To think world's gone mad RE advent calendars

So I caught a little bit of a breakfast show and they were discussing how chocolate advent calendars should be banned as its not good for children !!!!

Am I the only one that thinks this is just crazy. A little bit of chocolate each day for the run up to Christmas is not going to have a negative affect on your child if they have a balanced diet the rest of the time.

Oh ha from the title I assumed this was going to be about the artisan gin calendars and beauty calendars and all of that!

Me too! I saw one advertised that contained spanners.

A small square of chocolate per day is fine, I think.

JustAskingForAFriend · 01/12/2018 10:09

It's crazy isn't it.

My dcs have one. In fact my eldest has 2 as won one in a raffle.
My 9m old has one. To be honest she'll probably only eat half a chocolate and doubt it be everyday as I know ill forget. But it's not going to hurt.
Its part of the fun.. I miss having an advent the chocolate tasted better for some reason haha

A cheap chocolate advent calendar is surely one if the joys of being a kid? Ds has his about five seconds after waking up Grin I’m sure it won’t tip him into obesity as long as the rest of his diet is fine. I’m far more concerned with the kids who are met from school daily with a family bag of haribo

sweeneytoddsrazor · 01/12/2018 10:14

Who the hell wants an advent calender of spanners Grin

holasoydora · 01/12/2018 10:18

My kids have ended up with two chocolate ones and a toy one. —thank you in-laws—

But they were so excited today. We don’t do anything Elf in the Shelf and I am otherwise disorganised about making advent magical.

Houseonahill · 01/12/2018 10:19

It must be like 3g of chocolate! The world gets more and more absurd Sad

NanooCov · 01/12/2018 10:21

The spanners one is actually excellent. Considered getting it for bike mad DH. But we've got the Hotel Chocolat one with two chocs a day. Neither of my kids really like chocolate so they have toy ones, so needed to get myself a chocolate one Grin

It's the first of December! I get to open my DSs Lego calendar!

Theweasleytwins · 01/12/2018 10:23

Lidl do a car tool one

LuckyDiamond · 01/12/2018 10:29

My DD is having a Lego advent calendar for the first time (we usually fill a reusable one with sweets). She’s nearly 11 and loves it. She’s taken down other toys to play on the box and is excited about tomorrow. Can’t ask for more than that.

I was telling her about the advent calendars we got as kids, just cardboard with a picture behind the door. My siblings and I used to argue over who was the lucky one who opened the door today.

One year we got an advent candle instead. Ooh the excitement Grin

ForalltheSaints · 01/12/2018 10:32

The small ones maybe are OK, but some are not so small.

popcornwizard · 01/12/2018 10:37

We were exactly the same. It was considerably less exciting when my mother lit then forgot about it on day 5 and we had to wait until the 23rd to light it again.

AllTakenSoRubbishUsername · 01/12/2018 10:38

Were these people green with long fingers, by any chance??

HexagonalBattenburg · 01/12/2018 10:40

We have a reusable one that I decorated last year that has the totally terrible couple of Haribo a day in it, and then they've both got a toy one each - one's got a Lego one and the other one a Playmobil one. I think the toy ones are eyewateringly expensive but the kids love them and the first thing this morning was "Happy birthday daddy... can we do our advent calendars now!"

Poor DH's birthday is totally overshadowed by the first day of advent calendars.

LilMadAgain · 01/12/2018 10:41

Now birthday cake is forbidden in schools and the lunchbox police confiscate small treats from children I suppose it was only a matter before they came after the advent calendars :/ I have a refillable one like a pp and shock! Horror! I've hidden 3 mini bags of Haribo inside (5 sweets per bag). Someone inform the SS.

PegLegAntoine · 01/12/2018 10:43

I think they’re better than the £50 boxes of daily tat like the zoella debacle :o

EvaReady · 01/12/2018 10:47

I think this is a non story, how the hell could you ban chocolate advent calendars. It’s just a stupid debate to fill 5 mins of a crap cheap ass program. We need better quality broadcasting.

Missingstreetlife · 01/12/2018 10:50

We usd to have one which had no gifts, the fun was all about counting the days and seeing a nice picture in the window.
I think it's all too consumerist

Unihorn · 01/12/2018 10:52

My children already eat more than a tiny square of chocolate most days anyway, as have I all my life. None of us are anywhere near obese so we'll carry on.

empmalswa · 01/12/2018 10:52

I was going to say similar. The world has not gone mad. It’s just a discussion on a crappy tv show. Not indicative of the worlds feelings towards chocolate advent calendars.

LuckyDiamond · 01/12/2018 10:58

I was in Germany in November a few years back, shopping. The selection of advent calendars over there is huge. Must be a massive thing there.

Returnofthesmileybar · 01/12/2018 11:04

I saw my friend in fb doing a book Advent calendar (lovely) but because "giving chocolate every day to a child is so wrong", I just thought what a fucking joy sponge, 25 teeny tiny chocs over the course of a month, I'm glad I don't live with her! Ironically every time I see her she has a bar or chocolate or bottle of coke hanging out of her gob Hmm

diddl · 01/12/2018 11:07

I've bought my kids (both early 20s) a Kinder one this year-it's the most I've ever spent!

Bit more choc per day than the ones I usually get, but I think that they'll cope!
