To redo my house from scratch because of the 'grey' fad?

DH and I just moved into a new(ish) house. Built in 2014 and the decor is very new and clean etc. Problem is everything, and I mean everything is grey. Grey walls, grey carpet, grey bathrooms and grey kitchen.

It's depressing. We have plans to move out of this house in about 5 years time but we're about to spend a couple thousand redoing everything. Carpets/walls/furniture.

Are we BU? Is the grey thing going to stick around for years and we've wasted money putting everything back to neutral?

What colour palette @charlotte?

Huh, this is something I just don't understand - people choosing a property based on things that can be easily changed like wallpaper, paint colour or kitchen fronts.

Mummyoftwo91 · 02/12/2018 23:21

Yes to pp suggesting adding colour in with accessories, teal, mustard, dusky pink ect all look amazing with Grey

Allthewaves · 02/12/2018 23:25

I don't mind grey but have to say one room max. I love my grey sitting room but teamed it with striking blue and lime green. No way would I want the rest of my house grey. Grey in bathrooms just doesn't do it for me

WinterFellWench

Well I just love those photos I could happily live in that house!!

White woodwork is also a favourite of mine

You can add yellow or teal to a gray room to brighten in up
But at the end of the day we all have our own style and as long as we are happy in our own home that’s all that matters!
Some people love 50 shades of gray some don’t

Well I typed a long reply but it disappeared! In short, cream throughout and a pale taupe with a white pattern in the living room.

Ah the picture worked. The hall, dining room and landing are in a lighter version.

VisitorsEntrance · 02/12/2018 23:45

Is it worth it for 5 years?

If everything is new and clean I would live with it

You’d hate my house.

Why don't you look at some design books/pinterest/whatever and see what style you like and then try to do that by changing paint/adding furniture accessories etc.

This is what we did - we found a style/designer we loved and thought of that when we furnished. Our house is very very colourful -not pops of colour but a lot of non-matching colour and fabrics everywhere but our bathrooms and kitchen are pretty much grey and white - which works fine.

SheCameFromGreeceSheHadaThirst · 02/12/2018 23:58

I've been looking at houses on Rightmove lately and there are some where everything is grey, kitchen, floor, walls, sofa.....Bloody depressing!

It's like there's been a mass imagination bypass on Rightmove, isn't it? If it's not a tsunami of greige, it's glossy white kitchens, usually with pointless blue lights in the kick boards.

SheCameFromGreeceSheHadaThirst · 03/12/2018 00:00

Well, you must have spotted the colour when you bought it??

Yeah, but there's seeing something and thinking 'might not be too bad', then there's actually living with it day in, day out.

animallikeyou · 03/12/2018 00:01

I honestly don’t think I’d buy a house if every room was painted grey. It took me four coats of paint to get rid of the grey in my current kitchen.

Nightmare.

Touchmybum · 03/12/2018 00:03

Well it beats magnolia!!!!

Let your imagination run riot, be creative! I wouldn't waste money on changing things if your plan is to move in the medium term. Grey is a fabulous foundation for all shades of gorgeousness - yellow, orange, teal, fuschia, turquoise, red - you name it! Pattern, texture, lighting... furniture, curtains, cushions, pictures, rugs .. I think grey as a base colour is very calming, so long as it's not the same colour as the original plaster!!

So many ways you could invest your money in things you could bring with you, rather than on fixtures you will leave behind.

A bit of paint doesn't break the bank either.

Iloveautumnleaves · 03/12/2018 00:04

I as do bored with some people slating grey, it’s so tedious 🙄. I LOVE my house and it’s grey walls. It’s not boring. It’s not bland. It’s not like a prison. It’s certainly not depressing.

That aside. Anyone getting cream carpet & painting their home in bloody Timeless has not got a single leg to stand on calling others out on their choice of decor.

Seriously?! You couldn’t make it up 🤣😂🤣😂

tildaMa · 03/12/2018 00:04

@animallikeyou ever heard of primer?

Want2bSupermum · 03/12/2018 00:07

Sounds like you need a lighter colour on the walls and I would put some jewel coloured rugs down. Depending on what colour paint you go for. The contrast can be harsh so think about your artwork and furniture. Silver really brightens grey up and a coat with a translucent silver might be enough to brighten up the space and costs a lot less than painting a whole room because you don't have to bother with edging.

I don't mind the dove white colour or the lighter green greys but greige colours are depressing and only suitable for a very bright room. The navy trend is extremely annoying. Very few homes can pull off a navy room!!!

MrDonut · 03/12/2018 00:09

Gosh, I’m not sure cream carpets are a good idea. It would definitely put me off buying a house.

Want2bSupermum · 03/12/2018 00:10

Tilda Don't be so rude. Having worked a lot with paints sometimes it can take 3-4 coats of primer to get rid of a strong colour. I had it with a deep red wall thanks to decorating a la changing rooms. It took 4 coats of primer and 3 coats of regular paint to get it hidden. It was an absolute nightmare.

WinterfellWench · 03/12/2018 00:12

@touchmybum

Magnolia is a million times better than grubby, boring, drab grey.

Can't believe anyone would prefer grey to magnolia. Confused

I think some people must be colour blind!

WinterfellWench · 03/12/2018 00:13

And yeah, cream carpets! VOM! What normal sensible logical person would have cream carpets?

Ellie56 · 03/12/2018 00:14

Duluxe Timeless is what it says on the tin. We have had that one for a number of years.

Bouchie · 03/12/2018 00:17

I'm bored of grey but equally can't stand cream/magnolia/peach.
Make a few changes to what you like. in 5 years if selling you will need to repaint anyway. I would go for offwhite and the occasional feature wall.

Touchmybum · 03/12/2018 00:20

Au contraire my dear Winterfellwench, there is nothing more lacking in imagination than magnolia!

I come from a generation where magnolia was de rigueur; hence I can't stand it. There is nothing on this earth more bland than magnolia paint!

Thanks for your touching concern, but no, I am not colour blind, but I am excellent at colour matching.

Parker231 · 03/12/2018 00:21

We’ve just had a pale grey carpet fitted in our bedroom - it’s gorgeous. The room is huge with high ceilings, white walls, white furniture and white and grey bedding. Very restful.

Titsywoo · 03/12/2018 00:23

Grey is fine but people use it in every room and not just on the walls - soft furnishings, kitchens etc etc - and it looks awful. I assume it's down to lack of imagination.

I wish people would stop saying pop of colour, it makes me a bit stabby.
