To think shops should be open longer Sundays

We aren't a religious country, churches are empty and it would be great to do the weekly shop at 6-7pm on a Sunday when the children are in bed.

Dragging them around busy shops during the day would give me more family time.

Scotland manages just fine, people up there find it bizzare the government forces shops here to close.

YANBU but others will probably disagree.

OliviaStabler · 03/12/2018 07:09

YABU. It is bad enough they are open on Sundays as it is. Give retail workers some kind of a break from ridiculously long hours.

Lazypuppy · 03/12/2018 07:10

Considering supermarkets are open 24hrs the other 6 days a week YABU.

Do your food shop one night in the week once kids are asleep.

JollyAndBright · 03/12/2018 07:11

YANBU.

It’s a ridiculous, outdated rule and should be thrown out.

MongerTruffle · 03/12/2018 07:12

YANBU

Marmite27 · 03/12/2018 07:12

Churches aren’t all empty. Communion takes a good 20 minutes at ours.

Pity the poor retail workers who are continually asked to do more and more Sad

rosesarered9 · 03/12/2018 07:13

Retail employees don't work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

SweetheartNeckline · 03/12/2018 07:13

Closing at 4pm gives retail workers a tiny bit of family time. Round here supermarkets are open until 10pm every other night. There's plenty of time to shop (or do it online for delivery / click and collect - appreciate there are areas that don't offer this.)

ShatnersBassoon · 03/12/2018 07:13

A few hours break from the chance to get the big shop done isn't stopping any of us leading full and happy lives. Go another night, or do an online order to arrive on Sunday evening if that's your favourite time to unpack shopping.

Habba · 03/12/2018 07:14

All this virtue signalling for retail workers, many want longer hours and if you want to shop on Mondays many have to work when the store is closed anyway.

I wish they'd shut.

People working in retail on 0 hour contracts for terrible pay working most weekends so people can shop 24/7 is just shit in my opinion.

Businesses are suffering due to high business rates and rents, it unlikely even large chains can afford to extend hours. I think it would force more companies into debt.

Retail needs a massive shake up to compete with the online market but I don't know if this is the way.

European12345 · 03/12/2018 07:15

2 words online orders : no need to drag your children around supermarkets

And as others have said they’re opened 24-6 so why not do it when children are in bed on a Wednesday ?

Retail workers deserve family time as well

lostfrequencies · 03/12/2018 07:16

YANBU.

ElideLochan · 03/12/2018 07:16

Why don't you leave your children at home.with whoever they would be with when they would be asleep at 6-7? Whizz around without them?

Habba · 03/12/2018 07:16

Why is it ok to do an online shop and make the delivery drivers and pickers work Sundays but not other workers Hmm

OP posts:
Mookie81 · 03/12/2018 07:16

If they opened longer there would be more hours for more retail workers, meaning more people employed, not necessarily the same workers doing more hours Hmm.

WipsGlitter · 03/12/2018 07:19

Come to Norther Ireland. It's even more shit - shops don't open until 1pm on a Sunday.

AllIWantForChristmasIsTomHardy · 03/12/2018 07:19

YABU you could go out and shop any other of the other 6 nights your kids are in bed.
Think of the minimum wage 0 hour contract workers who might like to put their kids to bed in a Sunday night as they aren't working.

Here's a thought, would YOU work on a Sunday night?

AllIWantForChristmasIsTomHardy · 03/12/2018 07:21

I'm sure most agreeing with you don't work retail hours.

JockTamsonsBairns · 03/12/2018 07:21

Pity the poor retail workers who are continually asked to do more and more

See, that doesn't reflect my experience at all. My student Ds works in Asda, and says there just aren't enough shifts for everyone to get the hours they want. Also, I have a couple of friends who work in supermarkets on evenings and weekends who say they'd prefer the store to be open on Sunday evening as it would create an extra shift to choose from.
I don't think Scottish retail staff are under more pressure than their English counterparts to "work more and more" ?

incognito0 · 03/12/2018 07:21

It doesn't cost a company to have a delivery driver using their own transportation to do deliveries on a Sunday.

I've worked in retail 10+ years and Sundays in some areas just don't have the footfall even with 11-4 hours. Some days not even making enough to cover staffs wages.

RebelWitchFace · 03/12/2018 07:23

Why don't you shop on a Saturday night once the kids are in bed?
Or do the food shop online?

Ifailed · 03/12/2018 07:23

OP, as you've enough energy to post, I assume you have somehow managed to buy some food, so you've demonstrated that the current opening hours are sufficient.

BakedBeans47 · 03/12/2018 07:23

YANBU. English Sunday working hours are ridiculous. Staff wouldn’t be forced to work Sundays as there is legislation in place whereby they can opt out. As you say up here in Scotland we seem to have coped without the country going to hell in a handcart.

As for retail workers “deserving a break” there are plenty of other people who have to work Sundays, why do people only about shop workers?

PurpleAndTurquoise · 03/12/2018 07:24

Supply and demand OP.
