Would you take a bottle of champagne from a drinks gathering?

Free drinks hosted by an organisation I am member of. This is a very very very wealthy organisation, worth in excess of £500 million.

There were 50 people and 100 bottles of champagne.

As I was leaving I saw a crate of champagne and so nabbed a bottle. AIBU?

Yes, after your update I'd have just said as I wasn't drinking and there was lots left could I take one for later.

dontalltalkatonce · 28/11/2018 20:21

Um, no. CF.

ShesABelter · 28/11/2018 20:22

No, I really, really wouldn't. Thats embarrassing.

MyEyesAreNotDeceivingMe · 28/11/2018 20:22

I think I’d have only taken it if it was clearly expressed that any leftover bottles could be taken home.

I’d be concerned that it was on sale or return.

Grilledaubergines · 28/11/2018 20:23

Of course yabu!

It’s like a burglar justifying breaking into a big house because there are more expensive belongings.

Yabu we once used cctv to track down who had taken boxes of beer at the end of a bbq...so we could ask for the money from them.

Nofunkingworriesmate · 28/11/2018 20:25

If there was one each and I was driving I'd probably ask who ever was organising or in charge if they minded as I was driving
I'd me mortified if anyone saw me. As it is not stealing as such in my book just totally without class and a v studenty thing to do

unfortunateevents · 28/11/2018 20:27

Crass. And you changed your story part-way through. First you said it was free drinks, implying a social gathering, then you said the champagne was a gift. If the champagne was a gift, then it would have been given to you unopened, not poured into a glass while you all stood around chatting.

Cuzcothellama · 28/11/2018 20:28

No way. Sorry OP, this isn't cool.

Sparklingbrook · 28/11/2018 20:29

Of course not. Why would I?

cheesywotnots · 28/11/2018 20:30

Bit crass, I wouldn't in case someone saw me and thought I was just a sad twat.

Ca55andraMortmain · 28/11/2018 20:31

The champagne was provided as a gift from the organisation. There were no staff and people were invited to serve themselves as much as they'd like. The champagne was already paid for. Of course I would take a bottle. I bet more people would than are admitting it here too.

artemisdubois · 28/11/2018 20:35

I wouldn't, because I'd feel embarrassed/greedy/grabby if anybody saw me doing so. In these specific circumstances I don't think you taking a bottle was all that cheeky.

ALemonyPea · 28/11/2018 20:37

No, but I'd have asked if I could take one if I'd not been drinking it at the function.

donquixotedelamancha · 28/11/2018 20:38

YWBU. Should have been a crate.

Heartofglass21 · 28/11/2018 20:38

I wouldn't take a bottle of champagne. If it was a gift, then it would have been offered to people as they left. Nicking an unopened bottle is thieving.

outreach29 · 28/11/2018 20:40

FFS - you were not being unreasonable.

Under the circumstances described - it would be rude not to..

All those holier than thou people on this thread. Well done for being so bloody brilliant. And honest

Don't worry OP and enjoy your glass of bubbly.

ShatnersBassoon · 28/11/2018 20:42

No, I wouldn't grab stuff without being invited to. You were offered drinks at a social gathering; if you don't want it you don't get something to take home in lieu of that.

Sparklingbrook · 28/11/2018 20:44

Champagne is very overrated and doesn't actually taste very nice.

VerbeenaBeeks · 28/11/2018 20:46

No, I wouldn't. There's a word for that and it's not "nabbing" -cutesy names doesn't change the fact it's stealing.

MrsMiggel · 28/11/2018 20:50

If there were 50 people and only 100 bottles I’m surprised there were any left at the end of the night!

BeekyChitch · 28/11/2018 20:54

YANBU. It's there to be drunk - you will drink it. Hardly think they'll miss one bottle. No one is there counting how many were opened. I hope it was nice Gin

GirlFliesHome · 28/11/2018 20:54

It's theft.

Reminds me of friends we used to have who used todo that sort of thing. We'd go to cocktail arties and the husband would put a bottle inside his dinner jacket.

Theft.

Rainatnight · 28/11/2018 20:56

So rude and grabby.
