AIBU to have been an idiot to eat this in the first place?

So about 6pm today, I ate 'fish, chips & mushy peas' ready meal.

About 7pm, I needed my inhaler (not terribly unusual, I'm allergic to just about everything)

About 7.30pm I noticed a nettle type rash on my arms. Looked at my tummy and it was like a measles type rash all over me; legs, arms, torso.

So I rang my Mum (as one does) and she was asking me all about different cleaning products etc., and I was like no, I bleached the floors this morning, but did not come into contact with the bleach. Then it struck me, the fucking fish. I had actually read the ingredients before buying it, to see whether it was cod/plaice/whiting etc. But the ingredients only state 'white fish'.

I was hungry, so ate it. I live far from shops and don't drive, and it was the only thing in freezer.

Now my brother is allergic to shellfish. I have never eaten shellfish in my life, so don't know whether I'm allergic or not, but it surely has to be the culprit? WTF is 'white fish'?? And why the fuck was I so dumb as to fucking eat it!!?

I've taken piriton, the asthmatic symptoms have eased, but the rash is glaring.

It had to be the 'white fish' right?

No advice on white fish but I'm allergic to chicken, nuts and peas so know how u feel when u have reactions.

White fish is things like cod I think!

Hope ur feeling a little better xx

Fawnsett · 03/12/2018 02:25

Not an idiot. White fish refers to a certain fish family like cod, haddock, pollock, etc. It's not a shellfish.
But you can develop new reactions any time actually. Can you call 111 just to check what they suggest?

Elphie54 · 03/12/2018 02:39

You can develop new reactions at any time and they can be severe. The more you expose yourself to an allergen, the worse they get. A first reaction is not likely to be anaphylactic in nature but it can be.

If you believe you are having an allergic reaction (that has already caused breathing difficulty) you need to get yourself to a&e for proper treatment.

Zulor · 03/12/2018 02:44

I called 111, they sent an ambulance, I was assessed, bp was low, one of the guys mentioned' she's slightly tachycardic?' but I refused to go to A&E. They gave me a nebulisor while in the ambulance and my breathing is fine now - no tongue swelling or tightening of the throat or anything else that they asked me.

I've eaten cod/plaice etc. before and never had a reaction. In fact I've never had a reaction that involved a rash all over me.

The only thing I can think of is that it had to have been whatever this 'white fish' was and possibly mixed up with shellfish, which I may be allergic to, but don't know as I've never eaten any!

You should have gone to a&e.

Low blood pressure and an elevated heart rate are signs of an anaphylactic reaction. As the nebulozer wears off, you may feel bad again. You really need to be in a controlled environment where you can be observed in case you get worse.

plaidlife · 03/12/2018 02:52

White fish is just that really, fish that is white, it isn't shellfish.

Augusta2012 · 03/12/2018 02:54

It’s probably more likely to be something in the batter. Are you allergic to egg or milk?

Zulor · 03/12/2018 02:55

These are pics of the rash

How scary. Hope you're ok now.

This

Zulor · 03/12/2018 02:57

Ok, well pics didn't upload.
I know what white fish is. I just think that this fish may have been contaminated with shellfish.
My breathing is fine now. Just the blooming rash all over my body.

Was there no way of getting to a&e without the ambulance?

Ambulance is for 999 emergency calls.

Not a rash. I think you should have gone to a&e absolutely. But by emergency ambulance?? No.

brizzledrizzle · 03/12/2018 02:58

You really should have gone to a&e, like others have said the nebuliser and antihistamine will wear off it you still have the rash.

Elphie54 · 03/12/2018 02:59

I don’t think anything people are saying is sinking in.

Anaphylaxis is DANGEROUS and can KILL you very quickly. You need observation from medical professionals in case you get worse.

I say this as a paramedic who has seen anaphylaxis kill someone who had been talking several minutes before they stopped breathing. It was heart breaking.

brizzledrizzle · 03/12/2018 03:00

If 111 sent an ambulance then op is hardly responsible if it was unnecessary, maybe it wasn't but that's an issue with 111 and their scripts.

AjasLipstick · 03/12/2018 03:00

I hope it clears up soon! As an interesting note, DH and I once ordered fish and chips in a chip shop here in Oz and were served Gummy Shark!

It was bloody lovely.

coppercolouredtop · 03/12/2018 03:01

I don't think people realise how stretched The ambulance service is. While they are prattling about with your rash someone is likely dying from heart attack because the one of few ambulances available is stuck with your rash....

Zulor · 03/12/2018 03:02

I didn't call an ambulance. I called 111. They sent a blooming ambulance.

OP posts:
coppercolouredtop · 03/12/2018 03:04

So you should have bloody well gone then on their advice. You tied an ambulance up that wasn't really required.

We often wait hours for one. Bonkers. There triage service isn't accurate.

brizzledrizzle · 03/12/2018 03:05

Op could have died from her rash while an ambulance was with a heart attack patient if it is an anaphylactic reaction. Op you should get off mumsnet and go to a&e like the paramedics said.

Zulor · 03/12/2018 03:05

basically I talked through the symptoms with the 111 operator and he said well we need to send an ambulance. I was like 'I really don't need an ambulance' and he was like 'well, I can cancel the ambulance for you, but it's your responsibility'.
So the ambulance came, assessed and I didn't take up any more of their time.

OP posts:
coppercolouredtop · 03/12/2018 03:08

So take responsibility and go to a&e off your own back and not because ambulance took you.

Zulor · 03/12/2018 03:08

It's not anaphylactic shock. I'm still breathing

I just don't know what it is to be honest. The only thing I can think of is an allergy as I was immunised as a child against measles and german measles (which this rash looks like).

OP posts:
Elphie54 · 03/12/2018 03:09

They assessed and said you should go......

I am all for people making their own medical choices but you are being ridiculous.

For the previous posters-anaphylaxis IS a medical emergency.

Zulor · 03/12/2018 03:10

I'm fine! Jesus. That's not why I posted. I posted basically because I ate something that I really didn't know the content of.
The rash is not itchy btw.
