Do you kill creepy crawlies/insects that enter your home?

Had a nose around one of the mrs hinch fb groups this morning. They had a poll with what insects that they kill if found in their home. The majority on the poll said they kill any insect that enters the home. Top of the poll was spiders followed by flies, wasps, ants, slugs and woodlice. Someone even separately added ladybirds as something they kill. I admit I give zero tolerance to flies, wasps and slugs. I appreciate its each individuals home and everyone has different morals but I was surprised that the majority on the poll said they killed all insects. Whats the MN position on creepy crawlies then?

Slugs are so sweet. I couldn't kill one.

I promise you that when you wake up to find one in your bed, it is significantly less sweet.

Greyhorses · 30/11/2018 13:02

I pretty much ignore everything but wasps which I kill as soon as possible!

pickles184 · 30/11/2018 13:03

We tolerate or relocate all insects bar mosquitoes here, I hadn't heard of silverfish before this thread, but a quick google indicates they would be very unwelcome houseguests
I have to admit that the larger housespiders do not always make it to safety, the chickens are especially fond of them and will appear out of thin air at the first sign of an upturned glass

Geekster1963 · 30/11/2018 13:05

I always vacuum ants up and empty it at the bottom of the garden, so probably kill a few of them but I hate them in the house I’ve got a bit of a thing about it.

Everything else I rescue/ chase outside. We had this bee in last year and I must have spent over 20mins getting it to go out!

vampirethriller · 30/11/2018 13:07

No I throw everything out but never kill them.

GoldenCurls · 30/11/2018 13:07

Same as Knittink if DP is home he deals with spiders, if I’m at home I kill them. I feel awful about it, but they absolutely terrify me and I really want to go to one of those classes where they teach you to hold spiders etc. I’m one of those people who spends the whole of September and October completely on edge because of them.

I try to waft flies, wasps and moths out of open windows and doors. Some of them don’t get the message though, so I usually end up killing the particularly stubborn ones.

I discovered one of these things on my bedroom wall yesterday:
www.livingwithbugs.com/carpet_beetle.html
So I will be doing a deep clean of my bedroom this weekend and looking into ways of repelling them.
Silverfish would die but luckily have not had to deal with those any time in the recent past.
Big spiders get put outside, little spiders get left alone. Flies and bitey things get killed. Wasps are fine as long as they leave and moths that are meant to be outside are fine as well but carpet moths die.

Magicpaintbrush · 30/11/2018 13:14

We have a spider called Colin who lives in our bathroom. I don't normally grant permanent residency to insects in my home but once I'd given it a name it seemed less scary. I also had a spider called Norbert living in the wing mirror of my car. Usually I use my amazing Spider Catcher to catch critters and put them outside. Flies and mosquitoes though get squashed as they carry germs and/or bite so they aren't granted any mercy.

I read that mosquitoes have caused more human deaths over the centuries than all wars put together. I can't remember where I read that but it did make me go Shock. Never felt bad about splatting one after that.

Oliversmumsarmy · 30/11/2018 13:16

Everything gets either wafted outside if it flies or the glass and piece of card if it crawls or slithers.

I did remove a giant spider once from the bath.

I did need a bowl for that one as a glass wasn't big enough.

I put it out in the garden when a bird swopped down thinking he had found lunch. Bird took one look at the spider, spider jumped and bird looked like he had second thoughts on tackling it and flew off.

Did think it might have been a tropical spider as I have only seen one that big behind glass in a zoo

Huntawaymama · 30/11/2018 13:18

Our old farmhouse has massive spiders, they get killed, small spiders I leave. Woodlouse get hoovered up if I spot them but realistically I know there will be hundreds more. After finding a slug making its way up the leg of my bed they get killed to and I have fly strips as I think they're super dirty little things

Hoppinggreen · 30/11/2018 13:19

magic I have spiders behind my wing mirrors.
The one o n the drivers side is called Sharon and the one on the passenger side is called Jeff
It’s great when I’ve has my car washed and after a few days I see a new web and know they’ve survived!

