To have two Christmas trees?

ThumpityThumpThump · 03/12/2018 10:09

Usually we have one tree in our main living space. When it was just DH and I it was all greens/reds/golds nicely arranged decorations. We now have DC and of course the tree is now made up of their homemade decorations and some disney ones etc that they have chosen.

Don't get me wrong, i love this, its special to see their decorations from when they were small and its all nice and sentimental.

BUT

i miss my nice co-ordinated tree too.

we have moved house and now have a lovely big hallway. I want to get a second tree for the hallway which i can do all co-ordinated to match the hall and then have our normal family on in the family room.

DH says this is OTT and showy.

I just want my nice co-ordinated tree AND my sentimental covered in kids 'art' tree!

AIBU to get a second tree?!

We have 6 trees, one 8ft in the biggest room, 6ft in the dining room, and each child has their own miniature one in their room to decorate as they wish, which saves the 'good tree for me!

ThumpityThumpThump · 03/12/2018 10:16

thats a lot of trees! i'm sure my DC would love that idea!

We have four!

Hedgehoginthefog · 03/12/2018 10:20

Our tree came with a free mini tree this year so we have a tree in the living room, the mini one in the hall and a fake tree on the landing. Each is decorated with a different coordinated scheme.

fussychica · 03/12/2018 10:20

We have two as we like a tree in the dining room/conservatory as that's where we will be eating Christmas dinner. That one is more basic. No young DCs though so they are both for meSmile

ThumpityThumpThump · 03/12/2018 10:21

so its seems i'm not totally mad for thinking 'normal' people do this, DH thinks its only celebs/footballers wives that have multiple trees!

I have my own tree in our grown-up living room and then a family tree in the big room/kitchen. The kids put what they want on the big tree, I put my carefully collected, colour-coordinated bits and bobs from around the world on mine. Last year, to avoid confusion, I put all my stuff in one small box and everything else in a big box. OH and the kids decorated their tree on Saturday - guess which box they used? Howls of distress when I removed all the hand-blown vintage glass baubles and little handmade scandi things.

longwayoff · 03/12/2018 10:28

Have as many as you want. It's Christmas. Enjoy itSmile

ThumpityThumpThump · 03/12/2018 10:29

backinthebox time for some large keep out labels on your box!!

Right, i'm now thinking maybe i need a smaller one for DH and my 'grown up' lounge too!!

and maybe a small one for the playroom.....

4 trees.....DH will do his nut!!

My parents did this when we were kids—in the dining room where we would be eating Christmas dinner they had the “proper” tree with all the coordinated decorations and a colour scheme. And in the family room we had the “kids” tree with the bright clashing colours and the art projects Grin I think it’s a good idea becasue that way the kids can have fun decorating the tree but you can also have what you want.

altiara · 03/12/2018 10:46

I have 3, a big tree in the living room with all of the homemade decorations, small one in the hallway and a colourful tinsel tree on the landing. Each has their own decorations.

Gizlotsmum · 03/12/2018 10:47

Kids do the hallway tree ( and their rooms) I do living room tree and decorations. That way they enjoy it without me rearranging everything. They get better each year and it is more evenly decorated now without my assistance

Ski4130 · 03/12/2018 10:50

We have two trees - one in the family room, one in the sitting room. The one in the family room is an homage to every decoration our kids have ever seen and fallen in love with (we’ve got unicorns, llamas, a surfing Santa and even an avocado nestling amongst the other pink/fluffy/sequinned/glittery/football related decs on that tree!)

The tree upstairs is full of glass decs, and decs that I’ve collected over the years, and whilst it’s not an Insta worthy tree, it’s more tasteful than the one that the kids are in charge of Smile see attached - it truly is a hodge podge tree, but they love it.

Have two trees, it brings festive harmony to our house - no longer do I spend hours sitting on my hands, itching to tidy the kids’ tree up, or make it look more symmetrical (ds2 and dd are big fans of the ‘more is more’ and ‘chuck everything you’ve got at the tree and hope it sticks’ school of tree decoration)

To have two Christmas trees?
AutumnMadness · 03/12/2018 10:51

Nah, for me the tree has to be singular. It's the focus of the fest and the source of magic. It can only be one. And I just don't get the "coordinated" trees. The tree is part of your family celebration, it should reflect your family as opposed to some kind of commercial sanitised perfection. Does your life have a 'colour scheme'? I bet not. I love unpacking the decorations and remembering where I how we got each one, including the ones that the children made while in nursery. I don't care if they are not colour coordinated. They are my memories.

happyasasandboy · 03/12/2018 10:52

We have 6 trees, and will have a seventh (of sorts) this year;

Big tree in lounge
Big tree in dining room
Small tree on landing/front upstairs window
Mini trees in 3 kids rooms

This year we will have a felt tree on the kitchen wall too :)

You can never have too many Christmas trees Grin

ThumpityThumpThump · 03/12/2018 10:53

i'm busy on amazon now looking for trees!

Feeling much more reassured that this is the right thing!

and as PPs have said, as much as i love the kids artwork and decorating skills it does make me itch to sort it out into a more orderly fashion!!

And i do now really want 4......

maybe just 3 for this year.....

oooh feeling excited and christmassy!!

We've had 2 trees for a long time. One in the lounge and the other in the dinning room.
Not real ones, though, can't be doing with all the pine needles.Grin

ThumpityThumpThump · 03/12/2018 10:55

autumn actually i am a bit colour co-ordinated - most of my clothes are in my two fave colours paired with navy or black. and the hallway is painted my fave colour and furnished to compliment this. It's my favourite room!!

BayTrees · 03/12/2018 10:57

So pleased I'm not the only one! We have a long sitting room with 3 windows on the outside wall: 2 outer bays and a central square window with a sofa in front of it. I NEED 2 trees, one in each bay so it balances. And they need to colour co-ordinated. It's a big room so I've been trying to buy bigger decorations that don't get lost. But then I've got lots left over because they're the wrong colouring so I need a tree in the dining room where they're perfect. Then there's the little tree I used for the classroom when I was teaching which is just right by the hall window with the little decorations on. Our cat was new and timid last Christmas. This year she is not. I'm not sure how well the trees will survive. I accept that it I ever have children I will have to sacrifice my lovely co ordinate scheme but as I don't, I can please my self. I might graciously let DH loose on one (and tweak it when he's out as he tends to whack it up rather than place pieces in a considered and balanced way)
I am so sad.
Also, I need more lights for the new tree. At least the tree was free... we don't talk about the price of baubles.

AperolSprizting · 03/12/2018 10:58

We have 2 normally, one in living room coordinated then one in the dining room with a mish mash of vintage and old favourites. I have a 4 month old now tho so really wondering if I cba this yr!! The thought of having 6 to decorate makes me feel ill, ha! But for your reasons no I don’t think yabu, not is it showy.

Blanchedupetitpois · 03/12/2018 10:59

YANBU, my mum has 5 in her house Grin

Ksjourney · 03/12/2018 11:01

We have two trees the main tree which has all the coordinated, sentimental, old and breakable decorations and a smaller (child friendly tree - in case it falls) which has all the home made art work and DC child friendly chosen decorations. The smaller tree is constantly being updated and decorations moved around.
