To think shops should be open longer Sundays

We aren't a religious country, churches are empty and it would be great to do the weekly shop at 6-7pm on a Sunday when the children are in bed.

Dragging them around busy shops during the day would give me more family time.

Scotland manages just fine, people up there find it bizzare the government forces shops here to close.

Still waiting for the op to answer why she can't do her shopping after putting the kids to bed on a Saturday,or Friday, or Thursday etc etc.

HelenaDove · 04/12/2018 00:08

@MonsterTequila 17 years ago i had the choice of sex chatline work or workfare.

so i certainly think ppl can be forced into retail.

And care work too Cases like Winterbourne View dont just happen by osmosis

sanpelle · 04/12/2018 00:09

YANBU. A lot of us have to work 24/7 and don’t get the pleasure of finishing early on Sunday’s or any other day for that matter. My DH’s bank has 2 days off a week where we live, like people don’t need to do banking every dayHmm I experienced the brunt of it with a newborn and struggling to get what I need. Where I live there’s no open shops for miles after 4 on a Sunday. We still need to eat, buy necessities etc. Our lives don’t just stop because of a certain real or not entity! As for ‘needing a break’: Surgeons, doctors etc. do tougher work than retail and certainly deserve a break. Imagine the carnage if hospitals just started closing on a Sunday. The world still needs to turn whether someone needs to rest their feet or not, that’s how it works. If you don’t like it then get an easier job

HelenaDove · 04/12/2018 00:09

oh hang on it was nearly 18 years ago now Time flies.

HelenaDove · 04/12/2018 00:11

"Surgeons, doctors etc. do tougher work than retail and certainly deserve a break"

No one is saying they dont so cut the emotional blackmail

And if i recall correctly some British retail workers got badly hurt on the first UK Black Friday.

HelenaDove · 04/12/2018 00:13

sanpelle Why cant your DH get the shopping during his two days off.

sanpelle · 04/12/2018 00:20

I mean just food stores in this situation. Clothes shops I couldn’t care less about and it would just be strange mooching round one at 2am. Just to add before I get flamed for ‘insulting retail workers’, I’ve worked in both fast food and shop floors. They were the easiest jobs I’ve ever done and I’d love to go back if it was fulfilling enough. Yes you’re on your feet all day but you get used to it quickly if you’re fit and healthy. Co-op is amazing as it opens to 11pm on Sunday’s near my DM’s and the Booze Express/Premier stores open late too. It should start to spread to others soon as there’s a sharp decline in profits for most and they need the extra cash

sanpelle · 04/12/2018 00:25

He doesn’t work at the bank😂😂😂😂 I said his bank. Not the bank he works at. What if someone accidentally knocks their last box of formula all over the floor while holding their screaming, hungry baby at 11pm on a Sunday? It’s incredibly inconvienent in this decade. This country needs to move forward with the rest of the world

EmeraldShamrock · 04/12/2018 00:37

Or people can be more prepared. Mothers did survive before.
We used to have to walk 2 miles to the village in the 80's to get shopping, in a city. We survived.
I think surgeons and doctors get paid and generally respected for the work they do, unlike the average retail worker.
Those who work in retail while in uni is not the same as working 40 hours a week without the finances to change things.

HelenaDove · 04/12/2018 00:40

BOTH my parents worked in the 1960s 70s 80s 90s 2000s + DM didnt retire till Christmas 2015. DF is still working.

HelenaDove · 04/12/2018 00:42

"I think surgeons and doctors get paid and generally respected for the work they do, unlike the average retail worker"

Surgeons and doctors get paid for being on call. Retail workers dont even though they ARE on call because they are being expected to keep themselves available in case they are needed.

TheDarkPassenger · 04/12/2018 00:42

It’s very odd that people assume retail workers only ever get a Sunday night off. Hotels are open 24/7, do you think the staff work 24/7? Confused
It’s what ROTAs were designed for

AleFailTrail · 04/12/2018 00:56

My Dad’s a cabbie, nights Thursday to Sunday. On sundays everywhere would be shut before he was awake making it a total non day.

