Would you take a bottle of champagne from a drinks gathering?

Free drinks hosted by an organisation I am member of. This is a very very very wealthy organisation, worth in excess of £500 million.

There were 50 people and 100 bottles of champagne.

As I was leaving I saw a crate of champagne and so nabbed a bottle. AIBU?

Point there is that staff are very easily accused of theft. And you left them open to those accusations.

highlighters1 · 28/11/2018 19:51

No there are no staff, the 100 bottles were a gift to the workers, and it was serve yourself.

No I wouldn't
It doesn't matter how much a company is worth , it's not yours to take , don't try and justify it
Is this a reverse ?

Blueemeraldagain · 28/11/2018 19:53

Charity or private function (like a wedding reception) no, anything else then yeah I probably would.

Thesnobbymiddleclassone · 28/11/2018 19:53

I'd have taken more than 1

ScreamingValenta · 28/11/2018 19:54

No, but only because I'd be worried about being seen and getting into trouble with my employer.

UmSayWhat · 28/11/2018 19:57

What difference does it really make if OP took a bottle or drank it there and then? What if someone was a designated driver and took a bottle to enjoy later? Honestly, I can’t see it as something to get so het up over.
OP says the bottles were gifts so it isn’t theft. Makes no difference when they were drunk.

Grace212 · 28/11/2018 20:00

I'd be worried about an inventory and catering staff getting the blame.

I actually was driving home, and so was able to only have a teeny wee sip

Grace212 · 28/11/2018 20:01

oh sorry, missed that there were no staff

in that case, I'm not sure.

LagunaBubbles · 28/11/2018 20:01

Of course it's not theft, they were gifts.

LagunaBubbles · 28/11/2018 20:02

trojan if you are going to be so judgemental at least read the post properly, she didn't take a crate, she took a bottle.

MissionItsPossible · 28/11/2018 20:07

I was going to say YABU but reading your update

No there are no staff, the 100 bottles were a gift to the workers, and it was serve yourself.

I would have done the same if I thought I could get away with it.

Blanchedupetitpois · 28/11/2018 20:08

I wouldn’t, but it’s hardly the crime of the century.

babysharkah · 28/11/2018 20:09

If I was pissed I probably would have done 😳

Katedotness1963 · 28/11/2018 20:10

No, I wouldn't take it.

speakout · 28/11/2018 20:11

No.

But only because Champagne makes me burp like a trucker.

bimbobaggins · 28/11/2018 20:12

I would and in the unlikely event of being questioned say you took it to have it at home because you were driving

puzzledlady · 28/11/2018 20:14

So you stole it?

Wonderful.

Evilspiritgin · 28/11/2018 20:14

I’m actually surprised there are so many people who admit to being thieves on mumsnet,

No I wouldn’t do it I’m not a thief

theworldistoosmall · 28/11/2018 20:15

Only when organisers have said to take a bottle at the end if there's any left.

QuestionableMouse · 28/11/2018 20:17

@trojanpony op took a single bottle, not a crate.

RibbonAurora · 28/11/2018 20:19

So if it was a gift and there was one there for every person there why did you ask if it was ok to take it and why do it in such an underhand way in that case?

Glowerglass · 28/11/2018 20:19

No, I wouldn't.
