AIBU to have been an idiot to eat this in the first place?

So about 6pm today, I ate 'fish, chips & mushy peas' ready meal.

About 7pm, I needed my inhaler (not terribly unusual, I'm allergic to just about everything)

About 7.30pm I noticed a nettle type rash on my arms. Looked at my tummy and it was like a measles type rash all over me; legs, arms, torso.

So I rang my Mum (as one does) and she was asking me all about different cleaning products etc., and I was like no, I bleached the floors this morning, but did not come into contact with the bleach. Then it struck me, the fucking fish. I had actually read the ingredients before buying it, to see whether it was cod/plaice/whiting etc. But the ingredients only state 'white fish'.

I was hungry, so ate it. I live far from shops and don't drive, and it was the only thing in freezer.

Now my brother is allergic to shellfish. I have never eaten shellfish in my life, so don't know whether I'm allergic or not, but it surely has to be the culprit? WTF is 'white fish'?? And why the fuck was I so dumb as to fucking eat it!!?

I've taken piriton, the asthmatic symptoms have eased, but the rash is glaring.

It had to be the 'white fish' right?

White fish is any white fish e.g. cod, haddock, plaice, coley. Definitely shouldn't have shellfish in.

Thesmallthings · 03/12/2018 06:55

Copper her breathing was affected.

That warrants a ambulance and is not safe to drive her self.

Your little rant is very dangerous

Ok, i do think you was silly not to go to hospital, when the nebulizer wears off you could be back to not being able to breath right.

Please go to your gp and get tested. It could have been anything in that meal. The battery, the peas, the oil the chips where cooked in. And you need to find out what.

sansou · 03/12/2018 06:58

Why do you think it’s the white fish that you’re allergic to? It’s far more likely to be the batter or breadcrumbs which may contain traces of peanuts.

I am allergic to shellfish (only from my mid thirties strangely enough) but It’s only shellfish like prawns, crabs, lobsters, oysters, etc. I can still definitely eat all types of fish like cod and plaice including the battered, breadcrumbed frozen ones. I don’t have a nut allergy though.

Mayra1367 · 03/12/2018 07:00

The medics wanted to take you to hospital to get checked out , you refused their professional help but want the opinion of mn! 🙈

ladyflower23 · 03/12/2018 07:01

Can you contact the manufacturer and say you've had a serious allergic reaction after eating this product and can they provide you with a full list of everything that's in it?

Mummadeeze · 03/12/2018 07:04

That rash that comes on suddenly is a severe allergic reaction which can (not always obviously) pre-empt anaphylactic shock. I get that rash when I eat dairy or eggs. I have anti histamine tablets that are stronger than piriton (fexofenadine 180) and steroids on standby. I also have an epipen in case of emergencies. You need to go to your GP and get referred to an allergy clinic for more tests to establish what foods to avoid. Tell them exactly what you ate and they will test for all possibilities. Good luck.

Rockbird · 03/12/2018 07:08

Strange thread. The rights and wrongs of A&E aside, although if told you should go then you should have gone, why were you an idiot to eat it? You said you're not allergic to any food so why would you not eat it? You could say that about anything. But if you thought you'd react to it why did you have it in the first place?

brizzledrizzle · 03/12/2018 07:11

My daughter got this once, no idea what caused it but we got the fright of our lives as it was literally appearing on her body right before our eyes.

My eldest DD had a similar experience - 1 or 2 allergy hives to hundreds within a few minutes. It's terrifying. That ended up as a 999 call because they were in her mouth and on her lips as well as everywhere else. She hadn't, as far as we know, eaten anything she was allergic to.

CovenofMiLsfromHades · 03/12/2018 07:13

Hope you are feeling ok now OP.

I agree that you need further tests to work out what it was you reacted to. Its unlikely that the white fish would be contaminated with shellfish and if it is you should complain as this would be something that should be investigated and would be taken seriously. As you say many people are allergic to shellfish and some avoid it for religious reasons so it must be clearly stated on packaging.

It does seem more likely you reacted to one of the stated ingredients in the meal and you need to know exactly what it was so you can avoid it in future.

