To redo my house from scratch because of the 'grey' fad?

DH and I just moved into a new(ish) house. Built in 2014 and the decor is very new and clean etc. Problem is everything, and I mean everything is grey. Grey walls, grey carpet, grey bathrooms and grey kitchen.

It's depressing. We have plans to move out of this house in about 5 years time but we're about to spend a couple thousand redoing everything. Carpets/walls/furniture.

Are we BU? Is the grey thing going to stick around for years and we've wasted money putting everything back to neutral?

If you’re renting I really wouldn’t be arsed at all since you mention plans to move out in a few years anyway.

If you have bought it then it’s probably a good investment to redecorate.

Aaaahfuck · 03/12/2018 09:33

Could you leave the grey floors and brighten up the rest?

StormcloakNord · 03/12/2018 10:00

I totally agree with everyone saying some grey can be good but honestly this house is top to bottom grey. Grey carpets, grey wallpaper with grey-tinged paint. Grey flooring in the kitchen with white high gloss cupboards and grey worktop, grey stripe going through the wardrobe doors and grey tiled from floor to ceiling bathrooms.

I'm actual drowning in grey 😂

Its not even different shades to make a bit artsy/nice. It's all the same drab light grey colour.

We own the house so yeah the thought of another 5 years of grey is too depressing! We're going to roll up and keep the carpets though as someone in the family might make use of them!

No opinion on the grey, but your nn is my favourite one I have seen on mn Grin

Down with the Thalmor!

Jitters22 · 03/12/2018 10:56

I’ve got a very colourful house, Moss green kichen, dusky pink sitting room, denim blue bathroom and mustard bedroom! But my hall and landing are a pale grey with dark grey woodwork and I absolutely love it.

Even if you love colour as much as I do, there is definitely a place for grey in any decorating scheme, just not everywhere.

Good luck OP. I’m sure you will find the right colour scheme to suit you.

TheViceOfReason · 03/12/2018 11:15

Grey can be nice, but being the current pinterest fad, it all gets a bit much.

But.... equally, each to their own and i'm sure there are plenty of people who wouldn't like my house decor choices!

The only thing that would put me off a house is a newly installed white gloss kitchen - criminal waste to rip it out and i really don't like them. Give me nice oak doors any day.

user187656748 · 03/12/2018 11:26

My house moves through from dark grey in the snug, very pale grey in the kitchen (but lifted with grey and white patterned wallpaper), through to white and mushroom in the dining room (light grey with pinky tones) and then a taupe colour in the living room. So it all flows and changes gradually from room to room. I've also used colours with warmer tones, even the dark grey is a warm dark grey (and is also offset by mustard and emerald green).

My floors are walnut (dark wood) and all woodwork ceilings etc are white. I think the grey carpets which seem to be on trend make houses look like offices. If you're going to change anything OP I would change the carpets.

Bootikin · 03/12/2018 11:29

Just paint the walls FGS. It is not difficult and doesn't cost much. MUCH less money than changing carpets. Once you've changed the wall colour (something with a bit of colour, not dreary cream either) and the window treatments, stand back and re-assess. It is ludicrous to not make the effort to paint it at least - if you're planning to sell in 2023 you'd have to repaint the walls that were painted in 2014 anyway so get your roller out ...

MulderitsmeX · 03/12/2018 11:32

I do have a beige house so can't really judge but the whole grey thing is not really my taste.

I would keep grey carpets though as that's a good "carpet" colour I think.

HexagonalBattenburg · 03/12/2018 12:21

I just don't like cream/brown toned neutrals and colour palettes so the grey craze really appeals to me!

Our bedroom is blue though and the kids' room is the shade of purple that only is fully described in terms of purpleness by the words "my 6 year old daughter chose it".

katekat383 · 03/12/2018 12:45

No you are not being unreasonable, OP. It seems too many bought into that “style” whole scale. I think with decor, it doesn’t do to be too slavish to anything, particularly a colour like that.

79andnotout · 03/12/2018 13:06

My house was top to bottom cream and magnolia when I moved in. It's taken me five years to change it all (and I have a lot of grey, black, dark brown, dark blue). It looks so much better (in my opinion). Will probably need a complete makeover if I wanted to sell it though. Each to their own!

katekat383 · 03/12/2018 13:31

A submarine interior - probably the engine room - is what the grey-all-over look resembles.

katekat383 · 03/12/2018 13:35

Anyone who follows a trend is certainly not being “edgy”.

Cthulwho · 03/12/2018 15:41

I chose grey carpets and dark kitchen tiles/worktops only 2 years ago for my new build and I'm already sick of it.

PumpkinKitty82 · 03/12/2018 16:14

Most of our rooms have varying shades of grey in them and I LOVE it .
I don’t care about “fads” I just find the colour is a great base to go with so many other brighter ones.
I’d take grey everything over whites or creams but if you’re not happy why ask if you should change it? It’s your house !

roundturnandtwohalfhitches · 03/12/2018 18:29

I was thinking the grey thing was just about over. It can be amazing but you have to have just the right shade of grey for the light you have- both natural and artificial. I've seen greys that look amazing at night but shite during the day and vice versa. It's a hard colour to actually get right. I'd change it if I didn't like it OP- a house is to be lived in and not just an investment though it's tempting not to start painting.

36degrees · 03/12/2018 18:37

I bought my first place in 2002 and had to have grey paint specially mixed. The mad craze for it has ruined my favourite colour. If sage is the next big thing I am going to be cross.

Blanchedupetitpois · 03/12/2018 18:59

@goldengoddess not Mrs Hinch altho her house is similar! Think it was called something like Montreaux Home? 99.9% of the photos are pure grey. It would be like living in pleasantville!

Summerlovin24 · 03/12/2018 19:16

I seriously don't know how people with kids decorate. I have 2 kids, a job and a hobby. What with cooking and pairing socks i CBA to decorate. So hats off to you

celticprincess · 03/12/2018 19:27

Well my house was all cream when we bought it 11 years ago. Old house with backing paper on the walls to get the smooth effect. Other than the grey and white kitchen. Grey below the dado and white above it. Fast forward to now and it’s still the same. I did paint the kids’ rooms when they were born - yellow in one and green and yellow in the other. The whole house is desperate but I just don’t have the cash. Ceilings are too high to try myself. I’ve basically used furniture and soft furnishings to inject colour but even they need changing now after 10 years.

Anyone got about £10-20k spare?? Lol. I actually hate spending money on my house. It’s not my forever house but I’m stuck with a negative equity mortgage and won’t move for a long time yet. I have put in a new kitchen and bathroom as they both hit crisis point.

aspoonfulofyourownmedicine · 03/12/2018 19:40

I love my 'grey house', it's not depressing at all. It's my individual taste and doesn't lack imagination, life or whatever....... my home is just that, mine. (My wardrobe is the same, black, greys and navys)

Change your colour scheme to suit you and your taste, not any 'trends'. I choose things that are to my taste, not other peoples

Lickedthespoon · 03/12/2018 19:47

StormcloakNord · 03/12/2018 20:12

Mrs Hinch has pish taste

Much prefer grey to 'neutral' what we used to call magnolia before that became a fashion faux pas
