FFS angel costume!

1400spincycle · 02/12/2018 10:47

Ok so this is just a rant but WIBU to just go and bloody buy a sodding angel costume from sainsburys?

Ok so I make the kids costumes because I like the idea of it. Then it comes to the reality that I really am crap at sewing, especially the whole spacial awareness back to back bit. sewing the right shape to the right shape etc. Now I have a deadline of tomorrow. I should be getting organised for work etc and I have reached my wits end.

I should really persevere with the almost finished home made one but just want to chuck it in the bin.

Any simmilar stories to make me feel better?

No but you go ahead and buy one OP

Life is too short to fret . Flowers

NancyDonahue · 02/12/2018 10:48

It's sad but it's often cheaper to buy a ready made costume.

Owlettele · 02/12/2018 10:52

Go buy one and don't feel too guilty. I planned to make but never found the time and am not really very creative so feel it would be a bit rubbish. I have opted to get a silver and white dress that she will use again as it's a normal dress and buy wings and a halo separately. You won't be the only mum who has bought. Enjoy what is left of your Sunday!!

1400spincycle · 02/12/2018 10:53

and i know DD would love a bought one too...

Don’t be a martyr. Buy one if that’s what you wsnt

DaphneDiligaf · 02/12/2018 10:58

Supermarkets selling angel costumes is Gods way of telling people not to make them!

mindutopia · 02/12/2018 10:59

Just bought dd’s from Amazon. I don’t do costume making.

Cornettoninja · 02/12/2018 11:03

How quick do you need it? You could have a look on eBay and comfort yourself with the environmental friendliness of it.

Justanothernameonthepage · 02/12/2018 11:09

Buy a supermarket one and if you feel you must, customise it.

WutheringFrights · 02/12/2018 11:14

I usually make my kids costumes...DS came home from school all excited about being a cow in the nativity and we looked at Pinterest for ideas...

....we woke up yesterday morning to find that the Elf had been up to his tricks over night and used my Amazon account to buy a cow costume 😊

Hillarious · 02/12/2018 11:17

What happened to just being able to send your kid in an adult size white t-shirt or shirt with a halo of tinsel in their hair?

twoshedsjackson · 02/12/2018 11:47

I agree with Hillarious - also adult size red Tshirt for Roman soldier's tunic and various other colours for villagers etc. Favourite quote from disheartened 6-year-old (I was in charge of notebashing carols, so had to check roles for who sang which verse)......."I'm just a people".

User9870 · 02/12/2018 11:51

You'll find most children are in shop bought.my DD last year was the only homemade outfit and that's only because I was too skint to buy a costume.

Oysterbabe · 02/12/2018 11:52

I will 100% be buying all costumes once my 2 are at school. There's always someone who will sell you the one you need for buttons if you post on my local mums facebook group.

Bestseller · 02/12/2018 11:58

IME most angels will wear either a white dress or fairy costume they already own with a tinsel halo or a super market angel costume.

I've mostly worked in fairly socially deprived schools but I've never met these mums who make costumes, other than by cobbling together bits they ready have.

RedSkyLastNight · 02/12/2018 12:02

This is where I never appreciated my DC's school when they were there.
They were determined that no one should feel obliged to make costumes or go out and buy one.

Angels were just asked to wear white/light colours, and they made haloes from a bit of tinsel at school.

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 02/12/2018 12:03

We have all our costumes in school already. All our angel costumes were made out of sheets and pillow cases! We only bought Mary Joseph the donkey and a camel!

pudcat · 02/12/2018 12:06

A white Tshirt with a net curtain, gathered in middle for wings and attached to back and wrists with a tinsel halo looks fine.

pudcat · 02/12/2018 12:08

I have never asked parents to make costumes. We had a good wardrobe of costumes and just asked for coloured tights, trousers and shirts.

pitterpatterrain · 02/12/2018 12:14

My DD is an angel this year. Amazon’d the wings and halo, plus happened to have a white dress from summer so she can pop a white vest on underneath plus tights to keep warm.

NeverTalksToStrangers · 02/12/2018 12:18

Ds school provides the costumes also. Such a waste new ones being bought/made every year. It would be different if the roles changed, but the nativity tends not to vary much.

MartaHallard · 02/12/2018 12:23

.....other than by cobbling together bits they ready have.

Isn't that how Nativity costumes are supposed to be made? When my nephew was an angel, he wore a bit of white net curtain with a hole cut for his head, and a tinsel halo.

A school near me does animal costumes by making cardboard headbands, with cotton wool stuck on for sheep, horns and brown and black markings for cattle. I've seen them coming out of school after the play. I'm guessing each child makes his/her own.

Of course a white t shirt would be fine, as would a bought costume. School have suggested both these options. Last year DD was about the only DC in a home made costume. The issue is purely one of my own making. Or lack of it! ha. costume is almost done, just driving me up the wall.

It is my complete over estimation of my skills and the time I have available that has caused it!

Parents buying new costumes every year is so wasteful and indicative of the times we live in
