To buy a dishwasher?

To buy or not to buy?

I can kind of afford one I have seen online in a sale, as in it would be a ‘luxury item’ I could pay out of a bit savings, having been pretty tight this year - it’s doable. I don’t buy many things like that often at all. I would have to move my kitchen around a bit but there is space and DC are well up for it as washing up is their chore. I work quite a lot and DC are terrible at washing things up properly (still dirty and need re washing) and I feel like my kitchen is always covered in dirty plates!!

But part of me wonders if it is a grass is greener thing - will it really make my life easier at all and end up being £150 waste of money? They aren’t the most environmentally friendly items I suppose either. Do I just leave the little bit of savings where they are and just continue my life of a cluttered sink?

I didn’t get one until my oldest to were late primary years.

Get one. It’s the biggest game changer. More so than a tumble dryer.

Threeminis · 02/12/2018 00:46

Do it. If you have the space and the money, it's a no brainer!

Nanalisa60 · 02/12/2018 00:47

If you can afford it then buy one!! They are fantastic I have had a dishwasher for the last twenty years and would not be with out one. Just get one with a good AA rating and make sure your fill it wright up before you use it. I still wash pots and pans in the sink!! I also NEVER rinse stuff before putting in the dishwasher.

jimmyhill · 02/12/2018 00:49

Unless you are on the absolute breadline the capital outlay is TINY and they deliver the biggest change to your lifestyle in exchange for the smallest investment.

You'll never look back.

Augusta2012 · 02/12/2018 00:49

Do it, honestly. Saves so much time.

seventhgonickname · 02/12/2018 00:51

I'm considering one too I have a tiny kitchen but think more work surface would be available if dirty dishes were in there instead of waiting to be washed.
What can't be put in a dishwasher?

Disquieted1 · 02/12/2018 00:51

Buy it. Life's too short.
But be prepared for the discussions about whose turn it is to load it Smile

tiggerbounce77 · 02/12/2018 00:52

Yes, get one, you will not regret it at all.

PookieDo · 02/12/2018 00:53

So I have cash back I can change up to pay for most of it. So it is not spare cash laying around iyswim exactly but changing it into the vouchers will allow me to buy it then a bit extra from Xmas money. Not on breadline but not a high earner!

It’s in my basket. Just haven’t been brave enough to order it! I’m a total wimp when it comes to big purchases

Changed my life - do it!

catsofa · 02/12/2018 00:56

"will it really make my life easier" - yes! Yes it really will.

I've got a counter top one since it's only me and my small child here, and it takes up less than the space that the pile of dirty dishes used to take up in the kitchen.

Another vote for "It changed my life" here, you are missing out!

AornisHades · 02/12/2018 00:57

It's a small luxury. You have the space and means to have it and they aren't particularly bad environmentally.

MrsMiggel · 02/12/2018 00:58

It is life changing! Dirty dishes are hidden from view, worktops are clear, and no washing up to do. I luxuriously use as many spoons and stuff as I want because I don’t have to wash them. Even stuff like sponges and toys go in the dishwasher.

pallisers · 02/12/2018 00:58

I honestly think I wouldn't cook, entertain or do anything if I didn't ahve a dishwasher. do it. just do it. It is the best luxury you can get.

PookieDo · 02/12/2018 00:58

I also have no idea how to plumb one in 😂

UsernameTaken2 · 02/12/2018 01:10

Just make sure that before you buy it your plates and cups are dishwasher friendly. If they have any sort of metallic rim or decoration they can't be put in the dishwasher and some patterned plates can't be put in or it will take the pattern off

gluteustothemaximus · 02/12/2018 01:13

Best money we ever spent. We spent years washing up every sodding day. It’s like a magic cupboard. You clear and tidy the kitchen so fast, put it in the magic cupboard and then it's all clean again.

I love it. It’s the best gadget in the house by far.

We only use the fast 30 minute cycle though. The longer ones use too much electric/water etc.

Rattinghat · 02/12/2018 01:14

I even got rid of my washing machine as it was the only way in my tiny flat to get a dishwasher, and started having my laundry done on service washes. Still worth it.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 02/12/2018 01:19

While the best thing about a dishwasher is the obvious "it washes dishes", a close second best is "it stores and hides dirty dishes"
No more 2 mugs and a plate sitting manky in the sink!

Schnable · 02/12/2018 01:21

What everyone’s said! I ignored mine (new house) for six months and I had a new baby. I don’t know what I was thinking. (Something environmental that doesn’t stack up, I guess) You are very unlikely to regret it. Regarding plumbing it in, was there one in your kitchen before?

DramaAlpaca · 02/12/2018 01:22

Do it! Press that button & order it. Now! And plumbing it in is easy, it really is.

Threeminis · 02/12/2018 01:24

Just press the button. Ask around for someone who could help you plumb it in. You will not regret it.

PookieDo · 02/12/2018 01:27

IRL the person I have asked to help plumb it in is just trying to talk me out of it. Which makes me feel irresponsible Angry

You can also stick the grilles from your extractor fan and the pan rest things off the hob (whatever they’re called) in there. It’s a revelation! Instant domestic goddess.

LaurieMarlow · 02/12/2018 01:38

I loved mine so much I put in two when we remodelled the kitchen.

It's absolutely worth it. Why waste your precious time washing dishes?
