Don't know what to do...

Triaann · 30/11/2018 12:25

I'm 5 weeks post partum

Was admitted at 2.5 weeks with an infection. Hospital stay of 3 days.

I've spiked a temperature today of over 39 and have sought advice. Midwife told me to be seen ASAP in case of reinfection/sepsis.

DH is at work and not contactable (he works away) and I can't drive whilst sick, especially with tiny baby in the car.

I feel awful. Shivery. Exactly the same as when I had a fever/infection before. I knew something was up when I woke up this morning as my joints are painful (hips mainly).

Temp came down with paracetamol but is going back up again...

WWYD in this situation where you have nobody around to help you? Shame my GP can't see me, as they're across the road. Also meant to be registering DS at 4 and it's the last day we can do it...

Bummer!

Call 111 and see if they recommend an ambulance? Or get a taxi to a and e?

Triaann · 30/11/2018 12:27

@PickledChutney nearest a&e is 17 miles away and my bank balance is pretty poor but will definitely try111. Didn't think of that!

Can your midwife not arrange an emergency gp appointment?

Doyoumind · 30/11/2018 12:29

I agree with 111. If you have to go to hospital, you have to go. If you go, call about the registration. I don't even know what happens if you miss the deadline but there isn't much you can do.

Triaann · 30/11/2018 12:30

@Sirzy they're separate from the doctors apparently and will advise walk-in centre. Tried that one! Doctors offered me a Saturday appointment at 3 tomorrow. I've booked it in case I don't get seen today... considering asking my neighbour but don't know her that well. She's lovely though and did say if I ever needed anything.... or is that cheeky? I wouldn't mind if someone asked me but wouldn't like to put anyone on the spot...

Why can’t your gp see you? I’ve never known a gp not see someone who could be having such an emergency.

Triaann · 30/11/2018 12:33

@FissionChips no appointments until tomorrow apparently. Didn't even know they were open on a Saturday.

On hold to 111 now...

OP posts:
Sirzy · 30/11/2018 12:34

I would ask the neighbour if she can give you a lift to the walk in centre

hope you get seen soon

maras2 · 30/11/2018 12:35

Please try the GP again (not sure if you have already). If no joy then ring the NHS advice line and describe your exact symptoms and situation.
How will you register baby if DH is away? He needs to be there if he's to be named as father.
Please seek help if only to speak to your midwife again.
Meanwhile, take 4 hourly Paracetamol and drink plenty.
Best wishes Flowers

FissionChips · 30/11/2018 12:36

no appointments until tomorrow apparently

Have you actually told them you have suspected sepsis and the midwife said you need to be seen ASAP?

If you really can get an appointment then ask a neighbour to take you to the walk in or hospital or just ask them to leand you money for a taxi.

maras2 · 30/11/2018 12:36

Bugger!
I seem to have x posted Smile

blueangel1 · 30/11/2018 12:37

Please call 111, they will give you advice about sepsis. You may well be fine, but it's not worth taking the chance.

FissionChips · 30/11/2018 12:37

If they are married then she can put her husbands name on the birth certificate without him being there.

LashesZ · 30/11/2018 12:40

Ring 111. Same thing happened me, discharged once they thought the infection had gone but spiked a 40 at home a few days later. Readmitted as septic and ended up on HDU for a week. I don't want to scare you but of course your temp will come down with paracetamol - that's what it does, but it won't cure the infection. Hope it is all okay for you, just don't want you at home with baby if you're poorly xx

Triaann · 30/11/2018 12:42

@maras2 he doesn't need to be there (I hope!) as we are married.

Triaann · 30/11/2018 12:50

@LashesZ oh gosh, awful. I'm struggling even to move at the moment. STILL on hold to 111!

Honestly, give the doctors another call and explain- did the midwife give any further advice given she knows you have little one and are alone?

Foslady · 30/11/2018 12:56

Please get this checked out one way or another. My FIL won’t be with us this Christmas thanks to bastard sepsis

BigusBumus · 30/11/2018 12:56

If your GP surgery is over the road, walk in there and tell the receptionist that you might have sepsis and need to be seen urgently. The GP will see you between appointments and they will probably call an ambulance for you.

Caprisunorange · 30/11/2018 12:58

111 will sort it out for you. Good luck OP

Stuckforthefourthtime · 30/11/2018 13:00

I'd walk across the road to the GP - they'll likely make space. Or do you know anyone who could drive you? I've helped out a near neighbour with new baby before even though we didn't really know each other, I think most people would help if they could, especially other mums.

hellsbellsmelons · 30/11/2018 13:03

I hope 111 answer and help and if not then it's 999 and an ambulance.
You can't take the risk of not being looked at.
It could be very dangerous for you.
When is DH due back?

HollowTalk · 30/11/2018 13:03

Normal rules re GP don't apply when you've had a baby, or so my GP practice told me. You need to tell them you have to be seen today.

Caprisunorange · 30/11/2018 13:05

OP it’s worth saying infections after birth are fairly common. Sepsis is rare. 111 will
Triage you

maras2 · 30/11/2018 13:15

Oops Sorry for the wrong info on the birth certificate. Blush
Hope you feel better soon.
