Do you kill creepy crawlies/insects that enter your home?

Had a nose around one of the mrs hinch fb groups this morning. They had a poll with what insects that they kill if found in their home. The majority on the poll said they kill any insect that enters the home. Top of the poll was spiders followed by flies, wasps, ants, slugs and woodlice. Someone even separately added ladybirds as something they kill. I admit I give zero tolerance to flies, wasps and slugs. I appreciate its each individuals home and everyone has different morals but I was surprised that the majority on the poll said they killed all insects. Whats the MN position on creepy crawlies then?

Mosquitos and our bloody clothes moths get squashed. Everything else I just leave to get on with it.

I try not to kill anything, my nan was a Buddhist and I became terrified as a child of the concept that if I killed an insect I might come back as one in my next life! If I do accidentally kill anything I feel really bad. Except mosquitoes those fuckers can die. I hate spiders but try my best not to kill them, the little ones I just leave where they are as they eat flies so as long as they don't get in my face I'm happy to co exist.

megletthesecond · 30/11/2018 14:18

No. I've got a couple of spiders who are living in my kitchen diner, I've no intention of getting rid of them.

Only wasps if they refuse to budge. Even then I try and catch them in a glass first.

mydogisthebest · 30/11/2018 14:19

No insects get killed in our house. Both me and DH think it is wrong to kill any living creature.

I am terrified of spiders so DH puts them out, usually in the garage. Wasps he deals with as I am allergic to their sting. Flies are a pain and we seemed to have loads this year but, again, would never kill them.

I hate it when it has been raining and you get lots of slugs and snails on the pavements. If I tread on one accidentally it really upsets me.

Me personally? No.

My cat however...

DavedeeDozyBeakyMickandTich · 30/11/2018 14:28

I obviously have delicious blood as mosquitoes always eat me alive, it's me versus them! I draw the line at being actively fed on in my own home Grin

RoboticMary · 30/11/2018 14:31

I do. Spiders, flies, whatever... I have no hesitation. I can’t stand insects in my house.

thecatneuterer · 30/11/2018 14:34

Only mosquitos and, more recently clothes moths (but even that was with a heavy heart).

I currently have a huge spider in my kitchen which I'm a bit worried about. What's he going to eat? Is he sort of hibernating and so will be OK? If I put him out will the cold kill him?

I probably could do some googling but if anyone could tell me what to do for the best I'd be grateful.

Peachydream · 30/11/2018 14:34

No- We tend not to kill anything like that, stuff either gets wafted out or ignored, even bees which I'm allergic to. We have bedroom spider (Aragog) and motorbike wing mirror spider.

Motorbike Spider is very industrious and has been known to construct web from mirror to handlebars to floor & washing line. I have an image of the spider putting his Biggles goggles and leather sheepskin hat on whilst gripping for dear life while DP does track days.

Willlowthewasp · 30/11/2018 14:38

I just remembered that I hoovered up some ants in the summer!

ThanksForAllTheFish · 30/11/2018 14:40

Wasps, bluebottles and flies get given a fair chance to go out the window - I open it nice and wide for them. After that it’s electrocution by my electric fly zapper thing.

Bees get helped as much as possible to escape on their own but I will catch and release if they won’t go on their own.

Spiders I leave alone to do thier thing (unless stuck in the bath then I help them out). I did have a false widow living in my window sill once and I flicked it into the garden with a bit of card rather than let it stay.

Small unidentified creepy crawlies get shown to the cat and are promptly killed and eaten.

SpamChaudFroid · 30/11/2018 14:54

Catch and release for everything here, even the Bluebottles, they're sneaky and will zoom in and lay strings of disgusting eggs on DCat's food. Angry

SpamChaudFroid · 30/11/2018 14:56

*However, I'm less tolerant in the garden, slugs get skewered and sawflies and greenflies squished. No pesticides though.

Steamedbadger · 30/11/2018 15:00

Bees and spiders will get put outside (might leave a small spider). I would never kill either of these.

Wasps, flies, mozzies, slugs, wasps, ants, clothes moths and head lice don't make it out of our house alive. I will hunt down nearby wasp and ant nests too.

ItsJustTheOneSwanActually · 30/11/2018 15:02

The cat kills and eats everything. I try and rescue bees before he gets them, anything else is fair game.

No slugs where I live - too dry.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 30/11/2018 15:03

Hopping I'm so glad I'm not alone! The spider who lives behind my wing mirror is called Terry. I like seeing him pop out every so often. Spiders are cool Smile

Willow1992 · 30/11/2018 15:11

If it's something crawly like a spider I use a glass to put it out.
If it flies I might make an attempt to let it out the window but if if it will insist on flying about for hours buzzing I crack and get the zapper out. I would not kill a bee, ladybird or butterfly though because I like them.
I have improved, I used to be a serial bug murderer.

Caprisunorange · 30/11/2018 15:12

A house spider will just die a slow death outside.

I would probably kills flies or wasps given the chance

Willow1992 · 30/11/2018 15:13

Oh yes, I forgot ants. They get killed and poisoned because we have had trouble with nests before.

Drogosnextwife · 30/11/2018 15:16

I generally put them all out the window or door of I can catch them except wasps. I can't lift slugs they give me the boke, I've had to get the kids to move them for me, physically can not bring myself to do it!

RayRayBidet · 30/11/2018 15:19

The one that sizzled on my kenwood sandwich toaster didn't smell sweet.
Didn't know it was there and plugged it in.
🤮 Vom

RayRayBidet · 30/11/2018 15:20

That was in reply to @bridgetreilly

Tiptopj · 30/11/2018 15:31

We try to move most bugs outside. Most spiders are welcome to stay except massive ones or ones in the bedroom. I'm quite squeamish to bugs but I feel strangely guilty if they get killed even accidently.

Tiptopj · 30/11/2018 15:34

Ment to add- I quite often give the spiders names. I had a fairly large one called Amy who lived in my bathroom for a week!
