To phone council re broken down car next door

His car broke down this morning on the pavement outside our house completely blocking the pavement forcing people to go on the road around it.. Basically blocking my view of the road as I pull out of my drive. We live on a main road and he’s just left it there with a sign saying broken. It’s a big people carrier.

I’ve no idea what to do and maybe I’m a bit thick about it as I’m on my own and have no idea what happens if your car breaks down on the pavement on your way off the drive.
Aibu to ask him what he’s planning to do with it as I’m actually thinking he’s planning on leaving it there for as long as he can get away with it. Or should I give him more time. He’s definitely just left it there and then gone to work another way. FWIW I don’t think he even speaks English from the brief conversations I’ve had with him so he might not even understand me!

Give him a minute to sort it out
He only broke down this morning!

empmalswa · 28/11/2018 16:16

Who is he?

I think as it only happened today it's hardly abandoned, not sure what the council will do?

AnnieOH1 · 28/11/2018 16:19

I would assume he will be arranging for it to be collected, perhaps will sort something after work tonight to tow it home? I really think you're jumping the gun and I imagine there must be a massive back story here for you to be reacting so quickly.

fanfan18 · 28/11/2018 16:19

He should try and get some neighbour to help him push the car out of the way and back on to his drive whilst he arranges repairs.

Innocentconglomeration · 28/11/2018 16:22

So he lives there, and it's broken down as he was driving off his own drive on to the road? So it's half on the footpath and half on the driveway?

Leave it just now = he's presumably at work and hopefully tonight will push it back up the drive or else get a mechanic / tow truck to come and sort it.

hellsbellsmelons · 28/11/2018 16:22

Look up the reg number on here for insurance and then here for MOT - If all is legal then I would allow a couple of days for it to be removed. As it's blocking the whole pavement though, you should tell him it needs to move and quickly.

If it's a main road, imagine all those people with pushchairs on in wheelchairs - it's bloody dangerous.

SpottingTheZebras · 28/11/2018 16:24

I’m actually thinking he’s planning on leaving it there for as long as he can get away with it.

It broke down this morning! I doubt it had been there more than eight hours when you posted. How about offering to help him move it once he is home?

hulahoopar · 28/11/2018 16:36

Thanks how would I be able to help him? He doesn’t speak English at all so I just say morning if I see him so don’t know him well.

Ok thanks for the replies I will leave it and see. It’s my crap driving as well because it’s bad enough without someone blocking my view.

@hellsbellsmelons it is dangerous and a million school kids went past earlier straight round it into main road so had a lovely load of horns blaring as well.

OP posts:
hulahoopar · 28/11/2018 16:38

Oh it’s been there since 7am but it’s still only a day

OP posts:
empmalswa · 28/11/2018 16:43

Thanks how would I be able to help him?

Why do you think you need to? Seriously; car broke down today. Give the boy a break.

Nicknacky · 28/11/2018 16:45

God, give him a chance! What do you think the council are going to do about it?

TimeToRevolutionize · 28/11/2018 16:46

Bloody hell lol talk about impatient! Grin

hulahoopar · 28/11/2018 16:48

Haha yes I’m impatient but I’m listening I won’t bother him.

Parking on the pavement was a parking infringement where I grew up (very suburban do people would often park on the drive over the verge/pavement rather than on their property. But the most they would do was fine you which isn’t all that useful in this situation.

hulahoopar · 28/11/2018 16:55

Oh he’s home as well so how many days do I leave it. Still impatient

OP posts:
Nicknacky · 28/11/2018 16:58

Just see what happens!

empmalswa · 28/11/2018 16:58

Oh he’s home as well so how many days do I leave it.

Why don't you have a think about why the car hasn't been moved yet?

Perhaps he has arranged garage collection for tomorrow or another day. Perhaps he hasn't money for a tow truck. Perhaps his family can help but not today?

Are you always ridiculously impatient and bothered about things?

hulahoopar · 28/11/2018 17:00

@empmalswa yes Grin

OP posts:
hellsbellsmelons · 29/11/2018 08:28

If he has breakdown cover then they come out that same day.
So I'd say, if it's not moved this morning, I'd be having words.

hulahoopar · 29/11/2018 10:11

@hellsbellsmelons yep it’s still there and pretty sure he’s in. I honestly think it’s a bit weird to just leave your massive car across a pavement on a main road. You can’t just get to the car and cross the road as the roads too busy and I’ve seen prams and dc have to try to get round it by crossing. It’s also blocking the view of the road to cross.
Think I’ll have to pop round later this afternoon.

The fact that it's broken down doesn't make it less weird?

Alfie190 · 29/11/2018 10:17

If my car broke down inconveniencing others, I would attend to it straight away. I think it is ridiculous that he left it there all day, it should be possible to get somebody out within a couple of hours.

NicePieceOfPlaid · 29/11/2018 10:19

Leave him alone FFS. Give him a couple of days to get it sorted. You sound like a nightmare neighbour, stop it.
