To hoover at 3am!

Seriously why would you?

This was my daughters neighbour last night. She was awake because of her newborn but i doubt the other people in the block were until her idiot neighbour started hoovering.

I'm just baffled at the logic here

Errr no YANBU, was she making some passive aggressive complaint about the baby crying (which would be very silly)? Does she have mental health issues? Or is she just nocturnal and incredibly inconsiderate?

QuestionableMouse · 01/12/2018 22:13

Maybe she'd broken a glass? I Hoover if I break a glass/mug because it gets all the tiny bits.

AmyDowdensLeftLeftShoe · 01/12/2018 22:16

That would count as unreasonable noise pollution due to the time of day.

Your daughter or her partner should have gone round and told the neighbour the next day they are CF.

missionofmercy · 01/12/2018 22:17

Was it one of those thousands of Vacuums or an actual Hoover. That is the question!

People can do strange things, but so can we, although we just don't see it at the time.

If it is constant at that hour. Yes I would ask. Was it/is it constant or a one off?

Dollymixture22 · 01/12/2018 22:19

I don’t however after 8pm. Even though my neighbours shout and slam doors at 3am.

Dollymixture22 · 01/12/2018 22:19

Hoover not however!,

babysharkah · 01/12/2018 22:23

Out of order but I wonder if she was looking for something to make the baby sleep - my mum used to have to run the hoover to get my sister to sleep. Still not fair on mayhem else though!

Aquamarine1029 · 01/12/2018 22:24

If it's a one off I would assume something glass was broken. In fact this happened to me just last week. My husband and I enjoyed a glass of wine in bed and like an idiot I knocked it over when I went to the loo at 2am. Glass was EVERYWHERE and out came the Hoover.

Ruddle91 · 01/12/2018 22:25

My neighbours seem to think it's totally acceptable. We are terraced housing with thick walls, it's only in the silly hours where it's otherwise deathly silent I can hear her hoover. She's nuts and hoovers multiple times a day 🤷🏻‍♀️.

jomaIone · 01/12/2018 22:30

I doubt id be woken by next doors hoover if I was already asleep! I don't even hear my own when I'm upstairs and husband is hoovering!!

RebelWitchFace · 01/12/2018 22:31

If it's a one off then probably something happened that required hoovering right away.

goodbyestranger · 01/12/2018 22:37

Amy it's not noise pollution unless it's recurrent.

TheBouquets · 01/12/2018 22:39

Could the neighbour have been sleepwalking?
As far as I can see people don't actually realise how much noise they are making and how it affects neighbouring houses. Or perhaps they do know and they just don't care. Hard flooring seems to make the noise even worse

norfolkandchanceyou · 01/12/2018 22:43

No idea if it's a one off but baby wasn't crying and annoying them. He chatters quietly away only audible to his parents so not a revenge thing.

Hoping it's not a recurrent thing but neighbour downstairs has a history of being strange!

BunsOfAnarchy · 01/12/2018 22:45

Maybe its the 1950s again and shes been taking speed

Skatersbeskating · 01/12/2018 22:47

No noise between 11pm-7am is the rules.

Print a copy out and pop it through her door.

No point knocking due to hoover

CheshireChat · 01/12/2018 22:47

Surely something must've happened, doubt they were doing it for fun. My perfectly lovely neighbour decided to rearrange his bedroom furniture at 4am once, I assume he lost something behind or similar.

I do think it's nice you are annoyed on your DD's behalf- Flowers for the DGC.

midgwit · 01/12/2018 23:11

Only people I've ever known who made a habit of vacuuming in the early hours were drug (usually amphetamine) addicts.

explodingkitten · 01/12/2018 23:19

I'd vacuum broken glass at any hour of the night because I don't want the cats to hurt themselves. If it's a one time thing then it's probably that.

explodingkitten · 01/12/2018 23:21

I realise that I don't know about drugs as I'm almost teetotal but isn't the idea to take drugs to have some fun? Vacuuming doesn't sound like fun.... or do you mean that their day-night rythm is off?

Notcontent · 01/12/2018 23:24

Some people are just really inconsiderate. I live in a terraced house and there are lots of things I don’t do early in the morning or late in the evening, because that would be antisocial - vacuuming, puttting my washing machine on, etc.

Barchester · 01/12/2018 23:34

You mentioned that your daughter lives in a block, so presumably a mansion block or apartment block. If so, there will be a lease that deals with matters like making noise and that restricts noisy appliances to certain hours. For safety reasons I too would get out the hoover if I broke a glass or plate in the early hours, even though it is against the lease of my flat but it would only be for a few minutes. If this turns out not to be a one off, your daughter should complain to the managing agents or whoever else runs the block.

RockYourSocksOff · 01/12/2018 23:35

Even my arsehole neighbours who sadly never heard of soft close hinges for their kitchen cupboard doors, don’t vacuum at such a ridiculous time.

If it’s a one off then it’s possibly broken glass, if it’s regular then YANBU and neighbour needs to know how sound travels in the early hours.

AnoukSpirit · 01/12/2018 23:42

I wouldn't care if my neighbours vacuumed during the night. I do care when they've woken me up screaming in the street or with the police banging on their doors.

Cuzcothellama · 01/12/2018 23:51

All those vaccuuming broken glass - all you need is a slice of bread. Press on the floor & all the tiny shards get embedded in it. No need for hoover.