JoyofSticks · 30/11/2018 13:20

I'm not violent nor am I afraid of tiny little creatures so I kill nobody.

JoyofSticks · 30/11/2018 13:23

I don't know what the hell is wrong with people and all the killing, if you take the time to think about it you'd see it's glaringly obvious that it's wrong and for the PP saying they feel 'really awful' when they kill, that's just not true is it? If it was you'd stop!

EerieSilence · 30/11/2018 13:26

Flies - if they don't take the chance to use the door I opened for them, they're dead. I don't want them to sit on my food.
Wasps - caught and put outside.
Silverfish, moths and slugs are exterminated with no mercy.
Spiders - depends on the weather. When it's warm, they go outside. When it gets colder, they get released in the utility room where the cats don't roam otherwise they become a toy. I saved few spiders from the excessive interest of my feline biologists.
I don't get people who kill spiders. I use to suffer from arachnophobia a lot but I overcame it because I knew I didn't want my child to suffer from the same irrational fear. Also they are useful and kill flies and other pesky insects.

Branleuse · 30/11/2018 13:26

Mosquitos get killed and also if a fly really annoys me by landing on me a lot then i show it no mercy.

Anything else either gets left to it's own devices or put/ shooed outside. Wasps and false widows get put outside.

pigsDOfly · 30/11/2018 13:30

Nothing gets killed in my house except the odd fly if its buzzing is driving me mad and it refuses to leave through a window.

Hate slugs but never kill them.

I had to buy a flea spray for the house for the first time in the 7 years that I've had the dog - yes, I don't mind killing fleas - and on the instructions I was amused to see it tells you to remove all animals and spiders.

Can't somehow see myself hunting through the house prior to having to hoover the house from top to bottom and move heavy furniture from here to there to rescue any spiders that might have been foolish enough to set up home in my house. I'm afraid they're going to have to take their chances.

LittleKitty1985 · 30/11/2018 13:31

I wouldn't kill anything, however I don't mind setting my cats on them!

Bluerussian · 30/11/2018 13:31

I try very hard not to except flies. They are so persistent! However I always have a back door open when I spray so they can escape.

Insect deterrents are used for other insects. I'm scared of spiders, or at least scared of big ones, so I use a spray that makes my home uninviting. It smells nice too.

Strokethefurrywall · 30/11/2018 13:34

Nope, everything gets relocated outside except for mosquitos which are swatted. I try not to do it though.

We live in the Caribbean though so we get all sorts in here, scorpions, lizards, millipedes- actually tell a lie, we do have to kill centipedes because they're incredibly aggressive here and the bite can bring down a dog. I've only had to kill one that years ago that emerged out of the couch one evening and it was an inch thick and the length of my hand.
Vicious fucker too!

worridmum · 30/11/2018 14:00

Only bugs i kill are mostquos and fleas (ticks too) basically the parastic ones that can cause problems for pets / humans are goners everything else gets put outside / left alone.

puffyisgood · 30/11/2018 14:06

only mosquitos & headlice.

flirtygirl · 30/11/2018 14:06

Bees are showed the door or window.
Everything else is killed.

Thesnobbymiddleclassone · 30/11/2018 14:07

Depends who they run into. If DH finds them, he'll put them outside, me? No way I squish and spray them!

flirtygirl · 30/11/2018 14:07

Shown not showed.

DaysOfCurlySpencer · 30/11/2018 14:08

Everything has a chance to leave, except clothes and furniture moths, carpet beetles and mosquitos.

Spiders get special care and are always rescued, as are bees. Large moths get invited to leave and all the various shield bugs and lacewings are put outside. Flies get swooshed out but if they are a pain they get battered. I don't kill wasps, they tend to leave, neither do I chase them around and upset them, they are pollinators and although they might sting if upset, they do a good job. They sit on me so I go outside and blow them into the air, never been stung.
