Allowing kids to sit on the conveyor belt at tills :o

I'm notv a great fan of kids in the main part of trolleys (especially when said kid is 5+ and clearly too big for the seat) but letting them sit in on the belt - WTAF?

Other people seem to think this is fine and great because the kid was enjoying it but to me it's not only unsanitary but dangerous.

AIBU? Since when did kids making memories/ having fun trump everything else?!!

A child plonked on the belt in our local Tesco fell off and the parent started ranting about compensation for the injured (bang on the head) child. They soon shut up when the checkout manager told them it’s for shopping not kids so they shouldn’t t have put them on there. Grin

I hate seeing kids standing in trolley. I put my food in there and don’t want to be transferring god knows what from the bottom of some kids shoe into my fridge/cupboards.

@GimmeGimmeHellYeah @Elfinablender thank you you've both put a smile on my face 😂😂

Rattinghat

I think you should ask Santa for some tolerance this year.

AjasLipstick · 02/12/2018 21:34

Perfectly what?? You think it's ok for a child to pull all the magazines off the shelf in a shop???

Utterly bizarre.

paintinmyhairAgain · 02/12/2018 21:40

some so called parents are stupid on so many levels, example on here fore mentioned. i feel sorry for the dc when accidents happen because it's them that get hurt not the stupid parents who them blame everyone else when things go wrong.

paintinmyhairAgain · 02/12/2018 21:41

i hate the trolley thing too, totally skanky behaviour.

Flowerpot2005 · 02/12/2018 21:42

Never allowed mine on the conveyor belt but did let DD sit in the main part of the trolley, on a thick blanket when she was 3+.

I found too many people shoving past when she walked at the side of me & on occasioncatching her etc. She was happy /safe & I got my shopping done without being worried about her.

I think Rattinghat had a problem as the child was in their way. I doubt the child took up the whole of a supermarket aisle and I would think it's fine if a child was sitting on the floor reading a few magazines. A simple excuse me if you really couldn't get passed would result in most parents apologising and making room. Rattinghat also had a problem with children pulling a basket around as again the children get in their way. I think many parents let kids do this to try to involve their child in the shopping to stop them getting bored. Little children are not aware of the needs of people around them as much as adults. Most parents say sorry if their child gets in someone's way, I certainly did, but they shouldn't have to deal with people who seem to think unless children behave like adults then the supermarket is no place for them. Tolerance is the key.

AmyDowdensLeftLeftShoe · 02/12/2018 22:32

I've seen kids on conveyor belts a few times. Each time the shop assistants have politely told parents that it isn't safe. 50% of the time the shop assistant has then been insulted for being a young and stupid woman A few of them have had to point out they are older enough to be the parent's parent - the parent is always male - and do they want the store manager over to explain why it is a safety issue. Only seen the store manager with security (large male) come over once and oddly then the parent (male) agreed with them.

Oh and the kids I take to supermarkets have their own baskets but without those bloody wheels. I hate those baskets with the damn wheels so no kid I'm in charge off can use one.

DayManChampionOfTheSun · 02/12/2018 22:38

Oh and the kids I take to supermarkets have their own baskets but without those bloody wheels. I hate those baskets with the damn wheels so no kid I'm in charge off can use one* haha yep! I don't even trust myself to use a basket on wheels. The bloody handle always falls back in. I imagine lots of small fingers have been trapped in the slide mechanism before. Children trolleys if they have them available or normal baskets would be my go-to.

OP YANBU, its a stupid place to put a child, fuck the hygiene, it's the safety issue that would concern me, hair and clothes getting trapped or falling off.

Bibijayne · 02/12/2018 22:42

My dad changed my nappy on a conveyor belt at a supermarket when I was a baby. It was in protest to the lack of baby changing facilities accessible to dads. This was 30-odd years ago.

noenergy · 03/12/2018 00:14

@Bibijayne that's just vile.

SunsetOnTheHorizon · 03/12/2018 00:20

I googled de-gloving rattinghat Help! How can I under that all?!

I have never seen a child on the conveyor belt! Why on earth would you put them there?! Hmm

Nanny0gg · 03/12/2018 00:27

Most conveyor belts have notices to keep fingers away as they could get trapped.

And if you want your child in a trolley, there is a handy bit called a Seat.
If they're too big for that then they can walk sensibly.

Rattinghat · 03/12/2018 00:30

So would it be acceptable if I pulled all the copies of Chat and Take a Break off the shelf, opened them all up and spread them around on the supermarket floor, sprawled around and read them, and then shoved them all back messily and didn't even buy one?

Walkingdeadfangirl · 03/12/2018 02:44

The PC police are out to destroy everyone's fun. Run for the hills.

AjasLipstick · 03/12/2018 02:58

Perfectly you said

I doubt the child took up the whole of a supermarket aisle and I would think it's fine if a child was sitting on the floor reading a few magazines.

And it's NOT fine to let small children rifle through magazines which other people are going to pay for! Not in the slightest! I don't want to pay full price for a dirty and dog-eared magazine thank you!

Bibijayne · 03/12/2018 04:39

@noenergy not really, it made an important point and new - appropriate - changing facilities for babies were installed the next week. It would have been more vile for a small baby to have to be changed on the floor of the men's toilets because the supermarket didn't think dad's ever took their kids out on their own.

Belindabauer · 03/12/2018 07:32

Yep I can see the type of parent trying to sue the supermarket for their own neglectfulness.

MartaHallard · 03/12/2018 07:49

did let DD sit in the main part of the trolley, on a thick blanket when she was 3+....She was happy /safe & I got my shopping done without being worried about her.

You were absolutely one hundred per cent certain she wouldn't try to stand up when your back was turned for a moment? If not, she was safer standing beside you.

BluthsFrozenBananas · 03/12/2018 07:51

The PC police are out to destroy everyone's fun. Run for the hills

What’s politically correct about thinking supermarket conveyor belts aren’t safe for children to be sitting on?

ushuaiamonamour · 03/12/2018 07:56

This genuinely happened - it's all over a local FB Page. You mean local to you, eh? Not to out you but I'm wondering if you live in a town called Springfield--did the child's mother have blue hair? do you know the child's name? not by any chance 'Maggie', is it?

Bibijayne What a brilliant form of protest. I hope it made the shop reconsider its policy.

ushuaiamonamour · 03/12/2018 07:58

Bibijayne Your latest went up whilst I was writing a post. Good, and well done your father.

I agree with the conveyor belts. But there’s nothing ‘skanky’ about putting your child in a trolley ffs.
