To be annoyed about goose fat/beef dripping being on everything?

Vegetarian here, and I can't help but notice so many of the roast potatoes have either goose or beef dripping on them these days. It's actually difficult to find roast spuds suitable for veggies, and the packaging looks very similar so it's easy for some people to buy the wrong ones (my nan accidently brought beef dripping ones rather than veggie).

In the shop today, I couldn't dinf any Aunt Bessie or McCain veggie roast potatoes, I had to buy own brand. What's going on?

I’m right there with you OP, but I cook largely from scratch.

DoneLikeAKipper · 01/12/2018 19:08

Why not make your own? Easiest way to avoid all cross contamination I would imagine.

TrickyKid · 01/12/2018 19:13

I thought you were going to say in restaurants, in which case yanbu but why buy premade for home, just make your own.

ragged · 01/12/2018 19:17

We make our own, almost daily. Not difficult.

Lockheart · 01/12/2018 19:17

Just buy potatoes and roast them in sunflower / vegetable oil.

ChodeofChodeHall · 01/12/2018 19:21

YABU for complaining about pre-packaged roast potatoes when they are one of the easiest things to make, with only two ingredients.

MrsMeeseeks · 01/12/2018 19:24

In the shop today, I couldn't dinf any Aunt Bessie or McCain veggie roast potatoes, I had to buy own brand.

Deep breaths, now. You can get through this.

UserMe18 · 01/12/2018 19:24

Store made potatoes taste shit, you're not missing anything!

CountessOfNowhere · 01/12/2018 19:48

Ready made roasties are an abomination. Make your own and you know that they're veggie.

BonnieandHyde · 01/12/2018 19:55

YABU for buying premade. Lazy mare. Steam some spuds in the micro and toss in oil then put them in the oven for the same time as the shitty horrible frozen ones.

JennyHolzersGhost · 01/12/2018 19:56

Why the hell would you buy pre cooked roasties ?!

PurpleCrowbar · 01/12/2018 19:59

I can sort of see buying roasties if you really aren't a confident cook, but honestly, they're easy to make.

Parboil - you can do this the night before, & actually it improves them IME as they crisp up better from going into hot fat cold - then into your fat of choice for an hour in the oven. Sorted.

BeanBagLady · 01/12/2018 20:20

Frozen roast potatoes are very School dinnerish, whatever day they are in.

Avoid.

Talkinpeece · 01/12/2018 20:23

You buy Roast potatoes ?
blimey

abbsisspartacus · 01/12/2018 20:25

Yup and they have wheat on them most the time I mean I cook from scratch but I would love to have the option occasionally 😂

Biancadelriosback · 01/12/2018 20:28

Sorry I'm with everyone else...who buys frozen roasties?? Utter madness!

nocoolnamesleft · 01/12/2018 20:28

Ready made roasties are an abomination.

^^This

Andcake · 01/12/2018 20:30

Another confused by buying roast potatoes -really easy to make and I'm not really a cook!

BackBoiler · 01/12/2018 20:30

I do buy frozen roast potatoes and ready made yorkshire puddings occasionally, mainly for when we end up all eating at random times/or after my hysterectomy for example so I could just chuck them in the oven for kids tea when they got home from school

DaysOfCurlySpencer · 01/12/2018 20:34

We used to go for Sunday lunch at a posh pub, they did a vegetarian roast which was just the veggies and Yorkshire. Then they started using duck fat on the potatoes and probably parsnips too.

They advertised it as a vegetarian roast but proudly listed on the menu as potatoes roasted in duck fat. We don't go there now because if they don't know that is a problem for some of the customers then what is the point in advertising a vegetarian option.

Foamybanana93 · 01/12/2018 20:35

Third world problems this Hmm

Jaxtellerswife · 01/12/2018 20:37

@MrsMeeseeks
I genuinely laughed at that

CheshireChat · 01/12/2018 20:46

Meh, I buy them as well, don't mind cooking from scratch but don't feel it's worth the effort with roasties.

Mind you, I also buy frozen mash as that I can't cook, on my last attempt it was shiny and waxy Confused.

RightOnTheEdge · 01/12/2018 20:52

@MrsMeeseeks thank you!
I am feeling seriously down about life at the moment and you properly made me laugh Grin

IstanbulConstan · 01/12/2018 20:53

Have you Tweeted Aunt Bessie and complained?