Nonameslob · 03/12/2018 07:16

coppercolouredtop please don't suggest an ambulance isnt appropriate for someone who is possibly anaphylactic. That's very bad advice and you having given CPR before is completely irrelevant . A decision was made based on her symptoms and history (information you don't have), she didn't call 999. However, if someone is having symptoms of anaphylaxis then calling 999 is very much appropriate. Not everyone has an epipen, it could be a first time reaction.
While they are prattling about with your rash someone is likely dying from heart attack because the one of few ambulances available is stuck with your rash
It concerns me that you say you are an emergency worker and have a daughter with a peanut allergy yet consider an ambulance crew treating someone with possible anaphylaxis as "prattling about" with a rash. No one is lecturing you, it is a discussion forum.
However the OP should have followed the advice to go to hospital.

TwoGinScentedTears · 03/12/2018 07:24

Yy to pangasius being sold as white fish. Could have been that? Are you ok this morning op?

NicePieceOfPlaid · 03/12/2018 07:38

If people can't be arsed to read the whole thread the least they can do is read posts by the OP.

That way they could avoid making themselves look totally stupid, as can be seen here.

DonnaDarko · 03/12/2018 07:40

You weren't an idiot to eat the fish, but you are an idiot for not going to a&e. If you have difficulty breathing, always go to A&E. You don't know when if it will get worse.

Beamur · 03/12/2018 07:49

White fish can include Pangasius, which a lot of people are allergic to.
I'd contact your GP today OP and ask for some blood tests.

Quartz2208 · 03/12/2018 07:53

coppercolouredtop anaphylaxis absolutely needs an ambulance it can be deadly and can happen very quickly. 111 did the right thing

As for what caused it - it could be any number of things. You say you are not allergic to anything

ineedaholidaynow · 03/12/2018 07:56

OP what sort of things are you allergic to? You say that you are allergic to almost everything but then later say you are not allergic to foodstuffs.

olivertwistwantsmore · 03/12/2018 07:58

I posted basically because I ate something that I really didn't know the content of.

So how the hell do you expect posters on Mumsnet who haven't got your food packing in front of them to know what you ate?? FFS. You could have googled 'white fish'.

If ready meals contain shellfish, they will say so. If you're allergic to so many things, you should be more careful about what you eat.

And it's pretty pointless asking MN for health advice when you won't take paramedics' advice.

You sound belligerent.

RTT Quartz - OP said I'm allergic to just about everything

SoupDragon · 03/12/2018 07:58

Wasn't there an issue with Vietnamese River Cobbler also known as Pangasius being sold as "white fish" and even being illegally sold as cod and haddock?

I was also thinking that although I couldn't remember the name of the fish.

It's unlikely to be shellfish contamination, far more likely to be something else.

RTT Quartz - OP said I'm allergic to just about everything

She also said she is not allergic to any food that she knows of. Maybe RTT Wink

AjasLipstick · 03/12/2018 08:01

Soup Pangasius is a type of shark....in Oz, Shark is routinely sold as white fish.

Quartz2208 · 03/12/2018 08:03

Yes that is the confusing thing she is allergic to everything but no food stuff so the allergic reaction she got from the meal could be anyone of a number of things.

Agree though not sure how though two statements make sense

BlackeyedGruesome · 03/12/2018 08:05

and I am allergic to spam... reported

sportinguista · 03/12/2018 08:08

I would check it's not Basa as that has known contamination issues and has caused reactions in the past. I avoid anything labelled just 'white fish' as it tends to be cheap and tends to be Basa.

Basa are raised in countries with very high pollution levels, they are often fed unregulated hormones and as bottom feeders they often contain bacteria such as E coli as the rivers where they are raised also double up as the loo for lots of people.

I was warned about it by a fish merchant years ago who said he would never stock it, and he still doesn't. I'd just avoid anything stating just 'white fish' go for something that states the species and stick to ocean fish if you can. It's also possible the fish if from that part of the world is processed in a factory where seafood is as well.

ButchyRestingFace · 03/12/2018 08:08

You sound belligerent

Nah, you sound belligerent. OP sounds merely obtuse. Wink

Definitely not to blame for 111 sending an ambulance. But not getting into the ambulance is on you. Hopefully you’re now either much better or have taken yourself off to A&E to get checked over. Smile
