To buy a dishwasher?

To buy or not to buy?

I can kind of afford one I have seen online in a sale, as in it would be a ‘luxury item’ I could pay out of a bit savings, having been pretty tight this year - it’s doable. I don’t buy many things like that often at all. I would have to move my kitchen around a bit but there is space and DC are well up for it as washing up is their chore. I work quite a lot and DC are terrible at washing things up properly (still dirty and need re washing) and I feel like my kitchen is always covered in dirty plates!!

But part of me wonders if it is a grass is greener thing - will it really make my life easier at all and end up being £150 waste of money? They aren’t the most environmentally friendly items I suppose either. Do I just leave the little bit of savings where they are and just continue my life of a cluttered sink?

@delboysskinandblister

It was super cheap after Black Friday anyway. But I can collect it myself and it’s not for home delivery so I need to shop about

I Love my dishwasher. If it broke and I couldn't afford a replacement, I'd live on value beans until I saved enough to replace it. Not entirely jokingBlush

redsummershoes · 02/12/2018 18:12

do it.
if on a water meter it will probably save you money (not much though) on water.

delboysskinandblister · 02/12/2018 18:17

aha! I would definitely shop around. I also think there would be less delivery delays or problems after Christmas.

Fingers crossed you get the one you want.

Remember if they deliver and unpack and install any faults are covered by them. Just cover yourself is all I'm saying

I need to get long hoses as either the dishwasher or the washing machine needs to move further away

And I need Y joints? So I can have both wastes/cold inlet connected?

OP posts:
delboysskinandblister · 02/12/2018 18:44

yes. you have one rising main so the Y inlet allows the incoming cold feed to be shared between washing machine and dishwasher. Does that make sense?

I would highly recommend that the company do this if you're unsure.

delboysskinandblister · 02/12/2018 18:48

yes we do too in our kitchen for the washing machine because the dishwasher is next to the sink. Don't be tempted to join existing hoses as this can place an unecessary strain on the inlet.

It is possible - people do it but it's usually not recommended by the appliance manufacturer only because it can invalidate the guarantee. Will it be built in or freestanding dishwasher?

AnnaMagnani · 02/12/2018 18:52

Do it, do it, do it.

We were without dishwasher for a month when ours packed in. DH, who is solely responsible for the dishes, has barely recovered from the trauma.

There is no comparison between stacking a dishwasher and actually having to do the dishes.

PookieDo · 02/12/2018 19:00

The main issue is the plumbing really. So just fit a Y to the waste and Y to the cold for both? Or not?

Good god DO IT and don't look back. I got my dishwasher as an utterly skint single mother in 2001 and had to brave the tutting and rolled eyes of my family and some friends, who thought I was being lazy and self-indulgent... Well, that's a point of view I suppose, but 17 years later that dishwasher is still going strong [Bosch if you're interested], and in my opinion is the best and most cost-effective £300 I've ever spent.

Buy it. It will make your life easier to the power of ten.

delboysskinandblister · 02/12/2018 19:06

Look at the customer reviews and sort by customer rating don't just go by most popular. The ones who have parted with their money and had the appliance installed are the ones who are disarmingly honest and useful to you. If you can get a good German make by not necessarily the dearest. For example Bosch (cheaper), Neff (mid price) and Siemens (dearest) are all built n the same platform but I'd stick with Bosch (freestanding) or Neff (only do built in) because it's the same components. Some of the really dear brands Miele don't get good reviews on drying so you have to dry everything again. Our Neff lasted 14 years and was sometimes on twice a night but it came 'free' with the kitchen.

I wouldn't trust any of the ones that have been in the media for spontaneous tumble dryer fires. But this is just me.

Do you know anyone that as had one for over five years and would recommend?

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 02/12/2018 19:07

Definitely do it.

I sacrificed cupboard space to fit one in, genuinely one of my best ideas!

delboysskinandblister · 02/12/2018 19:21

I am not a plumber but I would definitely get a brass Y piece robust (not plastic which split).

I just look up on you tube Dereton33 channel and also Plumber Parts www.youtube.com/user/plumberparts has been helpful over the years and also and have been doing stuff around the house a lot fo DIY since I was a teenager not bad for a girlie!

PookieDo · 02/12/2018 19:28

I can’t afford one of the high end ones - more of a budget dishwasher for me!

OP posts:
delboysskinandblister · 02/12/2018 19:29

have you gone down the plughole? Grin

AlanThePig · 02/12/2018 19:32

2 things I had fitted when we moved. Dishwasher and waste disposal unit. Not sure what I did before either.
DO IT

delboysskinandblister · 02/12/2018 19:32

Sorry cross posted. I would wait for the post Christmas sales and catch yourself a bargain. only say that because we went through a serious of washing machines that just didn't last and it caused more expense and probelms we could ill afford. If you can save and wait. Smile

donajimena · 02/12/2018 19:39

I've a slimline one because its the only size I could fit. Its still a lifechanger.

Queenofthedrivensnow · 02/12/2018 19:39

A work colleague gave me a right lecture about dishwashers. But their house is manky.

A dishwasher space was top priority when I viewed this house.

AnnaMagnani · 02/12/2018 19:58

I got my old dishwasher second-hand from someone who was replacing all her whitegoods so they matched.

It proceeded to last me 14 years until it blew out this year. A bargain considering it wasn't even new in the first place.
