To think world's gone mad RE advent calendars

So I caught a little bit of a breakfast show and they were discussing how chocolate advent calendars should be banned as its not good for children !!!!

Am I the only one that thinks this is just crazy. A little bit of chocolate each day for the run up to Christmas is not going to have a negative affect on your child if they have a balanced diet the rest of the time.

Will they still be selling them today do you think? I want the Lindt one but totally forgot to pick it up yesterday. Kids have got Lego City and Lego Friends, both reduced by £5 each for Black Friday.

Witchend · 01/12/2018 11:11

No I don't think a little bit of chocolate harms them.
But actually I think it's a bit extra chocolate that really isn't needed. We loved the picture ones as children (and the fun of reusing an old favourite) but now they've become harder to find and chocolate (or bigger) are expected.

I don't think it's the "this little bit of chocolate every day will harm" but more society's attitude of a little bit here, and another bit there and it doesn't matter because it's just a little bit does cause harm.

If the chocolate ones hadn't become so common I imagine that children would still love the picture ones, without the expectation of getting more which is what people are thinking about.

Ps I got a baby angel on my first window. I can still look at it and smile on Christmas day when your chocolate is all eaten. Grin

Our local food bank have been asking for them, they had lots when I took some in, so hopefully no child near here is going without one.

corythatwas · 01/12/2018 11:14

I think this is a non story, how the hell could you ban chocolate advent calendars. It’s just a stupid debate to fill 5 mins of a crap cheap ass program. We need better quality broadcasting.

At least they're not blaming it on the immigrants. Yet.

I saw one on fb this morning for sex toys - reduced from 300 to 80 - ugh! As for moaning about chocolate ones, ffs of course it's okay for kids to have them - bloody nonsense Hmm

diddl · 01/12/2018 11:21

We also have Nikolaus here on the 6thShock!

paintinmyhairAgain · 01/12/2018 11:32

there are plenty of parents who will go with the mantra sweets only on fridays blah blah but eat the stuff when they want, double standards
advent calendar chocolate is pretty rank anyway, hardly much to get excited over.

Babyroobs · 01/12/2018 11:35

when we were kids it was just a calender with glitter on and little Christmassy pictures behind the doors and we had great pleasure opening them. Then it progressed to chocolate and I thought how lucky my kids were. Now its £100 beauty advent calenders, Gin, wine, advent calenders for dogs and cats. It's gone mad.

Starlight345 · 01/12/2018 11:38

The one month of the year I have additional motivation to get Ds ready for school . When you are ready you can have a tiny bit of chocolate works for me

xJessica · 01/12/2018 11:39

We still get the glittery picture ones - I love them!

MrDonut · 01/12/2018 11:41

Well, there will be no advent calendars after Brexit. I’ve stock piled about 40 of them to get me through to the kids turning adult.

Ok, not really...

MrDonut · 01/12/2018 11:42

We had chocolate advent calendars as kids. I’m in my 40s.

Villanelley · 01/12/2018 11:43

Even my dog has one this year Grin

Crunchymum · 01/12/2018 11:47

My DC3 will never have a traditional advent calendar (for medical reasons will always follow a strict keto diet) and in the interest of fairness I'll probably get my older 2 kids a non chocolate calendar.

This in no way means I think everyone should forgo a chocolate calendar.

Crunchymum · 01/12/2018 11:49

Traditional = chocolate

(I know chocolate calendars aren't traditional!)

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 01/12/2018 12:06

There's probably the equivalent of a medium chocolate bar spread over 24 days.

This is probably the same people who delight in adding up every single Christmas Day treat that you could conceivably eat and drink and then lecture you as to how terrible it is for your health. They usually quote something like about 8,000 calories, but going on how difficult most people would physically find it to consume every single item they suggest, I'd think it's probably more like 5,000-6,000 if you have a massive blow-out.

Eating & drinking 5,000-6,000 calories every single day: massively dangerous to your health and you would be right to strongly caution anybody doing this against it.

Eating and drinking 5,000-6,000 calories on one special feast day in the year: give it a rest, mate.

Tattletale · 01/12/2018 12:10

We definitely had choc calendars when in was a kid and I am nearly 40. We were pretty poor as well but my parents always got me and my siblings one each. Highlight of christmas for us!

Aeroflotgirl · 01/12/2018 12:13

Yes I thought the same, adult advent calendars of the Jo Malone Candle variety, or artisan cheese ones.

Wellonlyifihaveto · 01/12/2018 12:18

Five people in our house plus one dog=8 advent calendars 🙄 individual choc ones a Lego one a wooden family one and a dog one, much excitement this morning lol Grin

user1484424013 · 01/12/2018 12:41

This is exactly the problem with children today. Now the advent calendars have toys and Beauty products children's nd teenagers just expect them. Ffs I find them more a harm to children than the chocolate ones because it's promoting the attitude of entitlement as I can see. And bullshit is a chocolate calender affecting the small population of obese children. In fact I think its a lot of bullshit because I see kids all the time different schools our own school and our old school and I could count on one hand the amount of children carrying extra weight on one hand. Pissed me right off. All children need to be punished for what i consider lazy parenting. And as someone who as an adult who was a fat fucker (8stone lost) it really is just pure bad choices and being lazy. My current life situation ie baby 2 daughter and a husband with advanced stage cancer being a line parent and carer has not created to chubby kids. So that's the proof really. Chocolate advent calendars are brilliant. And the rest are bullshit. No fucker moaning on t.v. about the dangers of everyday drinking with alcohol calendars which in my opinion teaches children it's all good to drink everyday wtf is wrong with tv and the twats they allow in to talk shit knowing full well that the silly arsehole has the newest gin calendar at home....

whiskybysidedoor · 01/12/2018 12:57

When I was a kid many many moons ago I had chocolate advent calendars.

I never had opportunity to get fat from them though. My mother had food ishoohs and couldn’t hold herself back longer than about the 4/5th December.

I’d come down in the morning and she’d be all breezy saying don’t make a fuss, you still get to flick open the doors.

MortyVicar · 01/12/2018 13:06

I thought the world had gone mad when they started putting Peppa Pig and Transformers on advent calenders. I think I may be behind the times.

recently · 01/12/2018 13:09

I had a paper one as a kid and we still have a paper one now!! I don't like the chocolate ones as the chocolate is either disgusting or really expensive.
