What is the best cake or dessert you have ever had?

I was recalling eating at Caffe Concerto over New Street station in Brum and their chocolate gateau slice was creamy loveliness.

Also can you send me a slice?

A lemon and poppy seed cake

CandleWithHair · 30/11/2018 19:28

Covent Garden general store in the mid 90s. They did a toffee apple muffin that had delicious squidgy chunks of apple and lots of crispy crunchy toffee on the top AND at the bottom of the muffin case. I rue the day M&S took over that site!

Not wanting to toot my own horn (BEEP BEEP!!!) but my own Christmas cakes. I use a cherry-heavy recipe and feed them copious amounts of brandy from October onwards. Come Christmas they are indescribably fruity, moist and boozy Grin

Tanaqui · 30/11/2018 19:35

There was a bakery chain- possibly the 3 cooks? That did an iced apple doughnut. It was gorgeous! And, since becoming gluten intolerant, m and s used to do a great gf frangipani but the bastards discontinued it!

Sarcelle · 30/11/2018 20:33

Candle - they rued the day too, it has closed. One of the M & S branches they have shut recently. I used to love that Covent Garden General Store, it really was an emporium. Never had a cake but used to buy some great clothes there as well as all the other bits and bobs.

My favourite cake has to be Black Forest gateau. Around this time of year I get a craving for cranberry and orange combinations.

BikeRunSki · 30/11/2018 21:29

I loved the Covent Garden General Store. The heavyweight carrier bags/shoulder bags were the bags to be seen with at my Central London school in the 1980s.

waves to the gluten intolerant folks @tanaqui @CantsitWontsit I just wanted to send you the tip that if you make the brownies below with rice flour, they taste divine! Better than with gluten flour or gluten-free mixes. Even gluten-eaters BEG me for the recipe.

This is the recipe that I use: www.bhg.com/recipe/chocolate/ultimate-brownies/

The best cake I ever had was a toblerone cheesecake in a cafe somewhere along the Great Ocean Road. Wish I could remember where, although this was around 15 years ago. I have had toblerone cheesecakes since but none of them have come close!

TaleOfTheContinents · 01/12/2018 00:08

Fridaydreamer Would you share the recipe? Sounds divine!

Bloodybridget · 01/12/2018 00:28

Of ones I've made, gooseberry streusel cake is probably my absolute favourite. Unfortunately I almost never see fresh gooseberries for sale, but it's also very good made with rhubarb.

Numerodos · 01/12/2018 07:19

Omg @hoomanmoomin can I please have the recipe? I definitely need to finally give it a go. Russian Honey Cake, that was it!

Boglin · 01/12/2018 07:33

I used to do a lot of baking and the apple streusel cupcakes were always a winner. Light, moist sponge, crunchy topping, yum! We're actually about to open a café so have been experimenting with tray bakes to sell and apple streusel is next on the list. Picking up some excellent new ideas from this thread too!

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 01/12/2018 08:59

I’d forgotten the Covent Garden General Store! Happy days...

The best cake in the world is Konditor & Cook’s lemon chiffon cake. When the Curzon Soho had a K&C concession as it’s cafe, my idea of heaven was a slice of lemon chiffon and an arty film.

Tanaqui · 01/12/2018 13:10

Thank you User! I am also a big fan of Nigella’s flourless brownies (ground almonds instead of flour).

Davros · 01/12/2018 13:32

We were saying only last night that goosegogs have died out and how much we love them

flugelhorn81 · 01/12/2018 13:38

Konditor & Cook curly wurly cake - it's dark chocolate with vanilla cream cheese icing and delicious! They also do an amazing fudge brownie.

But a PP has also reminded me about rum cake - I had a friend who lived in Barbados and used to bring it back for me, it's amazing.

Davros · 01/12/2018 13:41

I've got a Bermudan rum cake that someone gave me. I don't fancy it at all!

user1471449040 · 01/12/2018 22:29

you're welcome @tanaqui :) do you have any other nice GF bakes you recommend? ta x

BlueJava · 01/12/2018 22:33

My friend at work (in UK) had been home to NZ to see her mum or her birthday. Her mum made her a purple fondant cake and she brought it into work - it was amazing. Probably the best cake I've ever had a slice of!

Cuzcothellama · 02/12/2018 00:34

Nuss Kuss in Cafe Central in Vienna. Was moaning to DH about the queue, but it was totally worth it. Drool worthy.

OneStepMoreFun · 02/12/2018 00:39

Coffee and Walnt cake at Peyton %& Byrne in St Pancras Station years ago. It was so masisve I shared it with a friend, even though it;s my favourite flavour It wa smost and crumbly and packed with nuts, with real btter icing. Next time I tried one at Peyton & Byrne, a few years later, having dreamed of it for ages, it was small and stale and tasted of cardboard.

Beeziekn33ze · 02/12/2018 01:31

Mrs Mills' cakes at local markets and cafés. Her salted caramel brownies were the best. And a slice of her salted caramel gateau with chocolate was incredible. Regrettably she gave up cakemaking.

Beeziekn33ze · 02/12/2018 01:34

The Guinness Christmas Cake recipe is excellent.

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 02/12/2018 01:41

An apple pie in Ypres. So good I remember where I had it.

Cauliflowersqueeze · 02/12/2018 02:02

A fig and mascarpone ice cream I had in Spain about 5 years ago.

My eyes rolled into the back of my head and I was torn between eating it so slowly it would melt but last forever and eating it so fast that it would be gone in seconds but would be of perfect consistency. It was like a gorgeous dream.
