Why are there so many crap employers?

I have two jobs, the other job, smaller, is quite badly run, the boss is mean as are her minions.
My other job has quite a good team and the smaller job, a private business, could learn from them. I went to a meeting recently with the smaller job, most employees there new, high turnover of staff.

I discovered the fact that employers mainly want to be appreciated in their work when it comes down to it.
I wish the smaller job could learn from this.
Hold me back from telling them, or should i?

I agree. Most employers I have been worked for in the past have been totally crap, especially when you are at the bottom of the pile.

Cinnamon12345 · 30/11/2018 12:08

I work for a huge airline......

FunkyKingston · 30/11/2018 12:21

That's a very harsh sweeping generalisation

It has been reflected in having worked at the bottom of the pile in organisations where I'm towards the bottom of the pile and on short term or unsecure contracts.

It has been clear to me that the shittiness of the treatment you receive is in relation to how hard you are to replace.

masterandmargarita · 30/11/2018 12:23

Become a good employer!

Polarbearflavour · 30/11/2018 13:31

When you earn minimum wage in an unskilled job the employer feels no obligation to treat you well, they just have to comply with employment law.

The harder you are to replace and the more qualifications you have, the nicer they treat you.

Although I used to be an NHS nurse and despite the 3 year university degree course, nurses (and other qualified healthcare professionals) are often treated as disposable. Even though the NHS is short of thousands of staff! My local hospital is constantly recruiting band 5 nurses.

bakingdemon · 30/11/2018 13:34

@augustangst this is just what happened with my organisation. The boss was very good at his specific role but has no training or interest in managing people. Consequently we turn over 40% of our staff a year because they get fed up of being treated with no consideration at all.

SnuggyBuggy · 30/11/2018 13:41

It's definitely about how replaceable how you are

JoyofSticks · 30/11/2018 13:55

Because they only care about making money and see people as a resource.

Seniorcitizen1 · 30/11/2018 14:01

Of course there are crap employers - I have worked for a few myself - but in my experience (both as a colleague and now as an employer) there are far more crap employees who seek to do the bare minimum. UK productivity is piss poor - in part due to employer under investment, but also due to lazy and ineffectual employees. Two sides ti this

SnuggyBuggy · 30/11/2018 14:16

I suppose it's worth looking at why this is the case in the UK, I find it hard to believe that British people are inherently lazier than other people.

Sunhill4 · 30/11/2018 14:22

Because this country makes it too easy for people to live on benefits!!

HHLimboo · 30/11/2018 14:33

Actually I heard this country has the lowest unemployment benefits in Europe (compared to salaries).

SnuggyBuggy · 30/11/2018 14:34

Well surely if people wanted to live off benefits they wouldn't work at all rather than go to work and do a bad job

FunkyKingston · 30/11/2018 14:35

Because this country makes it too easy for people to live on benefits!!

Spoken by a person who has never tried to live on benefits. Live is a misnomer, you survive on benefits.

FunkyKingston · 30/11/2018 14:38

And what does the rate at which benefit is paid have to do with the question under discussion?

You reaponse is a completr nonsequitur, but hey why waste a chance to bash the poor and vulnerable eh?

HHLimboo · 30/11/2018 14:48

How do these crap people get so much money to become employers? I guess that's what it really comes down to.

Sunhill4 · 30/11/2018 14:50

My god some of you people are so rude - brave behind your keyboards!!

FunkyKingston · 30/11/2018 14:59

My god some of you people are so rude - brave behind your keyboards!!

What response do you expect when you put up ill informed, factually incorrect nonsense that has nothing to do with the question being discussed.

Don't worry, i am equally intolerant of intolerant Daily Mail type comments in real life too. Come round i will happily tell you the same to your face.

EvaReady · 30/11/2018 15:36

My god some of you people are so rude - brave behind your keyboards!! Who has been rude?

BogstandardBelle · 30/11/2018 15:45

In the case of small businesses / organisations, I think that people end up being managers who have no training or skills in it. Managing people, being fair and consistent as well as getting the job done - that takes skill and experience. DH works in a small educational charity. His boss, while an excellent educator and dedicated to the students, is a really rubbish manager, which affects all of them.

NameChanger22 · 30/11/2018 18:46

In my experience the people who become managers are the ones who can best display a nasty streak.

stopinthenameoflove · 30/11/2018 19:01

It is down to that they think they can replace people like that ( clicks fingers) of course I don't agree I think it's a shame that a lot of crap companies don't invest in there employees and I've always said a workforce that is happy is much more productive.

I could write a book on crap bosses I've worked for a huge company and a few little companies with terrible bosses rubbish MD amazing how they made a profit but if someone was off sick for a few days they would get fired and have someone else within a few days ( no experience no training) but they just thought if they can't do the job will get rid . It used to disgust me how they used people like that and I said so . I no longer work there Smile

GaryBaldbiscuit · 30/11/2018 19:08

I really would want to leave, minimum pay, zero hours contract, it is just a bit extra though, but I come to rely on it.

This is true , I've met many many lazy colleagues who want to do the bear minimum and think just turning up is enough. I'm not talking about those I'm talking about hard working people who want the company to do well and to do there job the best of there ability it would be nice if employers would encourage that .

Badbadbunny · 30/11/2018 19:15

All the small companies (well, tiny actually with no more than 20 staff) have been a million times better than the big employers I've been with. With the big employers you get the middle management levels which are usually dominated by incompetents who've been promoted beyond their level of ability and who are mostly playing the corporate "i'm more important than you" game. With small companies, you're usually working directly for the owner, so it's a much more "personal" experience. I've benefited massively from that in terms of very flexible working when required, healthy bonuses, more freedom in how to do the work, etc. My corporate experiences were pretty awful as it was always the middle management who took credit for improvements I made. Give me a small, owner managed, firm any day of the week.
