the op.

I hope your Christmas is both lovely and not the last one with your husband Flowers

AlpacaPicnic · 03/12/2018 19:35

I'm sorry to hear about your husband User, and I too hope that you have a lovely and peaceful Christmas together.
