Is a cheese pie a thing? With no other filling? Was it from a recipe?

Iltavilli · 02/12/2018 18:00

Why did you put the milk in? Do you have more pastry so you can start again (not using milk this time)?

Lwmommy · 02/12/2018 18:00

Surely.you need some egg in there to firm up the milk.

SmileEachDay · 02/12/2018 18:01

Don’t you need to make either a cheesey sauce or a quiche mixture?

Sunseed · 02/12/2018 18:01

Should there be a couple of eggs beaten into the milk?

tealandteal · 02/12/2018 18:01

Isn't cheese pie made with really cheesey mashed potato? Or is that homity pie?

TarragonSauce · 02/12/2018 18:01

I think a cheese and potato pie is a better idea.

gobbynorthernbird · 02/12/2018 18:02

Are you trying to make a quiche?

borntobequiet · 02/12/2018 18:03

You are doing it wrong. Google a proper recipe.

InspectorIkmen · 02/12/2018 18:03

You poured milk onto cheese and into a pastry case? And you expected what exactly? Grin

Where did you get this recipe from?

ShinyMe · 02/12/2018 18:03

I'm not a big pie maker, but why would milk in the oven turn into anything other than hot milk? It won't suddenly get thick and pie like. Is this a recipe you've read somewhere?

DarthLipgloss · 02/12/2018 18:03

When i make it it either has eggs in (quiche like) or potatoes either mashed or boiled pieces as well as lightly fried onion.
I'd find a recipe from somewhere like Delia or Good Housekeeping and do that.

Iltavilli · 02/12/2018 18:04

Try this one - milk only needed to seal

clockworklime · 02/12/2018 18:06

good lord, what are you trying to make? Envy

Maryann1975 · 02/12/2018 18:06

Isn’t cheese pie just mashed potato mixed with cheese, maybe with a pepperoni sliced over it with ketchup dotted around the top? That’s what my mum used to give us anyway.

GruciusMalfoy · 02/12/2018 18:10

How did you expect the milk/cheese mixture to transform into pie filling by getting hotter?! You need a binding ingredient.

Anniversarysavings · 02/12/2018 18:10

Like the others I think you needed something to thicken the mixture. Putting that much thin liquid into a pie is just never going to result in anything other than super soggy mess.

I wouldn’t go for cheese and white sauce either - the cheese already will go gooey and it will just be a sauce pie, probably with soggy pastry.

I would go for cheese and potato, so chopped or sliced potatoes with some cheese and into your pastry.

I don’t think there is any saving your current creation but at least now you know it doesn’t work and you can give it a try with a few changes.

ILoveFrozenPeas · 02/12/2018 18:16

If you are trying to replicate school cheese pie then you
need this:

Cheerbear23 · 02/12/2018 18:20

You need some potato in there, and probably a bit of onion too.

Shantotto · 02/12/2018 18:30

The cheese pies I’ve always had are a cheese and mashed potato mix inside the pastry.

FannyFanackerpants71 · 02/12/2018 18:33

@itsmeagain2018 what? Who told you to do that? If you put milk on top on raw pastry ain't nothing good gonna happen! You need a setting agent ( egg) at least and blind bake your base first.

itsmeagain2018 · 02/12/2018 18:36

Thanks for your replies, thought that it might work? However I like cheese in pastry..... any easy recipes on cheese in a pastry dish... yum yum

Any chance you were going for something like this? www.bbc.com/food/recipes/potato_leek_and_cheese_93841

Not trying to be mean itsmeagain but I'm guessing you're not an experienced cook? It might be best to start with some simple recipes and work from there. The bbc good food site is great or go to the Food topic on MN for ideas and recipes.

StartingGrid · 02/12/2018 18:44

How about pastry cheese twists?! Seeing as you have the ingredients and easy to make... add some pesto/sundried tomato to liven up!

Lwmommy · 02/12/2018 18:48

Or cheese and bacon wraps - square of puff pstry, slice of bacon and some grated cheese across the middle.on a diagnonal fold the empty corner into the middle. Brush with milk or egg and bake.

Cheese straws - puff pastry rolled into a large rectangle, brush with ketchup or mustard, sprinkle with grated cheese, slice into strips and bake you can twist em a little if you like for fanciness.