So I started working sundays so I had Monday off instead. More time to do interesting stuff with him!

LilyMarie · 04/12/2018 01:20

Yanbu op, I think all businesses should be open for at least 18 hours every single day of the week to - offices included. So inconvenient that so many businesses completely shut down over the weekend and after 5pm on weekdays.
Our society doesn't need more family time it needs more money spending time!

CoughLaughFart · 04/12/2018 01:25

If I see one more person saying ‘Shop online instead’ I’ll go on a killing spree. Who do you think picks and packs your online orders? Delivers them? Manages the website? Monitors stock levels? I’ll give you a clue - it ain’t magic pixies. It’s real people, often working very unsociable hours.

By all means argue for better conditions and more flexibility for retail workers - but don’t assume online shopping is some ideal solution where nobody works after 6pm.

VitaminSea · 04/12/2018 01:29

I work in retail and have to work weekends - unless I use holiday days. I get two days off in the week, never together, and 1 late night.

I hate it, it's all I can currently do. All my family and friends work in various roles that have weekends off (or a few shift workers that get the odd weekend off) and when anything is arranged, it's always, "sorry, I'm working." Sunday is the odd day I might get somewhere in time to enjoy a family evening roast or a party on a bank holiday (although, I'll be working the next day!)

I really don't think you can suggest all retail workers want 'more shifts' (especially when they are part time students) I'm contracted to 40 hours so I cannot speak for those on 0 or less though.

palooka47 · 04/12/2018 01:52

YANBU. We don't care when we go to the pub on a Sunday night and their staff are working. Ditto restaurants, bars, NHS workers , emergency workers (trust me it isn't an emergency half the time!) etc etc. Not all shop workers have families-some of them might want to work.

HelenaDove · 04/12/2018 02:03

"Not all shop workers have families-some of them might want to work"

Assumptions like these are what leads to childless or childfree people being expected to do all the unsocial shifts.

palooka47 · 04/12/2018 02:07

Probably, but some with famiies may want to work too-maybe they'd prefer it if they got a Fri night or Saturday day off. We can't make assumptions about everyone. This thread title pops up every now and again-as the OP says Scotland is fine with it. Other workers don't get the day off on Sunday because they're religious or childfree or have children or whatever their circumstances..

Bunbunbunny · 04/12/2018 02:28

Work life balance in England is a bit rubbish. Do we really need shops open all day Sunday? I enjoy the fact we switch off a bit on a Sunday and it should be encouraged. With online shopping you can easily get what you want during the week I don't see that as an issue. Maybe we should see Sunday as a rest bite for mental health & a wellbeing day.

1forAll74 · 04/12/2018 02:31

It's fine as it is I think, Sunday hours,10am-4.30pm here. Having said that, the Co-op supermarket and the Tesco Express, quite near to where I live, are open until 10 pm every night. including Sundays.

selepele · 04/12/2018 03:47

agree but it should be split into shift work on sundays think saturday same so everyone can enjoy their weekend

Marble2017 · 04/12/2018 04:06

weetabixandshreddies I wonder how many saying they want longer opening hours work in the jobs you listed!! I bet they would kick up a fuss if they had to work Sundays!!

Bluerussian · 04/12/2018 04:30

Co-op usually open until 10pm on a Sunday and don't be snobbish about Co-op, they are good shops nowadays, sell practically everything needed and more.

Deadbudgie · 04/12/2018 04:58

Personally I’d love to go back to the old system of only a few shops opening on Sunday. Ie small shops selling perishables. Maybe if we had a day a week where people were stopped from their must buy more stuff addictions it nights a. Help small shops and b. Show people they can have a day without having to buy things. Every other day many supermarkets are open 24 hours. If you really can’t find time in those 6 days to get your stuff you need to slow down your life
